The decline of the Peep Show DVD extras is quite telling at the decline of DVD's as a whole [due to online streaming]. Series 4 is the last one with commentaries, 5-6 have some behind the scenes stuff and new material. 7 has no extras at all, 8+9 only has one or two deleted scenes and a couple of minutes of outtakes.
it genuinely makes me sad, i’ve always loved BTS stuff, deleted scenes and director/cast commentaries, they’re really interesting. some studios still do it (i recently picked up saw X which has multiple hours of extras!) but they're in the minority these days :(
Given Jez confesses to Mark about sleeping with another man (in his own room, naturally), I don't think Jez was entirely out of the closet in the earlier seasons. So I see him completely involuntary bringing up the possibility of him doing it as foreshadowing to his eventual bisexuality rather than a contradiction with it.
I don't know if you listen to Podcast Secrets of the Pharaohs, but in either Sam Bain's or David Mitchell's interview episodes they go into a lot more detail about the original concept for the show.
DVD Extras are becoming something of a lost art thanks to streaming, but I'll always remember finding stuff like Bill Bailey's Tea, Coffee and Trouser Press census on his Part Troll Tour DVD, or the Spaced and League of Gentlemen DVD's having extensive character biographies that reveal information never seen in the actual shows, or even the entirety of the Garth Marenghi's Darkplace DVD, including all episode commentaries, being entirely in-universe and in-character. You're preserving history, Andrew, niche British Comedy history from the 2000's to early 2010's, but still a noble goal.
They did a 'Alan Partridge and Lynne' in character commentary for 'I'm Alan Partridge' series 1 and Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights' had some great commentaries on them.
I believe the first seeries of I'm Alan Partridge also took a jab at Andy McNab. 'I can read you like a book, Lynne. And not a very good one. Not like Bravo Two Zero by Andy McNab, which actyually gets better upon every read.' (Done from memory, not sure if it's the exact quote.
The DVD says these elements were directed by Tristam Shapeero rather than series 1's director Jeremy Wooding. As Shapeero directed series 2-3 I guess this was filmed at the same time as series 2. Similar to the Bonus in series 3 where Johnston mentions Gerard [in the section where the clip from 0:22 comes from] who was only introduced in series 4.
Jez's move at 13:33 is incredible, although after watching it again it really looks like he starts spinning to his left, goes round then somehow changes direction and comes back round in his left side again. Very weird.
Andrew, you could do a cool video about Sophie's character arc (or "inconsistent characterization" depending on your opinion) from sweet office girl to whatever she is at the end of Series 9. Or about Olivia Colman's relationship in general to Mitchell and Webb.
I remember reading that Olivia Colman said that she found Sophie really unlikable. Most actors would have asked the writers to make her more likable..Colman said to make her more evil!
I also remember reading that Colman's agent said she was working too often with M&W and she was looking like 'the girl' in the M&W group and she should withdraw from the side projects. She reluctantly agreed [she described it as a 'decision made with tears'] but remained good friends with them-she only missed series 8 of peep show due to filming clashing with Broadchurch and made an effort to clear her schedule to appear in the series 9 episodes.
@@hannahsmith68 I had thought about doing videos on individual characters in the future, and Sophie would definitely be one of those characters. Thanks for the suggestion
It would kinda make sense that Super Hans would be the cameramen in the Outrageous music video. As for Mark, he was either drunk or he wanted to have fun in Jez’s project.
17:55 With the exception of series 3 [with the 'ing' at the end of every episode] peep show episode titles do seem arbitrary and added later. 7 start with Jeremy [including 3 in a row in series 5]. Instead of being called 'Project Zeus', that episode is called the very bland 'Conference'. A similar thing occurred with 'The Office' where each episode was just called 'episode 1' etc on the DVD but got very bland titles for the Netflix release etc. [such as 'Charity', 'New Girl' etc.].
I recently found out the same thing happened to 'Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights' as did the office, un-named episodes were retrospectively given bland titles for streaming services [Series 2 episode 1 is now called 'Brian Gets Everyone Back Together' which is really lame].
@@stevencross8877 It's two different people. Barney, the boy who sucked superhans off, is Sophies cousin. The boy at the wedding was her brother, can't remember his name.
@@gordonm6108 I know they're 2 different people What I'm saying is Jamie was at the wedding Barney was not So why does barney ask Jeremy if he remembers smoking with him at the wedding
Agree that they are lifeless compared to even minor characters [like Daryl say] in the earlier episodes despite have good actors [like Mathew Baynton from the wrong mans] playing them. I have similar feelings for Robert Grayson-given he's the successor to Johnston as Mark's boss he's such a nothing character. I keep imagining the paintball episode being made in the classic era [say with Jeff and Sophie] and It would be so much better.
Late to the party - but I think the name of Outrageous is likely a reference to how Aphex Twin names his songs, which often are a bunch of seemingly nonsensical words and numbers and decimal points all thrown together.
15:17 I see stuff like that all the time and no matter how many times it's debunked it's still put up as a fact. One I remember is that Kenneth MacDonald who played Mike in Only Fools and Horses died [at the too early age of 50] he requested in his will his character shouldn't be killed off...what! [In reality it was out of sensitivity to his family]. It makes no sense at all but I've seen it listed as fact on a lot of websites.
Weird to see all the comments saying you shouldnt talk during the video. Like, there's millions of videos of people talking about media and I've never seen anyone saying that in the comments, but here we have like 6 or 7 comments all saying you should shut up and just play the content. What's with that? Maybe just old people who don't know what a video essay is? Also I'm pretty sure that celsius 488 1/3 is a reference to Fahrenheit 911.
I noticed a funny mistake in series 1 episode 2. When Mark is at work Jeremy goes into Mark’s room looking for you know what and on Mark’s bedside table there is Stalingrad the book. In the next scene with Mark in the office with Sophie’s doodle there is also Stalingrad next to hist computer
Bit of an old one now and not sure if anyone has already mentioned it, but I think “488 1/3” might be a reference to the title of the comedy film “The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult”. It’s a pretty funny idea that Jez might have combined a work as dark and dystopian as Fareinheit 451 with an intentionally cheesy, slapstick parody action film.
Good work mate, always nice to see more peeps. Have you noticed Jeremys chair fetish? Keep your eyes peeled, there are a surprising number of references to it.
Superb! I love the format of this new series and your as-ever insightful analysis. Bravo, Mr. Andrew. Looking forward to the rest of these videos - not least because I don't own any Peep Show DVDs, so all this is new to me.
Sophie was gorgeous in 1st and 2nd series then she got more hippy and angry and I kinda lost interest in the character as she seemed pretty horrible lol.
Apparently Olivia Colman really disliked the character. Now most actors would ask them to make the character more sympathetic, instead Colman asked for them to make her more horrible!
What do you think of the Peepshow Comedy Gala short? I don't remember much from it other than that they used an alternative opening theme tune that seemingly doesn't exist
The first page of the BSotP book shows that Mark indeed has a BA in Business Studies, which contradicts the idea that he has an MA when he makes the 'MA, MBA' joke in S8E4. (Although he says of course that he spent 'three years' at Dartmouth complaining to Jez daily, which would give him only a BA, but that's all ancient history now) The second page also mentions Roman Abramovich, who took over Chelsea in mid-2003 only a couple months before the release of S1 and supposedly after the events took place. However I don't believe that Mark would actually have this level of football knowledge (same for the Thierry Henry bit) considering his ignorance about the 'red team' of the Liverpool and England captain nine years later.
Mark probably takes his football half-knowledge only from the news, so he might get a few things right and others wrong. There was also the "White Hart ground" and, my favourite, asking about "the big fixture" while trying to play five-a-side with Simon's mates.
Seriously, I couldn't be any less interested in football than I already am. I know absolutely nothing about it in the grand scheme, I quite literally couldn't name 5 current footballers if my life depended on it. Yet, despite that, even I know of these same things as Mark. Sometimes it's simply impossible to have avoided such bits of information or names, being constantly bombarded with it outside of the football sphere. Like I have never spent a solitary second of my life watching the Twilight series, yet I can now reference it and I think even correctly tell you the name of the lead female's character.
@@IAmPez Bit like I know who the 'hot priest' is even though I've never watched Fleabag as it was all over the media at the time. You also get footballers who are general celebrities [everyone knows who David Beckham is and Mark knowing Thierry Henry works as he was in adverts and general pop culture stuff at the time].
Not entirely what you asked for but you might be interested in watching his video "Peep Show Mysteries: Michelle " because it's kinda related to what happened to Toni
Go and watch the extras then, as I recommend to do multiple times in the video. I honestly do not get comments like this. I literally spell it out for you that the extras are all available in their original forms on RU-vid, yet you STILL comment this stuff. Blows my mind.
You mean like just flat-out ripping and uploading the DVD's content for you to watch? Sounds reasonable, I mean there is clearly no other way you could ever possibly see the content in the way you desire.
