We are asked to get the video files on the hard disk of a Sony model RDR-HXD995 DVD/HDD recorder, which is apparently similar to a Pioneer. We use Isobuster software for this job, with some extra help from Windows and Freemake Video Converter.

Nice Video, thanks. Hint (lesser known feature). If you have to resort to "Find missing files and folders" (aka data carving) because your recorder's unique file system is not (yet) supported (as is the case with IB 3.6, mentioned in the video), typically there will be false positives as well. Meaning, besides VOB files that contain the MPEG2, there might also be jpg, mp2 etc. files found. Latter files are usually false positives and should be ignored. Worse, they may cut previously found VOB shorter than it really is. If you're in this situation you may want to let IsoBuster know this is a Video Recorder HDD by pressing Ctrl + Shift while right mouse clicking the (top most) HDD icon in the left pane. You will see extra options such as "Find missing files and folders [Video \*.VOB]". Latter data carving function will focus solely on Video and will be less fooled by data that *looks* like something it's not.

I've got a few of those Sony recorders. They're rebadged Pioneer models. They have excellent comb filters in them, that make composite video look almost as good as S-Video. If you dub from HDD to DVD in "High Speed" mode there is no quality loss - it's a direct digital copy from the HDD to the DVD.

Sounds like they are quite similar to JVC models, which also have high speed dubbing without quality loss. Provided of course, that the resulting file will actually fit a DVD.

Unfortunately, it was not defined here whether the "excellent comb filter" only applies to stable television signals or also to jittering video recorders, since a comb filter requires exactly 64 µseconds (PAL) line spacing. I already had a comb filter where only the very few "64 µsecond lines" were sharp, and all others were unsharp, as with the low-pass Filter setting (S-VHS Tape via Cinch).

I think it's the other way around, the Pioneer model is a rebadged Sony. I have a very similar model, maybe this exact one, and the DVD drive and main chips are all Sony in it.

@@mrnmrn1 You may well be right, but everything I have read on the matter says the opposite. When I bought my original HXD890 new, years ago, I did so in the full knowledge that it was a Pioneer in drag, but the equivalent Pioneer model was more expensive so it was a no-brainer to pick the Sony.

THANK YOU! This may be hugely helpful to me whenever I get around to tackling it... I have a Sony RDR-HX900 (HDD/DVD-RW+RW) that developed a fault (I forget what fault, it was over a decade ago), a Sony RDR-HX715 (slightly newer HDD/DVD-RW+RW) and Panasonic DMR-EH50 (HDD/DVD-RW/RAM)... AND, most challenging of all, a bit-for-bit cloned HDD of a failed cable DVR, all with recordings I want to save. You may have just saved me a lot of time with 2 of the 3 HDD/DVD recorders, and on the other HDD/DVD recorder and the cloned cable DVR HDD, given hope to make the impossible, possible.

If you only want to have smaller amounts of MP4 files and don't have IsoBuster, you can also capture the uncompressed HDMI signal. For mass processing, IsoBuster is of course easier.

@@TTVEaGMXde My machine is a DMR-EX97EB-K. One day it just failed, annoying as I didn’t use it much. Its now in the loft, I think the issue was it wouldn’t boot. Interesting what you said regarding encryption!

The old DVD/HDD recorders are quite usable even if they are so old that they no longer have DVB-T2 MPEG 4 or DVB-T MPEG 2 encoding of the TV signal. when buying used, it is best to stick to well-known brands such as Philips, Sony, Panasonic and several others. They can have a super good TBC built in, which you can use by running the video signal through from an older video machine without a TBC. I do it myself with a 1" Sony C-format where I insert video through a DVD Recorder from Philips. It stabilizes the signal well, also the colors.

I found Thomson's first DVD recorder from 2002, the DTH8000 to work incredibly well for this task. Makes shaky VHS tapes rock solid. It takes the signal 3-4 seconds to get from its input to the output, so it does a lot of processing. If there's a full loss of sync due to tape damage, sometimes it glitches and locks the vertical blanking in the middle of the screen and/or the picture turns all purple, so it can not be left alone during archiving, it needs supervision. I had the first HW revision, which died. Now I have the second HW revision with a completely different chipset, the MPEG codec in it is theoretically enhanced but not sure about the TBC, because I haven't tried it yet. I'm not really interested in its MPEG-2 capabilities, as I use it only as a feed-through TBC.

@@video99couk I have a JVC DR-MH10 that still works. I did a test against it and several other recorders and found with the later Panasonic DMR-EZ48 in HQ mode it did a pretty good job with the video.

What is the name of the PHILIPS "TBC"? The PHILIPS schematics I've seen so far tend to have very different chipsets. I'm trying Pioneer DVR-560H, but have to get some bad tapes first.

I have a Sony Recorder like that one In silver. The only thing that has gone on It, was the Sata Cable (Red One) even though this Is never moved, It does Deteriorate over time. Just replace It, and Your back In action. I also did the old Docking station method once. When the Stat Cable failed. But I used Magix Movie Maker, then converted Into MP4. Glad It worked for You.

Wow, you are a brave man! At least you’ve managed to show that it can be done with some machines using the software that you have. I have a Panasonic DMR-EX95VEBS machine and I’d love to do the same thing, but I think I’m reduced to the HDD to DVD route (recording each in real time - I daren’t even now switch on ‘High Speed Mode’ to create the DVDs). The reason for me taking this route this is that I understand that once you take the drive out of the machine and try to use it in a caddy, when you put it back in the machine, it no longer recognises it. It only give you the option to format it - all recordings no longer there/recognisable/accessible. I’ve also heard that you can’t even swap a disk from one DMR-EX95VEBS to another DMR-EX95VEBS machine (which you might want to do in the event of hardware failure say) as again it doesn’t recognise it and forces a format. It’s almost as if it somehow pairs the hardware to whatever it reads from the HDD on first boot-up. I don’t know what that would be. From that point on you are stuck with that HDD/machine pairing. So given all that concern (assuming that it’s true), it might be very dangerous for me to even try the HDD in a caddy, and that’s even if I’m not going to write to it - just read. Perhaps it all goes wrong when people try to mount it in Windows instead of using something like IsoBuster? Who knows. At least it worked with that Sony machine. I did find myself cringing in anticipation of a total loss though Colin. I was mightily relieved, that’s for sure. Well done that man!

My experience with Panasonic HDD recorders: DMR-E80H, DMR-E100H, DMR-E85H, DMR-E95H, DMR-E96H, DMR-E500H, DMR-EH50, DMR-EH60, DMR-EH55, DMR-EH56, DMR-EH57, DMR-EH75V, DMR-EH75, DMR-EX75, DMR-EH58, DMR-EH68, DMR-EH59, DMR-EH69, DMR-BS750, DMR-BS850, DMR-BS780, DMR-BS880, DMR-BS785, DMR-BS885, DMR-EX77, DMR-EX87, DMR-BW500, DMR-BWT835 and DMR-BWT730 is that all of them could perfectly be removed, Video could be extracted with IsoBuster, and the recorder was happy to work with the HDD afterwards. No issues. It's when you write to the drive that problems can occur, otherwise, provided the device is not powered up while you remove the HDD or while the HDD hasn't been put back yet, the recorder is clueless to the fact that the drive was removed to start with.

That's encouraging. Fingers crossed that the same if true for the DMR-EX95VEBS. I guess it's still true that you can't swap HDDs from one DMR-EX95VEBS to another identical machine. At least that's what I've heard.@@PeterVanHove

@@BongbongA99 you can swap the hard drive from an identical machine to another, but it forces you to format the hard drive. I have the Panasonic DMR-EX95V, and I cloned the original loud Samsung hard drive to a Western Digital 250 GB IDE hard drive. The recorder does not give an HDDERR message and boots from the new hard drive. I just needed to format the hard drive, and now my recorder is still working fine. But you must clone the original hard drive because there is a small amount of code inside the hard drive that needs to be on the new hard drive to be accepted by the recorder. If you put a completely blank HD without cloning, you will get the HDDERR message.

Thanks for this. I have the same model. I seem to think I tried doing this a few years ago to no avail. This will be a convenient way to capture video from old consoles I've never captured DVB on it. With the files having different programs and resolutions, I wonder if it just dumped the transport stream for that channel and had multiple channels in it There used to be a java program called project x that I used for extracting transport streams years ago so might be worth a look. I seem to remember there is a tool called tsremux (demux?) that could dump the individual streams for you to mux to another container like mp4 or mkv with the appropriate software (mp4box/mkvtoolnix or maybe ffmpeg)

We have a similar recorder a “Sony DVD Recorder RDR-HDC100”. It has an error on the hard drive and will not read the drive. We have a remote control caddy which has been known to hold buttons down, sending devices berserk, if the remote is carelessly placed. I wondered if the remote for recorder was placed in the caddy, buttons accidentally pressed and the hard drive left inoperable as a result. Do you know the infra red combination for formatting the hard drive so I can get the recorder operable again? Thanks, Stephen.

mine was done in because the dvd drive a bearing must have gone bad so i can't burn the contents to dvd however playing dvds is fine (and the whole recorder works fine). i nearly got a replacement deck cheaply but it got sold.

I've got a sony drd-hxd870 the best thing I've found is that in system setting there is input line system you can recorded in Ntsc or Pal/Secam very useful when recording from a usa ntsc playstation 2 console with playstation 1 game as they are in 240 interlace as I've had trouble recording in the past. The model you have is drd hxr995 has the same input line system as my one hope this is any use to you or anyone wanting a dvd sony recorder that can recorded to dvd or hhd in Ntsc or Pal/Secam

I have a Panasonic DMR-ES15 DVD recorder, which has a kind of line TBC on input. I also have a Leitch X75 and a Canopus ADVC700. What routine would you recommend for capturing Video 8 tapes? I also have a Balckmagic Intensity Shuttle board and a Pinnacle 710. I'm in Brazil, but the material is all in NTSC. Is DV in this case worth it?

There are a lot of variables here. The Intensity Shuttle should give very good results, but if that is too hard to use then use the Canopus ADVC700. The Panasonic can be used as a basic E-E TBC, so that's useful. Many later Sony camcorders also include a TBC so one of those might be even better. If you use a Hi8 player then use the better S-Video connector rather than Composite Video.

Correct, as well as extracting data from DVDs, Isobuster can extract video files from a HDD/DVD recorder's hard disk.

sir, I have Sony Handycam DCR HC48 which works perfectly fine with the power adapter on. But if I take it out and put it on battery power, it cant turning ON, when i charged indicator lamp is flashing, what’s wrong?

Usually this is just a bad battery. You could connect a meter and a small load (like a 6V bulb) to the battery to check that it's holding charge.

Sky and Virgin Media boxes allow for recording from their services, and many modern TVs have a USB port so can record to that.

@@video99couk Archiving is becoming more difficult with the gradual ending of DVD recorders being made; an SSD or hard drive is only so big (and they don't seem to be getting any more capacious beyond 2TB). On what can we store our archive copies of TV series and films? Our houses used to have shelves filled with tapes and discs. Most people rely on streaming and have no means to locally record or store.

I've got a similar machine (Sony RDR-HXD890 - 160GB HDD) but it's developed this fault where it won't store new DVB channels. It lets me re-tune but once put into standby it forgets and goes back to the previous tuned stations, and because I'm on a different transmitter now I just get No Signal. I've read online that I need to be on a certain version of firmware as there was a fault where tuning info was lost, but this machine seems to be on that newer version. Is it possible to re-install the firmware or will it see it's already on updated and not do anything? My plan is to get either a DVD+RW or DVD-RW and high speed dub the contents from the HDD, rip the DVD and then use the DVD again until everything is copied.

You can only try with the firmware update. Whether it allows it or not is an unknown.

Sony being the a$$holes that they are, they do their best to make firmwares unaccessible for older models. If you look up your model on their website, and it is no longer supported, forget to get a firmware update for it. If you can't find it on your model's support page, it's gone. And they sue the living piss out of any third party who makes their firmwares available, so no real chance finding it online anywhere. Only chance in these cases is to get a new, still working motherboard, desolder the flash chip, and copy it. If it was successful, erase and re-write the flash on the donor motherboard as well, to refresh the charge in the cells. They can become corrupted well before 10 years. Or try to get the firmware updated in a Sony Service center, but it will be pricy, if they undertake the job at all (they probably won't).

@@mrnmrn1 you are speaking from my heart, that's exactly what I am doing on my private devices. I desolder the flash chip and read out the firmware, saving it as a .BIN file. It's an identical copy of the firmware written in the factory during manufacturing. Oh, and don't forget about the data retention time of the flash chip. Let's say the data retention is 10 years; if the chip is losing its contents, the device becomes inoperative. What I do is read out the chip, erase, and write the data back to the flash ROM. So, you gain +10 years more retention time because the data is newly and freshly written.

@@mrnmrn1 most devices use TSOP48 (Thin-Small-Outline-Package) flash I use Xgecu Tl866ii Plus Programmer with TSOP48 adapter to read out the firmware.

@@mrnmrn1 If we read out the firmware, we can show our middle finger to the manufacturers because hardware is easy to repair. But, as you said, the firmware is the most difficult part or impossible to find. I have a lot of devices built before 2005, and I have all the firmware for the devices I own. My goal is to keep them functioning and save the environment.

Can this method be used for Toshiba VHS/HDD/DVD multi? So instead of going through the dvd to get the digitalized vhs, I can access the vhs tape directly from the hdd.

Perhaps your LG is really a Pioneer with a different bezel or something like that. It's a long shot, but worth a try, since it's broken anyway. Build out the HDD and let IsoBuster have a look at it in free mode. If it lists the recordings it's actually a supported drive.

I'm not familiar with sony dvd hdd recorders but Sony (and other brands) just use some embedded Linux distro or something similar to reduce cost. If file system on HDD is something like ext2/3/4 it could be extracted for free with tiniest distro on usb stick. Maybe.

Yes I would expect the HDD to be Linux formatted, but then the files themselves would be VOB etc.

I was thinking the same, good catch. The isobuster web site mentions using their software with Wine, so guessing PlayOn should work as well .. I suspect ffmpeg might also extract/convert mp2/mp4 files ..

I have yet to come across a Video Recorder that uses something Linux inside ! I have come across FAT and UDF, but not EXT or anything like that. Most use their own file systems, totally unique and unsupported in any OS.

So when you put the HDD back into the recorder, were there any problems in accessing the contents of the hard-drive or was the HDD corrupted due to your isobuster actions? I have the exact same model and have a lot of precious recordings on it, but because most have been recorded at maximum quality, doing the DVD-rip method would mean, that not only would I have to do transfers to DVD in real time, but I'd also have to settle for a slightly lesser quality due to the "re-encoding" process.

All working fine when reassembled. I suppose you could dub losslessly by splitting the original recordings down into chunks that would fit a DVD, but that would be hugely time consuming.

@@video99couk Exactly - it would be more hassle, than I'd have the time or energy to do. Besides, I've ONCE tried splitting a recording to fit to DVD-RW discs, but when re-assembling the two split recording into one, there was a kind of small jitter at the split point. So no thx, not going down that route again.

@@pHD77 Since I-frames (full image content) only exist once, you cannot split the Video, since both segments require the I-frame and one has to be removed when merging.

Hi i have transferred some VHS video's to DVD using a DVD Recorder they look fuzzy or blocky when viewed on a 55" HD TV, is VHS not supposed to look good or clear on a big TV, Please advise.

VHS is a low quality format and then DVD compression makes it even worse. Make sure you set the DVD recorder to the highest bit rate possible, so 1 hour per DVD. That should help a bit. If you are squeezing 2 hours or more onto a single layer DVD then it will look rough.

@@video99couk Hi i have now captured using a Hauppauge Colossus PCIe HD video capture card and the results are amazing, the video is clear from blocks or artifacts, the quality is superb, i have now flogged my DVD Recorders on eBay as they do a terrible job of transferring VHS recordings, you lose quality and the quality is poor or inferior not clean or identical to original recording.

I just don't get it why it is so hard to implement an function to export the recordings to an external drive. The only way to export it to dvd is ... garbage. And it seems, that all HDD recorder from this time has this issue.

Possibly, using the same software and techniques as used in this RU-vid video. But it carries a risk. Some or all of the data on the hard disk could be lost, or even the unit made unusable.

I suspect that the Sony cannot format that. Certainly some other HDD recorders have bespoke firmware on the hard disks.

Hello! Nice video. Thanx! Just a question. I hade a Sony old DVD HDD recorder (rdr-hx520) which displays HDD error on the front panel. I recovered .vob files using your method but all files doesn't want to play (black or green screen). Is that mean that the files are encrypted or something else? The disk seems to be okay, SMART read OK, but maybe someone was doing a format and corrputed the filesystem and the files? I have no idea, so I ask you, that maybe you experienced such a behaviour?

VOB files are not exactly MPEG2 files, though they may be playable. Try VLC Player.

@@video99couk The files are encrypted. I confirmed that. They aren't playable. Sony used their own key to encrypt the files stored on HDD (they must be decoded on fly). The header of the file is okay, but the datas are encrypted. So I am not able to watch the files...

@@video99couk I've managed to run service mode of sony rdr-hx520 and scanned the ID of the disk and disk itself, no errors. Next I booted the device and it booted without hdd error but it doesn't show any files on hdd. I know that they are on the disk... So I am stuck in a loop of what to do.

@@user-ur6iv6yu4q Normally, it's not a secret. I found pdf manual in Internet. As far as I remember, you have to press and hold eject button + play button while plugging the power cable.

@@video99couk Yeah, i have a totally legal 100% not pirated version of IsoBuster im planning to use. Also the hdd on my philips dvdr3455h is going bad. Since to replace the hdd you need the firmware disc and the files have been deleted off Philips' website, do you know if i can clone the dying hardrive to a new hard drive so that the new one has the firmware and starts up?

Cost depends a bit on complexity but I'm quoting about £50 - £75 to extract the data from a disk which is in a DVD recorder. There's a risk though, that it could all be lost.

in a place where my mate helps out they get handed in all the time the tv recorders as alot of older people pass away beware the drive's do go bad as you are trying to get the files of i had this with the old virgin boxes they don't make them with old kind discs drives are more i was told

I wonder if there's a hack to make the DV input (Firewire, I presume) into a DV input/output. My DCR-PC7E camcorder from 1998 had a hack that you could do with the Sony RM95(?) service remote control (or an emulator which I used) to enable Firewire video output. Then again... The DCR-PC7E was just a European version of an internationally marketed DV camera, whereas the backside of that recorder looks VERY European-centered, so it may have been built only for the European market, and the DV-out hardware may just not be there.

The reason camcorders used to have DV-in disabled (not out) was to stop it being classed as a video recorder which had a higher taxation class than a camcorder / camera. I'm sure in this case that DV-out was physically impossible because there would not have been any MPEG2 to DV decoder hardware.

I think I have the same Sony recorder, or a very similar one. I bought it broken (boot looping), but managed to get into its service menu, and done a factory reset on it. It worked perfectly afterwards. For a whole day... Next time I switched it on, it was boot looping again, and I can no longer enter into service mode. Judging by how it died, I'm pretty confident it's a corrupted firmware issue. I wanted to do a firmware update on it while it was working, but unfortunately Sony being themselves, wiped the firmware from the whole internet. They never let third party sites to have their firmwares. Might try to contact a Sony service center, they might give it to me for some cash, if they are as corrupt as my firmware 🙂. That's the problem with modern electronics, they won't ever become real vintage in working condition, because the flash memories that contain the firmware have very finite and unpredictable data retention times. Mine was about 8-10 years old when it failed. And it was barely used as a recorder, because I saw the hours counter in the service menu. It was used for burning DVDs for less than 10 hours... The previous owner used it mostly as a DVD player, it had IIRC 8.000 hours of DVD playback time in it. Since I bought an other, newer model, I intend to use it for converting analog video into HDMI, and record it with a PC with a USB3.0 HDMI recorder. It's basic TBC works OK, but for really damaged, jumpy VCR footages, I found and old Thomson DVD-recorder (their first model, DTH8000) that works excellent for stabilizing the image of VCR footage. It really chews the signal well, as it takes about 3-4 seconds for the input signal to get to the output. And it does that on-the-fly as well, doesn't need to record it onto DVD. A professional TBC is outside of my budget range, so that's the best I can get. I don't do archiving as a job, I just buy bulk used VHS tapes and archive old TV shows and ads for myself. Maybe some day, I will start to upload them to YT.

I have had some limited success using the wayback machine to search for old firmware, however its not perfect and most links to files will not be saved. I was able to repair a Pioneer machine by changing the hard disk and using a custom remote like a one4all. Its always been a hobby of mine trying to get faulty or broken things back working.

@@user-ur6iv6yu4q It was about two years ago, so I don't remember exactly, but it was easy. I think the power or eject (or both, or whatever) button(s) needs to be held depressed while you are plugging in the device to mains. I think I found the method in the service manual.

4:30 it may be good at this point to clone the Hard Drive, so you're working off a copy and not the master, as it were. Not just good for your nerves, but good generally on a drive that may have worked a very hard life.

Yes, but the device is then deinterlacing the video and upscaling it, plus you'd have to re-encode the video. Getting the source files provides a better quality. You can do your own better decoding using something like FFMPEG to deinterlace to full 50fps.

Very interesting video, I had not heard of isobuster. I had a Pioneer bluray HDD recorder fail with material I wanted still on it. The hard disc was formatted in Ext4 and readable but the problem was that the HD recordings from the TV were encrypted with the encryption tied to the dead machine. I could only recover the SD recordings.

---I tried to do the same with my old Panasonic DVDR/Tuner (DMR-EX75) that cruelly utilised a hidden microswitch under the top cover to randomly trigger a FAT reset the next time the HDD was reinserted. Obviously this was to prevent people sharing HDDs full of copyright programmes. Luckily I had already taken an ISO image of the drive so could use HexEdit software to overwrite it with the original FAT sectors content. Did you see any such trickery with Sony?--- ---When pulling off the MPGs I was annoyed to find none of the files were of standard DVD resolutions. The video info was quite a bit smaller with black boarders. Amazing then that the machine was able to produce still decent videos.---

@@joebutters4419 Looks like your DMR-BS850 came out 3 years after mine. A quick search reveals nothing about the DMR-EX75 having a microswitch at all. Perhaps customers complained about the tampering device, they discontinued it. I still have it collecting dust. This is intriguing me to the point where I'm going to take the case off it tomorrow.

@@joebutters4419 Couldn't wait for tomorrow. Oh what a fool I've been. Just seen that the two microswitches were in fact just two flexible earthing strips to align with the metal top cover. Why I didn't do a simple continuity test, I'll never know. So the problem of occasional corruption of one of the two HDD FAT areas was likely caused by MS Windows sending garbage (as it does) via my USB to IDE interface. Well, at least those many days of highly annoying fault-finding have been resolved!

This recorder uses a proprietary file system, not anything Linux knows.
