I think that there are very few bee keepers out there who do not wonder how much honey they are going to get from their bees. I know for me, as soon as I see the first blooms of spring appear, I'm thinking, I sure hope our weather is good because I want to get a some honey this year. Well, mother nature cooperated very well with the bees this spring and gave us just enough water and sun to have a really good nectar flow.
For 4 days, my good friend Chef Randy and I, gathered honey supers from all our out yards and brought them back to the honey hut at the abbey.Then, on Saturday morning, Wreck it Ralph, along with Chef Randy and myself, proceeded to process 350 frames of honey. It was a full day of sticky honey, and lots of laughs, and at the end of it, 140 gallons of the liquid gold were stored in drums and buckets.
So, get ready to watch the entire process of extracting honey from comb to drum, and a few laughs for good measure. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

@Alex G I was living up in Maine at the time. It was local bee keepers that sold to a farm that operated their own business. So, pretty sure it was sold to the farm, then the farm increased the price to make a profit.

Yeah, I know what you're talking about. You never know what Mr Ed comes up with each year, plus it's calming watching him. He's at peace, and so are the bees. I might add, at the end of that "Rendering" video he promised us a second video showing how they use the wax(candles, etc?), which he hasn't done yet. So he owes us. (Like he owes us anything at all. :-D )

Loved the honey video Jeff. Happy Birthday to your brother too. Older or younger? I loved the part where the uncapper was used. I could almost taste it. I'm a honey person myself. I live by a honey producer (www.bearmountainhoney.com), so I use their product. Raw, unfiltered and delicious. I love it. Thanks for a good video again. Ralph, Chef Randy, and as always you Jeff thank you. Keep making more, and I'll keep watching. Thank you Jesus!

My brother Pat is one year older than me, and I am blessed to have such a large, loving family, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Every hobby bee keep I know loves the extraction process. No matter how it's done, weather big machines, small machines, or no machine at all, the end result is the same, pure, raw honey. Um, um good, thank you Jesus!!!! Thanks for watching. Very nice! Who wouldn’t like working in that environment of positive and up-beat attitudes?! I hope my countenance reflects that same degree of joy. Thank you Jeff for producing these wonderful, uplifting videos. You would have us all believe that these are just wonderful, instructional videos on the joys of beekeeping. However, I see that these are each a piece of a larger work. The love of Jesus is present in each, and is evident in your warm smile and pleasant greeting at the introduction of each presentation. If each observer could be infused with even a small fraction of that, then your efforts are reaping a much larger and important harvest. Selfishly, I would ask you to please continue, and for the sake of all who watch and all who have yet to see these but someday will, I would also ask that you please continue. You’re planting very good seeds indeed. Warmest regards from the plains of Western Oklahoma,

Ones behavior is but a manifestation of ones heart, and if that heart is centered on Christ, what a joy it is to behold. Yes, we all have bad days where our selfishness crowds out the goodness we seek, but we ask for forgiveness, and get back on the right path. First, thank you for your blessing, and second, I do love the processing of honey also. For me, there is always trepidation because I am using some equipment for the first time and I'm not sure if it will work properly, and second, I ALWAYS worry about not having enough honey to supply the abbey's gift with. Regardless of the amount I send over there, it always runs out in a very short time. This time I will send 1,200 bottles over there, and I hope that will last till October when I make the next harvest. We shall see, but I have the assurance, God will provide. Thank you for your kind words and for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

@JeffHorchoff 6 лет назад
A bee can produce 1/10 of a teaspoon of honey in it's lifetime. That means 140 gallons of honey represents the work of over 1 million bees to produce that quantity. Now that's an impressive number. God's peace Kevin. Mr. Ed

I'm delighted to hear you enjoyed the video. Processing honey is part of keeping bees, but most of my videos, as you will find out for yourself, are about bee rescues. I post these videos, to show just how important bees are to our very survival, and why we should not just kill them out of ignorance. I have been rescuing bees from being needlessly destroyed for over 6 years now, and hope to continue to do so for many more years to come. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. I agree, God has blessed the Abbee Honey program. When i began keeping the bees for the monks back in 2012, I did not even have somewhere to store equipment or process honey, I can't say that anymore. The program really has taken off despite the flood in 2016 that wiped everything out. We are over 100 hives now, but I'd feel better if the number were closer to 200, we will just have to see what God has in mind for us. Thank you so much for your years of following along, I really appreciate it. God's peace Karen. Mr. Ed

To be able to see how your honey is made from catching the bees to actually extracting the honey. When does this batch of honey go on sale at the Abbey. I cannot make it to Louisiana to buy the honey but there must be some way to buy it online and I am very much looking forward to buying and paying for shipping. I really want to have YOUR honey. St. Joseph has some special meanings to me. I was born at St. Joseph hospital. My first child was born at St. Joseph Hospital. Our last name is Joseph. So you see why YOUR honey is special. i understand spinning the combs in the centrifuge clockwise for 10 minutes to extract the honey, but why do they spin it in counter clockwise for 10 minutes? its the exact same force as clockwise, unless theyre flipping the combs inside, running it in reverse makes no difference beyond what running it all in one direction would do.

Believe it or not, I'm still not finished setting the honey house up to my satisfaction. There are still issues that need to be addressed, and I think that there may be an ongoing evolution for a year or two more. Don't get me wrong, I am very happy with how things are, but I believe with a bit more mechanization, and the help of a lot of good people, the abbey's honey house could be run by just one or two people. Because I am still learning the needs of supplying a commercial honey house, I have not made a video on it, but I hope to one day. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 6 лет назад
It is incredible to think that all that honey was made from the effort of bees. A typical honey bee will produce only about 1/10 of a teaspoon full of honey in it's life time, and it takes 768 teaspoon fulls to produce one gallon. Our bees were able to produce 140 gallons of honey this spring, and if you do the math, it took over 1 million bees to produce that much honey. Now that amazing. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Same here - 350 quarts from apiary to quart jars using a 9 frame extractor, home made uncapping tank, a cold knife, 2 bottling buckets - and one person (me) in my garage. This operation is a thing of beauty, and it's a great video, but the operating overhead is unjustifiable for a sideliner my size (or your size even?) - it seems like the clean up alone for all that equipment would be a killer. I guess beefriendly and me should make our own videos on doing it without elaborate equipment.

you all should get the plastic or rubber curtains that hand on door frames so when y'all open the big door you can keep you heat or a/c in the building or at least more of it and not have it all leave as soon as you open it up

Looks like a lot of clean up after the extraction. explains the price of honey a lot of work in honey. Thanks for the video
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 5 лет назад
Actually, clean up is VERY easy. Because we have a troff/drain that runs down the center of our building, and exits under the slab in the back of the honey house, we simply wash all our machines down with hot water, we also have a tankless hot water heater just for that purpose. To clean the honey house and all the machines took 2 guys less than one hour to finish. You are correct about the price of our honey, $ 9.00 a pound is a very reasonable price considering all the work that is involved. By the way, I just posted this years edition of processing our honey, the link is below. So glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching. God's peace Delmar. Sitting here watching your fascinating videos, I have a couple of questions. I noticed in this video you were standing next to all those hives surrounded by a few thousand bees (I'm guessing) and you got stung by one of them. Firstly how bad is the sting, secondly how comes you were not wearing any protection and thirdly why don't all of the bees attack you. I appreciate your love and passion for the bees and what you do as well as really interestingly going from the whole A to B process, but I've never seen any of this before and I'm 58 and all I've ever known is that bees produce honey, how it starts and everything your showing, I've never seen before and I'm really smiling at how how it all works. Also as millions of people like me see wasps and bees and just think STING, how likely is it that we will get stung by bees. Is it true that bees only have one sting and once they sting, they will die. Well I'm off to watch more of your great videos, many thanks and all the best :-)
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 5 лет назад
The reason the bees were not stinging me, much, is because they are mainly interested in getting honey. If I move slowly or methodically, generally, I won't be stung. Still I do not recommend others following my example. By the way, the sting does hurt, but it does not linger. A bee can only sting you once, then it dies. A wasp or hornet on the other hand not only can sting multiple times without dying, it also bites. I hate wasps. god's peace Terry. Mr. Ed
