What Brand of paracetamol are you using? I'm planning on testing different solvents using this method but Panadol contains glycerol stearate which does dissolve in acetone based on my research

Holy crap the comment section missed the point. This is gold! 🤣 Definitely needed this though. I'm guessing it's just not that soluble in much correct? I'm trying to obtain most of 200g of acetaminophen for a couple projects and to see what I can with it. Honestly I'm probably being lazy and just want to do it in 1 or 2 rounds of extraction.

Sal m It depends on the solubilities. He knows what is in the tablets and whether they are soluble in water or not and whether they are polar or unpolar. By keeping track of this, it is quite easy to know what is left in the Büchner funnel and how to get rid of it

I'm about to extract acetaminophen for a future project but I'm trying to get about 200g so I don't have to redo this for a long while. 😬 Seems to need a ton of Solvent to extract though.

@@midwestchem368 Hello friend. Not yet but I also had it in mind for a future project, a synthesis of cyanin dyes. The idea was to also extract acetaminophen, turn it into phenacetine by ethylation with EtI and K2CO3 in 2-butanone, yield is in the 80s %. Followed by hydrolysis to 4-ethoxyaniline. Acetone is probably the best solvent to use to extract otc painkiller pills.

The heat gun is an ignition source for the acetone in the filter. Imagine doing that with gasoline. Acetone LEL-UEL is 2.6 - 13.0% while gasoline is actually more narrow at 1.2-7.1%. Acetone has almost twice the explosive or flammability range. Very risky move.

Lucky Chavez no hunny I was inquiring the info for a friend because they are extremely addicted and almost overdosed on Percocets and Tylenol. Where Im from this small town is being destroyed by oxycodone and oxycotins and heroin. I wanted to know how to separate/extract the Tylenol from these darn pills to at least help a friend since they dont want to quit. Do you?

The codeine salt would remain in the filter if the acetone is anhydrous, otherwise it would just get dissolved in water and end up with the paracetamol.

Co codemol is fine to take without this method. You use this method with 8mg/500mg over count meds to separate codeine from paracetamol. Do not use acetone though with that method. Use the cold water extraction

@@ryanbashaw4513 that's because codeine is a weak opiate. Try hydrocodone, morphine, oxycodone and you'll realize that kratom isn't as good. Kratom is great for withdrawals though

no, i dont think this process would work with pseudoephedrine, plus itd be cheaper to buy pseudoephedrine as a bulk chem rather than spending tons on the meds to extract from, although you do need a license IIRC to buy the stuff as its a precursor for some illicit drugs, but im sure you knew that.

If the acetone is anhydrous the pseudoephedrine salt will remain with the pill binders in the filter. But just a little amount of water would dissolve the pseudoephedrine too, especially the hydrochloride salt (with a solubility of 10 mg/ml).

no to extract codeine from this you need to chill below 10 degrees (paracetomol wont disolve in water at low temps. you then filter the water/ and the water contains codeine) there are graphs you need to consult for the amount of water matters. if you mix 500mg of paracetomol in 2 liters of water its more soluble than it would be in 25mls its very dangerous to undertake this route for codeine extraction. seek help

@@bubblelabz3660 for the proses you put tablets into water, let disolve completely while sturring then freeze 30 minutes in freezure then filter into coffee filter into a cup Water must be luke warm, even if a tiny too hot it will destroy the stuff you wsnt

@@worlore1651 So I'm getting this issue the last 3 times ive tried where, I assume, the tablets are not fully dissolving into the water and so when i try to filter there is no paracetamol sludge and filtering the liquid doesnt do anything, it is still way too cloudy to consume. Do you have any idea why this could be happening

this is like as simple as it gets. the thing you want dissolves in the chosen liquid, while not dissolving the stuff you dont want. then you take your liquid which has your dissolved stuff in it and get rid of the liquid, and now your left with the stuff you wanted.

Yes, if the pills contain a codeine salt (like codeine phosphate or codeine sulfate), and if the acetone does not contain any water (anhydrous acetone), otherwise is just gonna get dissolved with the paracetamol. You would still have to separate the codeine from the pill binders though. Also avoid boiling for too much or the codeine is gonna get decomposed by heat (75% of codeine is destroyed in 1 hour at 200 °C). If the desired product is the codeine a cold water extraction might be preferrable.

But these are just two examples and many other compounds can be prepared from paracetamol. I intend to use it as a starting material in the synthesis of a compound with a sweet taste.
