Here's an in-depth review of the Ibanez Genesis Collection RG550 Electric Guitar. I picked this up a few months ago for an 80s hair metal cover band I joined, and I wanted to talk a little bit about my thoughts on the guitar. Let me know if you have any questions!

I had to get me one of them things. Just beautiful. Road flare red. I am very happy with it. It is super versatile. You are not just restricted to metal in spite of how it looks. It absolutely sounds killer when overdriven and distorted. But, the clean tones of those pickups are gorgeous. You can do jazz and blues with it just fine. Works extremely well with ballads if you run it through a chorus. I even tried some rockabilly licks on that middle pickup. Sounded pretty damn good.

I miss my RG-550. White w/black pickguard. I added DiMarzio pickups to it. A Breed in the bridge and a PAF Pro in the neck. I wanted a FRED in the neck but my local store didn't have them and apparently they were on backorder through DiMarzio so the guy talked me into the PAF Pro. That was my second guitar. My first was a Red 1985 Ibanez Roadstar II.

The stock pups actually don't sound too bad, especially compared to Ibanez's Infinity, Quantum, & Powersound pups. I've watched several demos of the RG550 and the stock pups sounded pretty good in all of them. Well. The two big difference points is the 87 has a wizard neck + v1/s1/v2 pickups set. Whereas (2017/18) genesis has the superwizard neck + v7/s1/v8 pickups. Ibanez could make the genesis in same profile as the original 87. However, it would envolves more costs in the line production to reintroduce a old way manufacturing. But, in my opinion, about the necks comparison. In spite of super wizard not has the 80’s vibes, it’s more modern and strong. Otherwise, I think that the old set pickups has a little more “vintage” sound. Anyway, the genesis it’s a great guitar too.
@SuicideVan
@SuicideVan 4 года назад
I don't think it could be properly Japanese if they didn't use improved materials, designs, and manufacturing methods. Doing things the old way for the sake of it has been a sticking point for Suntory since aquiring Jim Beam. They just don't "get it" for better or for worse.

Hi. I'd like to ask the author of the video a question. I like RG & Jem a lot, buti've noticed they buzz a lot. In this video too, when you play clean tones, especially when single colis are involved (position 2, 3 ,4 of the toggle switch) there's a lot of buzzing. Is it normal? I have a jem, and i've tried everything: higher action, loosen the truss rod, but it keeps buzzing a lot. It's really annoying. Thanks for your answer.
@longestsoloever
@longestsoloever 4 года назад
Definitely take your guitar to a professional guitar tech for a setup. If there’s enough buzz that it’s annoying you, you should have a pro take a look at it. There’s a few factors that make these guitars a little more buzz-prone. The biggest is the jumbo frets. Positions 2, 3, and 4 bring out the most high-end frequency content, so that will really accentuate that sound. That said, to me it’s just part of the sound of these guitars, and I like the clean tone a lot (slight buzz and all).

trying to decide between this, a jackson dinky pro or the charvel so-cal (all 2019 models), leaning towards the charvel but apparently out of the 3 the ibanez has the best fr system (edge) thoughts?
@keveb4724
@keveb4724 5 лет назад
The edge is better than a Floyd IMHO. Not only that but the purple neon, desert yellow and road flare red colours of the Ibanez need to be seen to be appreciated. No photos or videos even come close to doing them justice
@VPB1218
@VPB1218 5 лет назад
If you don't have a modern Charvel I'd play one. The neck feels dry and raw like a baseball bat. Both the Jackson and Charvel have the Floyd 1000 series. The RG has an Original Edge which is literally the same trem Vai uses. Having played all three and owning a 2018 RG exactly like the reviewer and a Charvel I say with confidence the RG is the superior instrument. I feel like it's better built, has a better trem, better neck, and I personally love the bridge pickup.
@4004010
@4004010 5 лет назад
Edge and Lo pro edge are the best floating tremolos for Ibanez guitars. These are a result between Ibanez and Gotoh long relationship. The FR is awesome, in my opinion the 1984 has the best arm system. The edge arm is great too, but after some time the bushes has to be replaced. But it’s inexpensive. ;)

One month playing my RG550 I have to say it is NOT hype, these are excellent guitars. My complaint is the same as I've read online so many times They could have smoothed out the fret ends lol that's a minor issue that will get resolved when I do my first string change on it. Maybe the heel is a little rough as well. You have to plug these in to really appreciate them, they come set up great and these stock V7 V8 pick ups sound pretty good. Overall I'd give the RG 550 9.3 out of 10. That's a 9.3 on a thousand dollar guitar Get one! Small edit after playing 1 year, the "heel" is a little bulky when playing the higher frets but other than that I can't say anything bad about this guitar.

Thanks. I only count 6 ad placements on my end, though RU-vid might be doubling some of them up. I dunno man, just trying to make a living.

@@longestsoloever i already have another prestige. But it is getting old(14years). The japanese manufacturing is the only one i hold in high regard so a cheap prestige is a no brainer.

Sorry, but AANJ is on their highest end models as well. That horrid neck plate it the homage of their design back in the 80s. It is the only reason for me to not buy this guitar. Otherwise it is a very very nice axe. Cheers

The fretboard radius is typically measured in inches, representing the radius of an imaginary circle, of which the fretboard sits at the edge of. A larger radius indicates a bigger circle, and therefore a flatter fretboard.
