Hi from the Midwest US! I don't know if you'll see this but I have struggled with my depression mess and single parenthood since the beginning. I have watched almost every cleaning channel on RU-vid hoping to find someone like you. Your videos did something to my brain, I washed dishes and cleaned floors and things that I watched you do and you helped my anxiety so much. Your joy and happiness was literally contagious through the screen and for the first time I cleaned without judging myself. Your tips showed me I wasn't a bad person but that I really had no technique for cleaning some of this stuff and it took so long before it worsened my depression when I couldn't get anything done between motherhood and work. I cleaned my whole nasty kitchen watching your videos and I cried when it was all sparkly. It hasn't looked this clean since I moved in. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart!

Depression, especially extreme depression, can physically harm your heart. It re-adjusts the hormones and chemicals in your body, and at advanced stages this does in fact compromise the structural integrity of your body's tissues. Yes, depression can make someone "lazy", but for many people there's a very real physical aspect that causes very real, clinical exhaustion. If you've ever felt so sad that your heart actually hurts, then you've felt a shade of that. I'm not going to get into the unfairness of this entire reply chain -- I thought about it, but I'm not going to be able to change how people on this website treat each other. But I will step up and say, that just because mental health CAN make someone merely lazy, doesn't mean that is always and without any exception the case; and just because we've had a certain experience in our mental health journey ourselves, doesn't mean that every single other person in the world has the same experience that we do. "Lazy" is also just such a shame-based word, and while shame can be motivating to some, to others it makes the problem worse because it makes you feel like you're worthless, and what's the point when you feel worthless? idk, either way this is so much more nuanced of a subject than a lot of people seem to believe.

I find that placing a trash bin in each room or in areas where you tend to spend a lot of time and will probably eat there really helps. Like placing a bin next to the couch or the bed. It keeps the trash off the floor if you just can't muster the energy to get up everytime. I know it's hard for people who don't suffer from depression to understand what is so hard about just walking to the trash bin, but depression can sometimes feel paralyzing. There are times I would lie on the couch starving and not be able to get myself up to make some food. @@meineliebling9395 It is often a process. You bounce back and forth for a bit, but your periods of success become longer and more consistent over time, and it becomes easier to 'bounce back' every time you get off track. :) It is important not to get discouraged every time you get off track, but instead focus on the pride and success when you do succeed, and use that as motivation. Using shame mostly just drains your mental energy, and make it even harder to get things done.

If your appartment is currently in a state like this, I want to let you know you can turn your life around! I lived like this for about 5 years - maybe even worse than that (no working shower) and more trashes - because of depression and lonliness after I finished college and all my friends moved away, a relationship ended, I couldnt find a job and I was all allone. But one day I said STOP, I got rid of everything. It was very embaressing, I had to hire a professional cleaning company because I couldn`t deal with it all on my own, everyone in the aparment building saw what kind of a messie I was, and the landlord was so shocked. It was probably the worst day of my life and my lowest point so far. After that, I moved back to my hometown, for a while I had to stay with my parents but that was alright. I reconnected with my old friends from school, I found new friends, I found a job that I quite like. This is 6 years ago now, I`m married and we got a little daughter. My husband knows about this bad time, but it`s in the past now. I still struggle sometimes with keeping everything tidy, but I just have to think about what relieve it was when ALL of the mess was gone and I could make a fresh start, it motivates me to keep everything under control, because I never want to get to this point again!

If you live in the U.S., be careful about using toilet bowl cleaner. The brands sold here can eat the finish off your chrome and porcelain. Barkeeper's Friend is a good acidic cleaner if you need an alternative. There are also limescale cleaners sold - just be sure to check the labels to see if they are safe for chrome and porcelain. You can also soak paper towels in vinegar and wrap them around the limescale areas. Pour a little more vinegar over them, and leave them there for a while (30 minutes or longer). It will soften the limescale so you can scrub it away easily. (Edited to add: Toilet cleaner is fine for toilets, just be careful using it on sinks, tubs, and faucets.)

I remember one of the best career talks we had in school was man who worked for the local health department. His job was basically very similar to this. He would come into peoples homes after neighbors had complained about it being unsafe etc. and the city would clean them. He showed before and after photos of a lot of the homes he cleaned. One of them I’ll never forget was a bed with just beer bottles piled up everywhere around it. The woman was an alcoholic and had died recently. Her family was in desperate need of someone to help clean her home. Everyone kind of gasped at the photos and he said “people ask all the time how can it get this bad?” And he said “it doesn’t happen all at once. You leave one bottle on the floor and say you’ll clean it up later and then you leave the next one on the floor and say you’ll clean them both up later and soon it becomes a problem that seems too overwhelming to solve.” It just made me really think. Because if you’re depressed for a long period of time that can become so overwhelming so quickly.

The start is the hardest. A small tip take it step by step. What I do to clean is I set a timer on 15 minutes on bad days and 30 min to a hour on good days then I clean until the timer runs out. That way you don't hit the feeling of not doing enough. You do 15 minutes and that is already alot. And eacht day you have a moment of being proud of yourself. You cleaned!!

What you do is so important and life changing for someone who can't do it themselves. It's a gift to be able to clean and organize for someone who is mentally disorganized. It can be difficult for them to start . I'm glad I watched.

It's hard to start. The first 30 minutes are hardest of you suffer from depression but once you start seeing it's got better there is s reward dopamine system in the brain and that's why Auri love this job because she get high on dopamine as she works through but I think it's like that with someone else's house because she's not emotionally connected to the clutter. And it's therefore easier clean someone else's house than your own. But when I am depressed I know it's better to get up and start cleaning than being idle in bed because it will make you feel less depressed when the result comes and it's better to do it in very long stretches for hours and days without break because of the dopamine. If you do little you don't get the high feeling and secondly you might not get motivated soon enough. If you want break the cycle you must break it once and like your life depends on it.

What I love about this channel, is that you don't judge, and always talk about the people you help with respect and understanding. Lots of people love to judge them, and step on people who are already lying down, because they have never been in the situation themselves, and don't understand. But not here.
