Best thing I ever did was to stop buying the knock off versions of shoes. I waited until a sale, went direct to the website and got an additional first time customer discount on top and brought a pair of uggs. They have out lasted all the knock off all together, no bad wear (I don’t drive so walk a lot). I recently did the same with smarter shoes invested in quality ballet pumps, loafers and sneakers. Kicking myself for not doing it sooner! Samson we see you stealing the limelight sir!
Amen!! I have learned this lesson the hard way. I've bought cheap fake uggs every year when a real pair would last me for a decade and end up costing less in the long run!
I've bought knock offs before too. I did it with Ugg's so I would not mind taking my dog out in the snow/wet.. I appreciate them for that. But as I've gotten older ( 51 now ) I started to buy good quality shoes in my 40's because my feet were always killing me in the cheap shoes. Totally worth it to spend more, and my shoes always last a long time, so I don't really mind spending more on them.
OMG, Samson was soooo proud when you let him sit side by side. Look at his posture! It seems he's about to receive a gold medal. It's visible he adores you so much ❤️ I enjoyed this video. Keep them coming! 🤗
samson reminds me of rachel oates's dog as well, two of the most well-behaved doggies I have seen on youtube. like they have this proud look on their face as if saying, "do you see my human? aren't they amazing??"
Because of this video I got rid of two bags of "what-if" and "someday" clothes, and now I have space in my closet for the things that actually fit and make me happy to wear. Thanks for that.
This was great, Carla. I can relate to buying clothes that don't fit; I tend to buy clothing that is too big thinking it hides my perceived problem areas. After a few wears, I realize how ill-fitting it is. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to your next video!
"THEY DONT EVEN SOUND LIKE SHOES" Well done lady!!! Its been very inspiring to watch you grow over the course if this project. And now you get to reap the rewards: a wardrobe that doesnt make you feel bad about yourself ❤
I like how you can randomly rescue/find nice stuff being given away for free while on a walk. It says a lot about fashion in general, being socially conscious, politically aware and savvy about your style.
Glad I'm not the only one who has to tackle things in stages! I do have a hard time letting go of smaller clothes that are just SO CUTE but I need to focus on where I'm at now and being happy about the wardrobe I'm able to use and enjoy. Thanks for the vid!
This is exactly what I did recently! I gave my sister 2 garbage bags full of clothes and a lot with tags on them still she was thrilled because we have the same style! And she’s like 2 sizes smaller then me! I kept asking myself why am I keeping and buying things too small? I’m a size 14 and I’m still struggling to accept I’m no longer an 8 or 10. And the best part is I wear black leggings and big t shirts just about every day of my life and those clothes live in my dresser not even my closet 😂🤦🏻♀️ I think most of us women struggle with this!
I like that you don't speed up your videos, my favorite thing is that you talk us through all the steps and why we got to so much 'no' stuff and what we're doing different now
Love watching this, so relaxing and such good tips. Also, this quote changed how I always thought about clothes: Clothes were made to fit you, you weren't made to fit the clothes. Sizes are irrelevant and I'm so tired of clothing companies shaming people for their ridiculous sizing that doesn't matter. Just saying 😊
Nice job decluttering! Just wanted to share my personal closet struggles and solution maybe it could help someone. I was always wondering why some clothes would not suit me/ looking like a ghost. What has helped me personally is to find out my skin undertone/ color type. I have yellow/golden undertones and turnes out I'm a fall type. When I buy clothes now, I'm watching out for the right colors and if it all matches with the rest of my closet. It totally prevents me from buying the wrong clothes. Much happier now with all of it and my eyes now pop when I look in the mirror 😄👍 What also helped was searching for my body type, so now I only wear high waist pants and it looks so much better on me! Greetings from the Netherlands 😊
Carla I have hung onto clothes for over 6 years now hoping to fit back in the my clothes I finally decluttered them and donated everything to a woman’s shelter after watching you it feels so good thanks for what you do.
i agree, your little gallery area is so nice! i realized this summer i was buying still way too small! i buy large and XLs now i actually like my clothes again! DEF RELATE
I too go through my cloths every 3 - 4 month. I always end up wearing the same things. 🤔 cut mine down to half. All things too big I passed on to a friend who is in her first trimester of her pregnancy. Made her super happy. Love you videos you are simple and honest about yourself. I just love that about you. 🥰
I got some “fake uggs” from Costco like 5 years ago and they were real lambskin and everything for like $30. I wore them every day around the house for years and they’re still incredible. Keep an eye out! Sometimes they have incredible products like that. And don’t get me started on their organic strawberry jelly 🤣
Absolutely beautiful! Love to hear your process for decluttering and always enjoy Samson standing guard and giving you all of his strength and support ❤️
Follow up after watching - Awesome job on the declutter, Carla. You parted with a ton of things! Hope Nordstrom will give you a credit for the jumpsuit. It's lovely - my fantasy self would have bought it too! I can't wait to see part 2!
thank you catherine!! I hope so ...they have a good return policy. I'm still sad to let it go :( but I am at least 20 pounds away from wearing it so I trust I'll find something that fits and hasthe same vibe in the future 😄❤️
@@TheCarlaProject yeah, I can relate to the sadness of letting it go. Perhaps you'll find something with the credit that you can wear now and will add excitment to your current capsule. I'll be cheering you on! ❤
Great job 👍 I think the clothes and shoes are a difficult for most women. I have mine down to the perfect spot for me. I have 6 pairs of pants. They are all palazzo pants so they can be dressed up or kept casual. Then I have 6 dressy tops for them and 7 casual tops. The only thing that changes is in the winter I have long sleeve tops and short in the summer. I got tired of standing in front of my closet not knowing what to wear. I highly recommend watching Dana K White. She's not a minimalist but she is all about decluttering. You need to check out her stuff on the container theory. It's been a blessing to view decluttering this way. Ps Sampson is so adorable 🥰
When you were going through your shoes at 6:10 it sounded like a grown up version of the child's game duck duck goose 😂 I think you just invented a decluttering game called keep keep lose!
They do say we wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time . I had to seriously declutter as both my older children had to move home. I gave up my bedroom and on my have a single bed and a rail in my dining area. I got rid of so much stuff and still only use about a Quarter of what I have left - basically 2 prs of jeans, 2 long sleeved tops and a couple of shirts is all I wear atm!
I totally agree with you about the clothes sizes. When I changed my mindset about my size and body form, ( in the way that you describe it, and I even bought some beautiful cloth3s for big size) then I could like to get some inner piece and after a couple of months I was able to start life style chamg3s that I needed. I loosed many kilOs and h@s not got th3m back.
That was super fun! Well done! I’m always sad saying goodbye to any piece (I still remember why I bought it) but I keep in mind how great an uncluttered space feels & how nice it is to see only great wearable items in my closet.
I really like your approach to this cleanout and providing us the honest reasons why you took things out. Your capsule wardrobe also has a good mix of items and colors, so I hope it works out as well as I anticipate! A suggestion I have is to take note of every time you have a thought like, "Oh man, if only I had this in blue" or "A longer coat would look so nice with this" or "If the shape was different, I'd use it so much more". I used those types of hints to figure out what was missing from my wardrobe. I tried to stick to that as my shopping guide last year, and I was very happy with my purchases!
In the past I did the same thing, bought clothes that were too small... I bullied myself...🤔 Now I learned to love myself the way I am, and threat myself only with clothes that are comfy and lovely. I am tired of fulfilling the beauty standard and to dress what men would like. I am just myself, celebrating myself, being thankful for my body and give my best to stay healthy. I love your videos and your calming voice. Always so inspiring thank you 🤗 💚🧚🏽
Carla is at it again!!! 💪😍Your progress is amazing. And also the realizations you made on the way, such good stuff! I have 7 pairs of shoes, 2 of them are Birckenstock. A few years ago I got cheap knock-offs, but they were so uncomfortable 🤦🏼♀️And I didn't really appreciate them because I knew they were cheap. So now I rather go with the real thing if I can afford it or just don't buy it at all. Oh, I also have gum boots - does that make me a weirdo? Yes, I think it does🤣
Oh my gosh same... about not appreciating or valuing the cheaper version of things!! And having gum boots makes you cool 😄. Always wanted some even though LA doesn't warrant having a pair😂.
You can take your old shoes (except sandals to Nike) to recycle. H&M/Zara takes clothing and bedlinens to recycle. I know you can't always trust fast fashion places but still, there is hope!
This video came at a good time as I am making it a goal of mine to declutter and organize my closet by the end of the year. I've been holding on to things for way too long and there is so much I don't wear. Thanks for making it look easy and wish me luck!
You are so right about the 20% figure. I tried last year a trick someone told me about turning all your hangers backwards. Then, when you actually wore something and liked it, turning it forward when you put it back. After a year (or whatever period you choose), anything not turned forward was never worn and easier to part with. I got rid of a LOT!
Hey Carla, I have been obsessively watching your shows - you are so down to earth and such a good company! I know this is an old vid, so just wanted to make sure that you are aware that all fabric items can be put in clothing recycling bins, and they will be used for rags if they can be.❤❤❤
I think that you need a bureau of drawers in your bedroom or something with drawers that you can put in your closet. You bedroom is a beautiful room. I love the window and that you look out on to greenery. Very soothing.
Getting my personal color analysis was the best investment in myself. Saves me SOOOO much time and money when I’m clothes shopping. Plus my clothes mix and match much better now. My clothes closet makes sense now.
@@TheCarlaProject I got referred by a friend to the person she used in northern California. Not sure what city you are in. I would check online and search “personal color analysis” and then your city and state to see if you have anyone local who can do it for you. I believe there are people who will do it remotely / zoom call for you, but I would not trust the results. I wish i would have done this when I was in my 20s. 🤦♀️
What a great idea to do a first sort of just yes or no. Talk about simplifying the process! I love your closet - the light from the window is so cool! I really enjoyed this video. I recently decluttered my closet, but you’ve inspired me to take a second look. I’m sure there are a couple things in there that belong to a fantasy self. I know I’ve said this before, Carla, but you are so relatable and “real“! I hope you have a wonderful holiday! 🎄❤️🎄
I buy a size smaller all the time also!! Great tips. Love that you are finding confidence and acceptance as you are. Super inspiring.....also Samson is a star!!!
Keep those hangers! What’s going to happen now is the more you declutter clothes the more you learn what not to buy. Then you will begin to fill your closet with more pieces that you love.
It looks great! Last time I decluttered I made a box of ‘things I want to shrink into’, if I’ve not shrunk next time I declutter then I’ll get rid of those clothes
Exactly that’s kind of what I did for my last clothing declutter six months ago. My weight is stable right now I think I’ll lose some more in the new year since I’m making working out more a priority
Such a cute apartment. Loooove that bedroom window! So much light. I've got shorts and a t shirt with much bigger bleach stains. I just use them as house/cleaning clothes. Saw someone suggest pool noodles to help boots stand straight.
Great job! Your progress is amazing and inspiring...it is always a challenge for me to not buy for that 5 year old part of me that loves getting dressed up in all the sparkles and totally impractical things :) Hope you are well. Happy Holidays!
Been following you for a good while now and you radiate the energy and vibe I need in my life, so thank you so much for the efforts you put into your videos and not least how incredibly well reflected you are and for daring to share these reflections with the rest of us. Hugs from Norway!
Love it Carla !! I feel it makes total sense. I’m so the same but going to wait now until the new year the declutter. I never seem to go anywhere these days to wear anything beautiful so find myself dressing up to stay home. Keep doing you beautiful lady xx
Well done :-). I love your energy! Have you thought about maybe getting a storage box at the foot of your bed? That would look nice and be very practical for extra blankets, pillows, etc...just an idea!
I had the same experience decluttering clothes. Clothes was the last category I tackled and I was scared I wouldn’t have enough to wear. The truth is I have a 10th of what I originally had and could still get rid of more. I had a habit of buying items as a form of entertainment without a clear idea of my own style. I now have a clear idea of my style and like my clothes more and wear more of what I have.
Another reason to buy clothes that fit you now is not only can you buy new clothes if you lose weight but you can also reward yourself by getting the clothes that fit you now to be custom tailored to fit!
My dogs "help" me clean and declutter just like Samson does! I love them, but they really get in the way. I love your decluttering videos - they are so realistic (thank you!!) and soothing.
hello 🧡 from England, i am loving your channel 🥰 i know in England we can items of clothing to h&m to be recycled (stained, items with holes) and they give you a voucher of £5 to spend i store. just a little idea so not to many items are going to land fill 👍☺️ xx
Hi Carla! Just wanted to say I love watching your declutter videos! You give me so much inspiration to continue to keep my space minimal and decluttered. I’m only keeping what I need and what I love. Also, you are looking so beautiful! 🥰
I just wanna share that I worked through a lot of mental baggage a couple of years ago. I struggled with my body, for one thing, and the way I got past it was by refocusing my attention not on what my body looks like, but instead on what it does for me. So... I love my body because I can dance and kick and run around. I can play sports and goof around. I can carry things and roll down hills. I can taste good food and look after myself. I hope that helps someone value their body differently. I'm so glad I made that mental shift before having a kid and my body's appearance changed. Wishing you well.
I love your tips about how to focus on ONE project and how to break that up in to small chunks and how to make it less over whelming. Thanks, because I relate
Have you ever thought about doing a Project 333? It didn't really work for me, because I don't live in a place with distinct seasons, but it gave me a lot of insight about styles I gravitate too. It DEFINITELY pushed me to wear "special" clothes on the day to day. Another great vid, Carla!
My fantasy self waste so much money on makeup that I now realize I don’t like wearing makeup. Clothes that clearly don’t look good on me but I was influenced into buying. Since I started to be more honest with myself and what my style is I don’t buy anything unless I have to. Since I’ve gained weight I haven’t bought any new clothes mostly because I always buy oversized shirts so thank goodness I did because I barely have clothes that fit.
Carla! You are such an inspiration with how you are navigating your journey thru decluttering your life! Being genuine & fearless is serving you well. I can relate to so much of what you share - from how you shop to why you keep certain items be they clothing or decor....I too have been learning what is serving & what is not actually serving me in my daily life!! I found that getting rid of clothes that did not fit or were "goal" clothes made looking at my closet so much more pleasurable! I realized that always seeing those clothes that still didn't fit made me feel bad like a failure in a way - and EVERY time I opened my closet - there they were - putting me down! It was really enlightening to understand how that was affecting me! And letting those things go added joy to my life in two ways - knowing that someone else could make good use of the items - as well as getting rid of things that actually made me feel shitty!! So thank you for putting out a video that had me shaking my head yes through practically the whole thing..,LoL!! Ok - just a thought/question for you - Would you ever consider cutting your hair off & wearing a close cropped look? I ask this bcse of my own journey & learning that my hair was like a security blanket & chopping it all off was so liberating! It made me feel much lighter & my whole body felt lifted! It was so much easer to wear hats & scarves...I adored showing off earrings better & showering in half the time! Now I have it in a bob longer in the front real short & tight in the back. You have such a beautiful face & I think you would look fabulous with either of those styles!! Just food for thought. I look forward to your next video....and I wish you a blessed holiday season! ♥
oh my i meant to comment back when you wrote this as i was thinking of doing a short hair style that week!!! ive done short before but the problem is it only looks good the day i leave the salon and then becomes unruly and not cute. still. i may do a chin length bob at summer time. looks so chic i think!! xoxo
Wow what a huge amount you got done. I definitely need to deal with clothes. Sadly the sizes are ALL messed up for me. I have shoes that I've kept because so many times I've gotten rid of shoes and wished I hadn't since it's hard to find shoes that fit right and it seems like even good brands are getting cheaper feeling today. But I still do need to at least get rid of ones that are not comfortable or I don't wear. Same with belts. Some I have are way too small. :( Last year I did pull out a bunch of clothes I didn't feel like I wore. I put them in boxes to see if I missed any of them. I didn't, so now I will most likely go through just to make sure there isn't other things mixed in there but then donate them. I keep wanting to sell stuff but I NEVER do. I love how Samson was once again a total support in your decluttering journey.
Yeah I have a bag of clothes in my car that I keep saying I’ll sell. I’m thinking of just going to the local thrift shop that buys clothes secondhand. I need to give myself a deadline if I don’t do it by the end of January then I need to just donate to friends or a shelter
I can totally relate! Let it all go and keep only what you can wear, love and feel good in now. You are gorgeous so take your time to find clothes that make you feel that way.
I can relate to buying the wrong size. It took me a long time to stop that habit. (I can sew, too, so I'd get things I could "fix"). I did finally get to a place that I'd get things ONLY if it fit perfectly and I was so excited that I'd wear it home.
The shoes you mentioned buying cheap instead of the real brands, it's ALWAYS worth getting the real brand. The Uggs I purchased six-seven years ago are still in amazing condition and have held up beautifully. Buy the brands, look after them, and they'll last year's! 🖤
I am only 8 minutes in, you just finished your shoes, and I'm subscribing. I'm SO impressed with you! That was the smartest shoe purge I have ever seen! Inspiring!
I love that you tell us about your weaknesses and your struggles when it comes to body acceptance and shopping. ❤️❤️❤️ You really did a great job in your bedroom and closet. Everything sparks joy now. ❤️
This was such a helpful video, girl I can so relate. I finally had to realize I was buying clothes for my fantasy self.😔 I have wasted so much money doing this.
You’ve given me an idea oh how I will organize my wardrobe/dresser area . You made great progress . I have a bag and almost another bag worth of donations. Need to go thru my shoes and see which ones I’m actually going to use and are comfortable. Moved to another state so it’s more rain and cold weather now and well still adjusting to it. So far I’ve included some pieces to keep me warm and decluttering the ones I no longer need or use.
As always, great video 💜 I love your relaxed and non-dramatic way of talking, that way I’ll never get sick of you lol 😅 Also, I can relate. Every now and again I buy jeans that are just a little bit too tight. They fit, but are very uncomfortable so I never wear them… really stupid habit that I am at least aware of now.
Yes!! I buy my jeans too tight so then I only end up wearing one or two pair that are comfortable but my favorite jeans are the ones that are too tight ☹️
Great video! Now you inspired me to even declutter even more. 🙂 I am just learning to keep things I actually want to keep. It is indeed a hard lesson to learn
