New subscriber! Such a transformation, I never thought about adding light colored paint to topcoat (only dark) but this worked great. Do you find in your market that the higher priced items take longer to sell, even though they are totally worth the price for the extra details like drawer liner, feed and wax, extra wood filling, new legs/hardware, etc. It seems like people want a garage sale price on marketplace for flipped pieces in my area.
@buildingbridget
@buildingbridget Год назад
Hi Heidi, thanks for the sub! 🙌 Good question - I try to be selective on which pieces I'll put all the extra cost/effort into. If it's a nice MCM or just solid wood piece that I know from experience has a decent selling point, I'll go the extra mile and do drawer liners, bamboo mat/fluting details, add new legs, etc. I've spent a while fine-tuning my approach on what pieces to flip and how to market it best, which has helped me to increase my prices by hundreds of $$ over the last year or so!
@deborahsmith27
@deborahsmith27 2 месяца назад
How do you fill in the holes/cracks if you want to keep the wood and stain it,?
@buildingbridget
@buildingbridget 2 месяца назад
That’s always trick tbh. You have to either get a wood filler that’s stainable (most say they are but really aren’t very 😅) or you have to learn to do post-finish touch ups with Mohawk Blendal sticks or something similar.

I found a soldi wood dresser but the top has this wood paper covering, is there a place to get that covering to replace or just remove layer?
@buildingbridget
@buildingbridget Месяц назад
Hmmm if it is what I’m thinking of then I def don’t know of any way to replace the “paper” layer. If you’re tryna keep the wood finish on the dresser I’d try and remove the top and replace it with plywood to match and edge band. If you’re planning on painting anyways, no need, just paint over the current top.

This is amazing! How much was the selling price? I’m wondering if the extra time of adding the mats, etc bumped up the price a lot? Thanks! Edit* also asking bc my husband is ALWAYS trying to pressure me into doing “quick flips” of just slapping paint on it and selling cheap 😳 and I’m like noooo I have to make it a stunner 😂
@buildingbridget
@buildingbridget Год назад
LOL I totally feel you! I will say that I think adding this bamboo mat detail ups the value a lot for me. I sold the piece for $550 but in retrospect I probably could have/should have sold it for closer to $850. Without the detail it probably would have got $500-600. Totally depends on your area though! I think your strategy with flipping pieces should depend on the goal. If your goal is to make a lot of income doing it then going for complex stunner pieces all the time isn't always the best bet imo because they can take so long and throw so many curveballs. If your goal is just to have a creative outlet while making some small side income - go for the stunners! Personally I like to have a combo 😊

First tip would be to research what you have. She even has the metal plate identifying the brand... this should have been restored, or in its original state, she should have just sold it for $200-300 and called it a day.

Did you line the gun container with zip lock bag?

Yes I did 😂 It helps keep the paint tub clean and mess free! Though full transparency I've been having a harder time with this technique lately - the bag keeps ripping while it's inside the bucket. So I've stopped doing it that way for a bit.

another vintage ruined from paint
@beckstheninja
@beckstheninja Год назад
In your logic, should elderly women not be allowed to wear makeup? The bones are the same, she just got a makeover to accentuate her beauty. The older style wouldn't fit in many modern homes. Would it be better that the piece were burned or tossed in a landfill? Perhaps it would be spared destruction but would sit unused and unwanted in a basement, garage, or thrift store. Because of this makeover, this dresser will now have appeal to many homeowners and will mostly likely be purchased, used, and loved. In my logic, this vintage dresser was given new life, not ruined. And Bridget did thorough and beautiful work.
@buildingbridget
@buildingbridget Год назад
Becca you're a queen - I agree with everything you said!! ❤️ Appreciate your comment and you're most definitely right, the new owner of the piece absolutely loved it and I had a ton of folks lined up behind them in case the sale fell through. Hi Bridget! Can you please help me with these questions? - How to choose sandpaper grit for regular sanding, sanding for the wash effect, and smooth out after painting? -How to take the dust off if we do not have a vacuum? Thanks
@buildingbridget
@buildingbridget Год назад
Hi there! For sanding you're generally always going to wanna work your way up to finishing with 220 grit. Start with a lower grit like 80 if you're having a really hard time cutting through the surface, but typically I start with 120/150 and work up to 220. After you've finished painting don't use anything more abrasive than a brown paper bag or else you'll leave scratch marks. There's not much you can do about the dust if you don't have a shop vac. You can get one pretty cheap second-hand though usually!

Hey there! Sorry, I've never resized a drawer before. It'd probably be tough because you'd have to resize the opening frame in the vanity as well - it may be possible but it's such a case by case kind of thing that I couldn't really help much over a RU-vid comment :/

First time here. I saw in the thumbnail your smiling sweet face and thinking you are a teenager or a young adult. I didn't expect much, honestly. As a beginner myself in refinishing furniture I am always in search for nice project to get some inspiration and how to info. But this was so well presented and turned out so nice! Very modern but classy as well. Chapeau. Keep being yourself.You got a new subscriber. 😊

I love hitting up Ace Hardware to check their oops paints because they frequently have Benjamin Moore high end paints. I love working with Benjamin Moore paints! High end paints make a difference. Tip: you can make interior paint into chalk paint with a little water and plaster of Paris. Then you don’t have to pay like $40 for a quart . You can get a gallon for that same price or cheaper if you grab a miss tint

I wonder if a manual hand saw would have split the bamboo as well?

That’s a good question I’m not actually sure! 🤔 I do have a miter saw now though so I use that and it works great 👍
