More high voltage, more high current, more high speed high intertia rotating equipment, more dangerous experiments which make it even more interesting! When I see Sam's Trains and experiment, I think oh no here we go again. Did you know that a jet engine powered prototype locomotive was actually made in real life in America?

as a person who also made a jet-powered train using hot glue, an EDF, and a train chassis. I've noticed that hauling performance increases when you have it pushing instead of pulling, this is because the train cars don't interfere with the jetwash. Yours looks much scarier than mine though!

Love it. Tri-ang did it first with their R752 Battle Space Turbo Car. You added afterburners ! Love the aircraft carrier arrester hook idea. Worked a treat.

I really do like these experiment videos. As a suggestion, how about moving the jet engine propeller on to an O gauge or G gauge frame and cranking the power up further? The tracks and wheels can take more power at those gauges and the wider axle base should provide extra stability. You could even have a go at streamlining it. Looking forward to the next one 😁

that final propeller loco with the 5-pole motor (from earlier video) did achieve a scaled up speed of mach 1.16 (on conversion of 850 MPH to Mach speed) so still very impressive.

This reminds me of thomas and the jet engine all over agian. Opinion: put thomas at the front of the turbine and let them run.

Going as fast as possible with a fan. Basically, about 80% of the speed of sound, 760 mph, which cannot be exceeded with air-powered drive. Other than the jet engine. Let's hope that, one day, Sam will be working on approaching the speed of light, for inter-planetary travel. Cheers from Canada :-)

One way to overcome the the stability issue is parallel sets of track. The only thing is making sure the tracks are precisely spaced along the test strip. Then have the duct mounted between two running chassis parallel with each other. Just a thought for the future.

Another mad experiment by Sam ! I love it ! Some ideas : 1) do a loop with rails and try to run a train on it ; 2) run on scale some transcontinental trains. E. G. : Trans-Siberian : 9289 km, in OO = 123 km to run, Le Canadien/Canadian = 4466 km, in OO = 59 km to run, Amtrak Sunset Limited = 3211 km, OO scale 43 km to run ; 3) try to run a real diesel locomotive in O scale (OO, think it's not possible). If I find more, i let you know !

1960s BR: I hope you R&D blokes are taking notes. And so five of the BR Class 13 "Snails" entered service pulling commuter trains out of London. Unfortunately, BR was being an impulsive buyer at the time, and never tested the locomotives, so they developed a host of problems from the start, including: Rocketing out of the engine terminal so quick they derailed Rocketing out of the station so quick they derailed. A tendency to fry their electronics systems every run. Needing a fan so big it couldn't fit in Paddington. The big snails plastered on the sides coming loose and flying off at high speeds. And so the Snail Class was unceremoniously retired after 12 hours of service. BR was so embarrassed by the failure that they not only scrapped them, but dumped them in the Mariana Trench. The class was almost forgotten about by the model manufacturers until Sam kitbashed a relatively accurate model for his OO layout, which, like the prototypes, lasted all of 12 hours before being retired.

Just a quick warning, Sam! If you do a version 3.0 of this with e.g. a lawn mower motor, you might end up being thrown out of the house for making holes in the roof! Great fun to watch, hope Salvatore/Sylvester get a decent burial...

Overall, amazing experiment you made today! That big fan on this locomotive beats the 2 propellers on the other locomotive you did an experiment on! Imagine this being a Thomas & Friends character, imagine what it’ll look like when it looks like this!
