My turkeys have begun walking the woods a long way from home, but so far seem fine to do so. On this day I caught them half a mile up the road away from my gate.
I have wild turkeys. One is a 100% eastern and even though he's tamed enough to come up and eat from your hand he flies and roams more than the rio's and merriam's turkeys I have. I've had to build a big flight pen for him and keep him penned up so he won't disappear on me. At least until I get more hatching eggs from my source and get a lot more of those genetics. I have, and its been a big influence on how I interpret bird behavior. Especially the galliforms like turkeys and chickens. I'm convinced my gamefowl are smart along the lines of a crow.
Possibly. I try to catch videos of the chickens in flight but when I have camera in hand they don't swarm like they do randomly when I'm not ready to film.
Dude, my guineas are scaring off my new tom. Neighbor keeps calling me to come get him. Fortunately he sees me and follows me but any advice? Got him because we have two lonely ladies, does he need another female?
@Florida Bullfrog thanks we should be good guineas have accepted him. He has been so good not an ounce of aggression until he met his reflection in the bumper of a neighbors truck. Again thankyou we are a year into this, and having so much fun.
I would be concerned that they would spread diseases and possibly breed with wild populations weakening there genetics. Livestock, dogs , animals of any kind and neighbors need to contain themselves to there property in order to avoid future conflicts.
The gamefowl don't travel near as far. They stay within a few hundred yards of the house, which I think is too their credit. That turkey gobbler got popped by a bobcat a couple of weeks ago about 300 yards from the house. I'm hunting the bobcat now.
