Jason is 40, I was 42 in my profile picture, I'm now 58. If you're in your 20s get out and enjoy exploring before you're too old to hike up mountains. I still want to go out but time is ticking away and before too long we'll be too old and feeble to do this anymore. Thanks Jason for your amazing channel of videos. I've been watching them for about 10 years now. I hope you find some gold in your mine and to share your journey with us all.

I know what ya mean. I'm fifty one now and if I hadn't beaten the snot out of myself in my teens, twentys and thirtys I'd still be able to do the things that I did in my twentys, only slower. Cuttin timber and fighting fires, drinking and brawling and hiking off into the easten Oregon desert looking for shiny sh**t don't do your body any wonders. Buy I had a grand time, great kids and now grand kids. Great memories too. Cold mornings make me hurt a bit, but I still go and work my claims. Just slower.

im 28, im fit, i kinda also wanna do prospecting for fun but im from germany, every bit of land here has already been thoroughly explored so here you can't really do prospecting well. i'd have to move to other countries that are more suitable for prospecting but idk yet, i first need to find myself a future wife and thats honestly not easy at all

BCIT in Burnaby British Columbia and has an online course in mineral identification and prospecting techniques, but I took the in class courses and a one week field course then got a job with Rich River Explorations 2 months later. Prospecting is just a hobby for me now. I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Jason, that journey was an absolute geological treat! Most people who watch this probably focus on the prospect of gold and that jade you found, but I just wanted to thank you for also capturing the receding glacier and how life is colonizing the slope as soon as the ice is gone. The altered serpentinite was also such a treat with the asbestos you found, beautiful stuff! You must have been so sore after that journey, hope your knee recovers well. Howdy Jason! This is my first comment on your channel. I was a combat field medic and am an emergency room nurse. Your ligaments and tendons stay the same length, but cartilage starts wearing down over time. You have quite an active lifestyle, and from all these comments (I agree with them), you showing us your adventures is awe inspiring and appreciated. You may find for now that pre stretching before a hike or other excursion (after the drive to get there) will quiet that down a bit. It is a prevention step to keep age relates aches away just a bit longer. Love what you're doing. Thanks from the Syracuse, New York area!!!

Major respect for not mentioning the cold water off the glacier. I lived in Alaska for 4 years and my dad was a hunter/fisher wanderer. That water was 32F/0C and your hands didn't jerk when they scooped it up. Joint popping is an early stage of arthritis. If you feel tendons scrapping each other, could be calium deposits. Take off backpack next time you go down steep slope. Safer.

Jason, thank you so much for sharing your incredible journey! I have NO WORDS to describe the beauty and rocks! I've got to take a few minutes until I can get my chin off the floor. The geology is astounding and I've never seen anything like that before. Glacial striations and the changes from one side of the stream to the other is truly a snapshot into time itself. Nature on this planet is in control and is constantly changing its look. The specimens you got are beautiful and will offer amazing gold I'm sure. The jade "chunk" was a trophy that I wanted you to bring down.... However, your safety always comes first! I'm relieved to know that you decided not to try and carry it down. Just think about what could have happened. I will say this though, I thought that renting a helicopter (on a bright day) could reveal a safer, better route to get more specimens in the future. Since I'm an RN, please share the details about your knee popping with your next doctor appointment. I can't diagnose anything but from my own aging self, mine pop more and more with age. Although my doctor has wanted me to get my right knee replaced for several years now. It pops loudly when I'm walking down a hill. It hurts, too. Just take care of yourself, as I pray for your health. Blessings from Alabama ❤️

the outside of the knee popping is usually related to an iliotibial band issue 'popping' over the lateral condyle of the femur ... if it's painful, it's called runner's knee or ITBS Iliotibial band syndrome ... it is something to be aware of, but not overly concerning unless there is pain involved ... if there is any pain on the side or front of the knee (with or without the popping tbh) consult your doctor because that can mean its turning into a bigger issue that you really don't want to deal with and there are things to be done to lessen/prevent it. Take care of yourself, we need you mining for years ;)

Thanks for the info. My knees are just short of 69. and the left one Does that popping often. Sometimes just going down the stairs. Sometimes walking down the sidewalk with the dogs. and it's usually painful for awhile.

Eh. You can get your knees to pop just walking around using them too much. Doctors will usually only do a scan if there are more symptoms, like if it comes with burning pain (then you need to get OFF it and call doc). I had mine popping for the better part of a summer and only was in my 30s, had good insurance so they scanned it just in case the cartilage cuff had a small tear, and it was nothing. Just a symptom of walking around in the fucking mountains with a giant packpack full of rocks.

omg yea! as soon as he found serpentine meeting asbestos bands I was like - DUDE YOURE ON JADE!!! look around more. I'm so stoked he was able to find and show us that boulder.. I have mined and prospected extensively below this formation down around 3k-5k feet and I found endless piles of river cobble jade that are filled with this nickel-gold veining. They cut and polish beautifully and reveal the gold as you clean them up. Thank you Jason!!

It's easy to forget that, while Europe also has beautiful mountains and valleys and forests, you've been exploring, hiking and mapping yours for centuries - we just got here, so much of it's still pretty trackless wilderness. I think we don't appreciate that enough, sometimes.

I'm planning a 7 day prospecting trip in Northern Nevada next year. I will be 44 and at elevations of 4,000 ft to 9,000 + ... I have been doubting my ability because of my age. Jason, I recently tore a disc in my back and herniated a second one, so I strongly suspect that my mountaineering days are behind me. I have family that lives in Bonney Lake, Puyallup, and Graham so they get to see Mt. Rainier every single day. I loved hiking in the mountains near Salt Lake and the high Uinta primitive areas as a Boy Scout, so this video is pure pleasure completely aside from the prospecting (a whole other avocation of mine). Awesome mountain-goating prospecting Jason! Awesome looking glacial rock striations. Always get excited when I come across copper stained rocks/quartz, like a kid finding candy! You can still do it in your 50s like I am (55 yrs) just have a trusty headlamp, and allow more time when descending the slopes to ease the knees. That's what I do, hence leaving my gold prospect and arriving back at my car always at dark. ~Wolfdog~

3:50 I used to work in Banff, when I was much younger :) .. the scenery was just like this .. Part of my job was helping instruct mountaineering, rock climbing and outdoor skills.. it was a great job! Working outside, hiking and camping and climbing :)

That piece of forest you went in to at the start of your hike. It is experience ground creep, that's why those trees are curved like that. One day that entire chunk of earth may slide down in to that valley. The surface is moving downhill and the trees continue to grow straight up, causing that curve. There will be a mass wasting landslide there in the future, maybe it will expose juicy gold LOL

Yup... that sure looks like a giant hunk-o-nephrite. Did the rock itself "ping" when you smacked it to get a sample off of it, or did it go "clonk"? If it pinged, then that's nephrite jade. Depending upon quality and total yield, that's potentially a fair bit of money sitting there. I've never seen a piece that big. If I were you, I'd figure out a way to get it home, even if it took multiple trips to march it down the mountain.

Woohoo! I loooove seeing somebody else bushwhack, brings back fond painful memories! There's this thing called Goretex! I have been using "Geezer Poles" for several years while hiking, they take the weight of your arms off of your legs so you can pack more weight in your pack, they're those collapsing metal poles available everywhere, "RICE" rest, ice compression, elevation. I used to play a lot of volleyball back in my 20's, we were all icing our knees, 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, it takes away the swelling, get the knees above your heart. You can call me the glucosamine/chondrotin kid... sigh getting old isn't the weak of heart... Great job, what beauty you have in your neck of the woods! I'm in the Kittitas Valley, 40 minute drive to find that country from here.

Jason, thanks for the hike and the beautiful scenery. I grew up in the Sierra Nevada but was always just too busy to get out into the Cascades. I realized that age 40 your warranty expires, at age 60 your extended warranty expires. My best friend is Tylenol.

Jason, thank you for sharing your experience and adventure. We live full time at 9400ft 3 6 acre mining claims, 7 shafts, all collapsed, except for 3, very careful with radiation underneath. But can drink stress from the ground in some places. A great video, showcasing the beauty and harsh realities of the alpine and above in the Cascades. Prospecting the alpine and higher is very challenging. The wind driven cold rain is so normal there, the air thins, and the demand on your fitness and calorie needs is high. You are also quite right about the risks. One wrong step can easily injure you or worse. So against the fatigue you must remain very aware. And you were rewarded by finding the source deposits, the best outcome. 50 lbs is a whole lot to pack out in that terrain, not for anyone the least bit out of condition. I have spent hundreds of hours in the high mountains, but on Vancouver Island. I don't think I ever added over 25 lbs to my pack in a miles long hike out. Very similar in the alpine and the same climate zone. A blessing to have been there in the stark beauty of creation.

Back in my 30's I did most of my mountain hiking, my wife kept adding cool rocks to my pack. Knees started popping in my 50's I got a knee brace with the supports on the sides. Worked for me but not hiking in the hills anymore, flatland now that I am in my late 60's my hips pop and 1 or the other hurts daily. Cani bus helps.

Regarding your knees popping out: As we age, our joint tissues can recede. Bone broth is excellent source of collagen (amino acids, antioxidants, minerals) to help rebuild our connective tissues. Pick some good grass fed bones with knuckles (that's where the collagen is), add vegetables and simmer away for 14 hrs or so (plenty of recipes online). I had some re-occurring knee pain recently, drank bone broth daily for about a month and the pain went away. I continue to drink the broth to maintain good health.

Ok Jason, I'm 3 weeks away from my 72nd birthday and still climbing trees with my chainsaw. I have lumps in my lungs, thanks to agent orange exposure in Vietnam. I worked cutting timber on Seagulson ridge, not too far from where you went today. I really enjoyed watching your show but it made me a little nervous, seeing without at least 50 feet of high test rope. That stuff can save you a lot of time, or even your life.

Jason, I really enjoyed this video, your just taught me about LISTENTITE. I have not seen that before. Boy those mountains are sure rugged. It did surprise me a little if your prospecting that you did not have a gold pan, and you were not panning any samples along the creek. Any time you want you can go prospecting with me. I loved this video!

Ok, as someone who has spent a lot of time in the mountains, Jason, I'm going to suggest that what looks to be a cotton canvas Carhart jacket may not be the best choice for the weather up there. You really should have something more water repellant like a gore-tex jacket. My recommendation would be a waterproof softshell as they are more durable to abrasion. Cotton jackets can get soaked and you could get hypothermia pretty quickly. Really cool explore! A lot of effort but you found the source.

A tip is to have a pair of trekking poles with you, especially for the descents. Takes the worst load off the knees. Thank you for an extraordinary hike. It reminds me of hiking in the Himalayas, I recognize the loss of scale in these giant landscapes!

Knee popping? Should have it checked for a possible meniscus problem. I'm a retired miner, and a twist of my leg tore mine. A simple tear can be scoped, and the recovery is pretty quick. Knee replacement will take longer, which is what I ended up having. Love the area you are exploring!!
