It's time to give our school room/ family office a makeover! In this House To Home episode I'm flying solo while Weston is out of town. I've got just a few days to TRANSFORM this 90s-Style breakfast nook into the Homeschool room we've been dreaming about! I'm sharing a DIY wall treatment, a scratch-made open shelving build as well as setting up a computer desk.

Love how it turned out! With everything being white a black desk is a good accent and indeed easier to clean. I think the bulletin board looks much better on the side of the cabinets :) Good choice.

Now I’m 22 and have two babies of my own (who aren’t twins but they’re only a year apart so it feels like they are sometimes 😅) and absolutely love watching your videos for inspiration when keeping my house and taking care of our space. Natalie the school Room looks fantastic. Love the desk going up and down. Where do the children do the writing ? I didn’t see a table. Only thing I would say I’d say is please put some art work at child height. Looking up at art is annoying when your only young.

You need a small 4 person table and chairs in the center of the room (not a kids set) for the children to color and paint And a rug under it will cozy it up.

One tip for the monitor: Try to have it facing the kids directly (maybe it was only angled for the after shot?) At one of our recent teacher-safety training sessions we were reminded that it is better to have the norm be straight on instead of twisted/angled. (I don't think that made a lot of sense..hopefully the example will?) e.g. If you work on the computrer a lot, have the monitor, keyboard front and center so that you aren't constantly in a swiveled/pivoted position. It's a lot easier on joints/muscles, etc. to have symmetrical and not asymmetrial positioning. Hope that makes sense. 💜Thanks for a fun video! Looks great!

Great work on your project. I agree with the draws being in the corner. Was wondering, Where do they do their schoolwork ? Dinning room table? I would add a rectangular table and chairs in your open space, in front of your pretty window. I think it would make the room be cozy, looking out especially when it snows. What’s your thought on that idea. Love your old books and wholesome story, very sweet.

Watching from Michigan and was wondering if there are any non teacher certified moms/dads out there homeschooling and the pros and cons. It’s something I’m considering with my youngest. I’m hesitating because the last time I tried to teach a subject was I was trying to tutor a friend and we both agreed I failed miserably. I’ve done a little research on where I live but still not sure.

The school room looks awesome!! I think you did a great job on the wall! Stacking the ikea units seems to save a bunch of space and was a good choice (I would recommend anchoring them to the wall though for safety). Can’t wait to see how you grow into this school room over the next few years!

If you don’t like the cabinets, I’d suggest wrapping the outside in a wood and staining to match the shelves so they look like one piece and something slightly mor elevated but still practical?

Yes! That would be a great idea. This is probably not sticking around for more than this school year because of our plans for custom storage and library shelves/window seat! We're just using what we have for now!

Visually, I think it would make more sense, but that drawer is used for things that only I as the adult/teacher access so it’s on the top to allow easy access for the kids’ sets of drawers to be on the bottom.

First grade is when we're more serious about sitting together at the table 3-4 days a week to do book work and regular lessons. Before that it's more freeform and child-lead!

It looks very much like something from the past the way you put it together. Could you please tell me what model of printer you have?
