When people mistake hornets for the Germanic common wasp. No seriously, people do often mistake them, due to the roundness and similarities. Though more like a fatter European Paper Wasp really. But they're pretty docile. It's the common fucks that sting without provocation, just because you "were in it's way". Have literally ran into a flying Hornet by accident, where we both turned around straight after as if to say "sorry".

As said, unless the bee leaves the barb; at which point pulls their intestines out. Which they don't do after being smoked. I'm not experienced at retrieving swarming bees; definitely not a case like this. Mom did have a hive swarm ony a few feet away on a low branch. Inspection reveals when they are producing drones & potential new queen, these will be found on edge of brood chamber. Add new brood super. Bee experts put in queen barrier. But, older bees that take care of the queen refuse to use the outer 2-3 frames of intended (by persons). Move honey super to below queen barrier for winter. Then cover to avoid wood rot.

I’m a new beek, started keeping bees from catching a swarm in a friends fruit trees. Loved this video. Never had an appreciation for any type of insect, or cared if I killed them, until I learned how important pollinators are to the environment. Now, I treat my bees with the best care and it kills me to crush one doing inspections.

@mastermindhunter
@mastermindhunter 5 лет назад
Exactly. They’re also barbed, and those barbs are what hooks it against our flesh. Since most bee threats are other insects, their stingers won’t get sunk into a hard exoskeleton, and it wouldn’t be as fatal.
@SuperSpells
@SuperSpells 5 лет назад
Yeah, they specifically stick into our skin/mammal skin, because it's elastic and soft, hence why the grew barbs for bears. Only the Queen doesn't have barbs. They can sting other insects repeatedly and kill them no problem. The sack of flesh they leave behind specifically is the venom gland and the muscles to pump it, along with their intestines, but they fatally injure themselves in the process of leaving that behind.

In all reality the Bees actually need to be fed in order to start producing a new hive. It is also the best way to feed them until they can become acclimated to there new hive. When you do a hive split because you found a swarm brood (basically you notice a new queen bee egg) and you want to prevent a swarm. You will take a good portion of the old hive's cone to implant into the new hive to give them some larva eggs as well as food to aid in growth.

Such beautiful comb. For the detractors below, these bees would be decimated by the destruction of the building so for the bees it is a survival event. The beekeeper remarked that in the tropics they have natural feed all year and this honey is overproduction for the hive needs. The amount of honey dripping from the ceiling alone had me on edge..... Lol!! Maybe have some sort of drip collector on hand to catch even more. I know they had to take the hive and all but the comment about bees being a good example to humans made me think what a fascinating snapshot this was. The bee colony doing what they do working, building, storing, etc. Humans doing what they do, destroying, hoarding, wasting, consuming. At least they were able to save some of it and get use of what would otherwise have been lost to demolition. It was an impressive hive. The biggest I have ever seen. Thank you for the video.

He literally answered the question.... He says the use of smoke mimics a forest fire. Thus the bees gorge on the honey to prepare themselves for having to fly away and build a new nest in the event that their home burns to the ground. The smoke basically triggers them to feed so that they can conserve enough energy to rebuild their home in another area.

My answer to "why did bees evolve to die when they sting you" would be multifaceted. I haven't researched any of this but I thought it might be fun to just guess. Firstly, the stinger likely formed originally from some bit of carapace material, or even an orifice or vestigial organ, which caused it to be attached to other vulnerable innards in a way that isn't easily or safely severed. Second, evolution doesn't have an end goal in mind. Nothing in nature or in the bee thinks "it would be better if losing the stinger didn't kill us, let's work towards that." Evolution is blind and is very rarely a perfectionist. The stinger characteristic only stuck around because it provided an advantage over what was there before and the bees who had it were able to more successfully pass on their genetic makeup and/or outcompete. It's possible that eventually, with a lot more time, even better defense mechanism woul evolve over millions of generations or more. But for now, even though it kills the bee, as far as evolution is concerned, the trait works good enough. Lastly, again evolution is most often a very slow process of feeling around in the dark, and making small bits of progress through trial and error. For the stinger not to kill the bee, it would mean the bee has something to do after it stings once. Probably the most reasonable approach would be the stinger just doesn't fall out, since it would require a reshaping of the stinger and significant strengthening of the carapace. Not too much to handle there. Another solution might be that the bee loses the stinger but it doesn't die. In that case, it can't contribute to the hive nearly as well without it's main defense weaponry. It would ideally either regrow its stinger, or maybe develop a new job for the hive. In both cases, it's possible that it's just not worth the resources to the hive when you can just grow all new offspring. Also, both of these would be massive undertakings for evolution. Changing a part of one trait is one thing, creating an entirely new one is another. Many ants, for example, have different morphs for different jobs. Some have even separate workers and fighters, where the fighters are massive with huge mandibles and the workers are much smaller. Again though, this would fundamentally change the nature of the beehive's operation and logistics. Even I have a problem seeing any of this happening since again evolution cares about what works, and only refines a creature when there is a reason to in the environment. TLDR: Bees don't survive when they lose their stingers because they don't need to.
@fallenstar780
@fallenstar780 3 года назад
I've done lots of research on bees (although im not retaining all of it this instant)! From what i can recall, worker stingers are a modified ovipositor (not sure about queen stingers since they still have their ovipositor im p sure). This means that its still attached pretty solidly to their insides. Their stingers arent actually supposed to come out, though! They were designed for killing other arthropods, in which case the stinging bee would be unharmed (young queens kill each other when the hive needs to raise a new one). However, we mammals have thick skin, and when the stingers slide in, they get stuck. Thats why that bee there was struggling to get away- it probably doesmt even know (as much as a bee *can* know at least) that itll die. But youre right about why its lasted; there was never a pressure to lose the trait, since the hive can crank out more bees easily. Plus those workers arent the ones reproducing (the drones just leave, idk if they even have stingers since theyre male and wouldnt have had ovipositors to begin with), so their natural selection is a bit different.
@Doxymeister
@Doxymeister 3 года назад
@@fallenstar780 Just an addendum: the drones will hang around the hive as long as the workers let them--they're otherwise useless--all they do is eat, and they don't forage or build comb. UNTIL...not entirely sure how they know, but when a young queen from another hive goes out on her mating flight, the drones will swarm out of the hives in the immediate area, gathering in "drone assemblages" to get a chance at mating with a virgin queen. Also, during the mating flight of the queen, many males will mate with her, in which process the male loses it's "stinger" and dies just like a worker that stings will. An older queen, or a queen that was incompletely fertilized might begin to lay unfertilized eggs, which then develop into lots and lots of drones. Beekeepers will usually destroy an old queen, incompletely mated or even virgin queens that just start laying willy-nilly, because too many drones will cause the hive to die out--no new worker bees are being born.

First off, that is the biggest hive that I have ever seen. Second, what I am taking away from this video is nothing that was in the video. Rather, I am taking away the apparent fact that vegans are, possibly, the most critical group of people that I have had the misfortune to know. Fortunately I don't really know any of you. You criticize a fellow vegan for filming bee keeping. You criticize the beekeeper for "stealing" the honey. OMG is there anything that you don't criticize? I'm tempted to tell you to eat some real food; that way you won't be so bitc... Err, so ornery, but I shall resist that temptation. As for taking all the honey... if you leave it behind, it will attract more bees (that may set up another hive right there), it may attract other bugs (like cockroaches). The reasons for not leaving the comb behind are numerous. And so are the reasons for not killing the bees. On the lighter side, if anyone is worried about all the honey that dripped all over the place, don't. The bees will pick it up and use it in a new hive. They will clean the honey up to where you would never know that there had been any spilled. Other than that, good video. A lot of good info. And I, for one, am glad to see that you didn't let your being vegan stop you from doing this video and broadening your knowledge. Kind of like me, I'm not vegan, but I try to learn about their lifestyle (for understanding). Keep up the good work.

I couldn't agree more, so many self righteous mamas boys and girl. Gonna sit here and cry about someone "taking" the bees honey, get over yourselves you ungrateful pricks. I mean I don't eat meat, but I'm not gonna sit here and try to chastise someone else because of their life choices. What right do I or you have to try to impose your will or belief system on someone else. Worry about yourself, if you don't like what he is doing leave a thumbs down, and a respectful comment explaining your why you don't think the video was good, but don't sit here and try to chastise this man, that is uncalled for. First of all, our bodies are designed to eat meat, granted we get more benefits out of eating raw meat than cooked meat, but certain raw meats can be dangerous for us which is why we cook meats. I don't eat meat because I have seen how the animals are treated in the slaughter houses and honestly it just sickens me and hurts to know we treat other beings in this manor, but I'm not gonna tell the next man or woman they can't. That is not my decision to make, I have no right nor authority to tell someone what they can or can't do/eat. Some people are just self righteous pieces of shit....Period!!!
