the square part runs thro and holds everything in position,if glue is applied i don't think you can dismantle easily no of surfaces are in contact

If the horizontals will not be carrying any significant load other than their own weight, and are supported at both ends (so no significant bending moment), it should work just fine. There's plenty of other joints that can be used if higher strength is needed for a specific application.
