EXTREME KONMARI METHOD DECLUTTERING | Before & After

I never thought cleaning my room would change my life, but here I am a new person all thanks to a few days of extreme bedroom decluttering inspired by Tidying Up with Marie Kondo and her KonMari Method. Lou and I spent a few days organizing, cleaning and decluttering my childhood bedroom from clothes and closets to books and boxes of sentimental items. I can truly attest to the life-changing magic of the KonMari Method. We purged my closet of over a decade worth of clutter and were able to minimize my possessions to just those that spark joy. A friend of mine joked that we are the only people who live in a van that are also secret hoarders, but after finishing this cleaning process I can proudly say that is no longer true! This process helped us to reach the minimal lifestyle that we aspire to embody and I truly feel a million pounds lighter knowing that I actually have a bedroom and not a storage unit waiting for me at my parents' house. We hope you enjoy this one! Let us know about your own cleaning projects below! Is anyone else newly obsessed with decluttering?

Here is a blog post I wrote about the whole process!

Me! And just watching it is exhausting me. I would just end up with all that clutter on the bed and nowhere to sleep because I sure wouldn't be able to deal with it all in one day. The trouble is when you get older you realise that you're never going to need all the stuff you've accumulated over decades and are just going to leave a whole lot of stuff that your kids won't want and will have to clear out when you're gone. I just regret not getting rid when I was younger and able to haul it all downstairs and out to the car for disposal. Plus in this COVID pandemic it's not that easy to dispose of it cos the charity shops are backlogged as they have to quarantine everything and some of my clothes still have the price tags on so too good to put in the public recycle bins. Now I'm having a panic attack just thinking about it all ...lol. Just close the door on it all (even if it does mean leaning on it to get it shut) and go and binge watch something on Netflix 😁

Tips: Does it belong in your future? So watching Marie Kondo's show, I tried to do the home the same way. I got to sentimental and had a ton of crap still lying around in my joy pile. I remember her saying "Does it spark joy?". These things spark some joy, but mostly I wanted to keep it because of the memories. I then went back through the maybe pile and used "Does this belong in your future?" The answer was shocking for many items, even though it had a past- it did not belong in my future. This made it easier to release. Also, a few items that I was unsure of I sat aside and came back to it on a different day. I felt differently as I had not overwhelmed myself with a bombardment of sentimental feelings. I took lots of digital pictures and small videos of things that I wanted to remember, but not stash. I have a flash drive instead of a huge amount of tubs with papers, pictures etc in them. Highly recommend using the "future" method if you are having troubles.

That is a good mantra to use! I will try that. Because there are items that do spark joy, and yet do not belong in my future! So, the joy the item gave me in the past is acknowledged, and the way I see my future helps guide the decision. I am thinking of books that I loved, but because of my eyesight I am not really able to read books like I used to. You really helped. Thank you.

Starting at 3:30 I have to give her ABSOLUTE PROPS for that entire next minute, because that emotional arc is pretty much what EACH OF US GO THROUGH WITH EACH PIECE that tugs at our heartstrings. It was SUCH A HUMAN, AUTHENTIC MOMENT. It was so gratifying for her to acknowledge that she didn't even know she had it, hadn't seen it for 10 years, and didn't need to possess it for the rest of her life for the 30 seconds of nostalgia it brought her. Wow, THAT MINUTE is the CRUX OF ALL OF IT. What really touched me was that tender moment where she realized she didn't need it, yet thought to thank it for triggering the memories, and then send it on it's way. Wow. That entire moment resonated with me SO POWERFULLY. Respect for this video to see how THEORY can be applied to our clutter, our memories, and our LIVES.

I agree! That's always the biggest reason that stops me from continuing to declutter... I wasn't strong enough to say goodbye even though I knew I didn't need it anymore... So I'd just pretend like I never started to avoid those decisions. 😭 So yes! BIG props to her final decision and dedication to continue and not give up! 🥰
@abbynormal4740
@abbynormal4740 Год назад
💯 Respect for finding the strength to let go. It's especially emotionally difficult to discard stuff that came to you from a loved one who's now departed. (Guilty here - heck, I still have mementos of Mom & Dad and their parents going back up to 80+ years ago, to the mini cassette with Dad's last voicemail to me and the candy roses that Mom planned to put on my last birthday cake before she passed, but ended up in the hospital without having a chance to make it. They've been gone nearly 20 years and I'm just now starting to think about starting to thin out their stuff - meanwhile my cousin keeps sending boxes of cards and letter she finds at our grandparents' farmhouse that Grandma and Grandpa got from Mom and Dad! 🤷 One hint from an AARP decluttering webinar (iirc) is to take pictures of sentimental items that spark special memories but have no other reason to be kept. You might think you can maintain the memories without the item, especially when you're younger. But memories can fade or disappear with time and/or declining mental acuity - e.g., even the poster had forgotten about having her special sweatshirt. 🙂 (Seems like a good time to take that advice myself 😉😄). Best of success to you all on your own decluttering efforts! 😀

I struggle with this too but strive to reach a place whereby I can donate and have especially when it might help someone else. Some clothes might have stressful or sad or disappointing memories too and sometimes can let go of those too. I need to do this myself soon with some clothes, knick knacks and maybe some books and other misc items. Next time I move I want to be more organized and decluttered.

I was at a complete loss as to why she let go of her soccer jersey. It obviously sparks joy and a lot of memories. I have such a problem with people that are able to throw away these beautiful memorabilia. You can always re-purposed them and keep enjoying them. I don’t know how we’ve gotten to this place where it’s some kind of a “strength” to be able to kill the things that made us who we are.
@NazraT1704
@NazraT1704 Год назад
@@foranniesthis is such a strange thing to take away from that moment. She even said “I didn’t even know I still had this. The memories are in my head” You don’t need to keep a soccer jersey to relive the memories, and if it’s been under her bed for 10 years it might as well have already been gone. The whole point is that THINGS don’t make us who we are. It’s the experiences and the memories that shape us I have such a problem with people that judge others for living their lives, and dealing with their things, in a different way. She’s obviously happy with her decision and explained as much in the video, so I’m not sure why you just assume it’s actually the opposite

Here's a very good tip when getting rid of clothes: ALWAYS CHECK THE POCKETS! I was sorting out clothes and threw a pair of shorts in the donate box. After a while, I remembered I should check the pockets, even though I was pretty sure there wasn't anything in there. I found my very special rainbow string trick string that I wore on my wrist everywhere I went for 8 years. I got it from my aunt and I taught my close friends and siblings string tricks with it. I almost lost it forever! Also, one time I found a $20 bill in some pants at the thrift store. Always check the pockets!!

One day I put on a jacket that I swiped from her give away pile...wallah, I found her rings in the pocket! Glad you found your trick string:-) Oh, and a good idea to check pockets before you wash your clothes too...yesterday my husband washed his keys! Thankfully his was the one without the key fob! This video was so inspiring, and peaceful. I LOVE the color change too...my daughter found that sunny yellow is her happy color...I am sending this to her to watch!

I now have a huge google drive folder of images of toys and places from when I was little. Most of them are stock images but they still spark so many memories. It is easier (but not easy) to me to give away childhood toys.

I am so impressed with the results of this declutter. It's absolutely amazing, and I think it's nice hearing your reasoning for what to keep and not, especially when it comes to sentimental items. I think sometimes we can get hung up on an item being sentimental, but forgetting that even though it's sentimental, we maybe don't need to keep ALL of those items. I find that those few items I've decided to keep after my grandmothers are much more precious to me than if I would have kept everything I could have kept. This is also the one KonMari video I come back to again and again, because I think it's such a good representation of the method.

I purged, donated, or tossed everything. The important stuff was given away over the last few years. Now I have practically nothing. The lesson learned is get rid of more stuff as you go. Buy less. Keep less. Don’t bother hauling it from state to state, home to home, and storage locker to storage locker. It feels great and my kids are going to be burdened.

Cluttered room, cluttered house, cluttered car, cluttered mind blocking the path to a peaceful and disciplined life. In our house it was friends and family giving the kids stuff, more stuff than was good for anyone never mind a little kid. I used to quietly put a lot of it in the attic unopened, beg aunts and grandparents to limit it and suggest events rather than things but they couldn’t help themselves. Take a walk with your grandkids, bake cookies with them but stop buying them stuff. Thanks.

I can relate to this a lot. My mom used to trash drive and do yard sales to make extra money. So everytime my kids would go to her house she would give them so much stuff. I see that with my mom, my sister and my brother’s mother-in-law.. people buy so many things that are not needed at all. If I ever had kids, I would buy them what they need - if you want to give them something, you can send money on the separate accounts for their future, so they can have easier start. For some reason it’s a big taboo in here to give money - why? It’s the easiest thing to do

People often misinterpret Marie’s method of saying goodbye to things. You may have many things that have no use to you or have no value, but her method doesn’t place a value on items. Her method puts forth the question to oneself, Does the item spark joy or not? If it’s a shirt that is from a certain time that you could never bear to part from, then keep it, it’s obviously very special if you remember it so specifically. Don’t get rid of things you love, but just remember that memories are forever. If you have gotten all the joy you needed from the item then it’s time to let it go.
@WildWeRoam

thank you for this comment Fabian. I completely agree the part in the video where I get rid of it was early in my KonMari-ing experience. As i progressed, i definitely realized i didn't need the jacket and so many other things. i kept one sweatshirt from my soccer days and one tshirt and that felt like more than enough when i still have lots of photos. Thanks for taking the time to go through her method in detail. i just got her book on my kindle and i'm really excited to read it and learn more! -- Dana

Fabian my bras most definitely DON’T “spark joy”. Does that wacko say I should get rid of them?
@fabianbladez123
@fabianbladez123 5 лет назад
kathryn witte I’m sensing some hostility. Her book and ideology about cleaning and organizing seems to have upset you for some odd reason. But if you read her book, her method doesn’t place any value on items. Bras may seem boring but they can spark joy if they are comfortable for you or if they are your favorite. Sparking joy doesn’t mean each item is amazing, the term spark joy essentially boils down to if you truly need said item in your life or not, otherwise if the item doesn’t spark joy or have any actual purpose to you anymore then get rid of it. It’s pretty simple.
@kathrynwitte3398
@kathrynwitte3398 5 лет назад
Fabian try to psychoanalyze me all you like but your initial premise is flawed. I have no interest in buying her book, just in pointing out that this "method" is the mumbo-jumbo new age fad of the moment and is unworkable in real life. That being said, you didn't answer me about if I should thank my bras and send them on their way because they don't bring me joy. But that doesn't fit in with your black and white narrative. Good luck with that.
@fabianbladez123
@fabianbladez123 5 лет назад
kathryn witte kathryn witte Why are you upset about this method it’s pretty simple. You don’t want something anymore, get rid of it. A lot of this is common sense. Saying goodbye to clothing is essentially just remembering that all objects had worth at some point and to not simply throw things away with abandon, or buy things you don’t need with abandon. This method is to help people who don’t have any organizational skills. No ones forcing you to use her way of organizing so why are you so mad in the first place. Something as basic as underwear is a necessity, but many have pairs they don’t like or use, yet still keep. Getting rid of the ones that don’t “spark joy” and keeping the ones you actually really like is the entire method, simple as that.

I recommend starting with a small place like a kitchen drawer or shelves, and once you get th pleasure of seeing the results it will keep you going for the rest of the house. 😊

I loved watching this again. I was so afraid to go after my dream of van life as well as just tired of avoiding growth and handling my responsibilities. I get told by people who love me that it's ok to be afraid and to not give up on my dreams and what i really want. Somethibg brought me back to this video and I want to do it . Thanks for inspiring me again. I know I have a lot of decluttering to do but this time I'm looking forward to it.

Here's the dope shit tho...you can just look at this video and use this as the memories after you throw those things out. Videos don't take up space in your house, you can pull up the memory from virtually anywhere, your eventual kids can watch this video and see your reactions and joy to the things you eventually threw out and...unless the youtube servers blow up, it'll be here forever.

Yep. I was going to comment something similar. For papers and old school projects that my mom had saved of mine and my sister's I took photos of the things that I thought were cute or sparked a memory of making it. Then I tossed it all out.

3:27 was really helpful! We do not need a physical item sitting in a box somewhere to keep the memories. So many things we don't even know we have and would never miss if we didn't come across them.

Seeing you love your jacket yet go through the process of letting it go was so special. Many people who have decluttering videos aren’t sentimental- they easily throw things away. It was great to see your process - that it’s ok to be sentimental and still let things go. Thank you for that. 💕

All I can think about is why do we have all this stuff in the first place and when we make it 'disappear' from our lives it's now all just moved conveniently out of our view but it still exists somewhere on our planet. The amount of resources used to produce and discard this stuff makes my head spin but I'm so happy to see people becoming more aware and mindful about our collective out-of-control consumption habits that we feel entitled to.

I agree, konmari is a fantastic lesson in mindfulness and awareness and it’s shocking how much I at least got rid of, made me guilty about the money wasted and the waste of the items environmentally, even though most was donated. I wonder if her show has had an impact on local municipalities and donor stores worldwide, if enough people have followed suit?!

Your de-cluttering video actually tells a great story about the emotional aspect of de-cluttering and how difficult letting go of some items that held a treasured place in a person's history can be. I adored how you said that the things, themselves, were not as important because the memory of why they are important lives in your mind already. GREAT video! Best Wishes ~ Rachel

Your video inspired me to go home and declutter one part of my room with my husband and it took 2 hours! That's it! We have more sections to do and we are doing a little each night. I did this to my room a few years ago when I was about 15 because I wanted to redo my bedroom. My parents had kind of always just thrown random, worn out, unmatching furniture and decor into my room since I was a baby and it was filled with old toys so I wanted a makeover. I had been very depressed as a child and young teenager because of issues with my parents so when I decluttered and got rid of all my old toys and furniture it just was a huge relief. I've also been much more organized and somewhat minimalist since then. It wasn't so sad as it was happy because I was getting rid of objects that made me upset, not sentimental. I can't imagine the strength you must have to get rid of things that give you happy memories. I'm thinking of doing a slight declutter again soon because my room has gotten a little too busy for my tastes and so I'm trying to emotionally prepare for it. I feel much more inspired now having watched you.

I agree with whoever said that taking a picture of some sentimental items helped them. I might also recommend writing about sentimental items, as that helped me when I had to go through my deceased father's possessions which were extremely sentimental for me. He had a cologne collection and I had no intention of wearing his colognes or giving them to my fiancé, so I wrote down the names of them so that if I want to smell them again, I can just find a tester or sample at a store.

As she said "all the memories are in my head" i bet if you try it it could be easier to declutter

I really love how you guys transformed your place! Congratulations. I am Japanese and I read Marie's book a long time ago. Now her method has impacted all over the world. To be honest I am very surprised that people understand the way she told us how to appreciate our material belongings so deeply because it is very common in Japan and I thought it might be a too Japanese thing. Parents tell you to take care of and thank our material belongings when you are little. We believe that there's a spirit inside each material thing. Now I can see my culture and background from a different perspective which is very nice. Thank YOU for the video for reminding me of our beautiful culture💗
