Once had a boarder with a team of blue mules, most reliable and bombproof animals I have ever seen. Tough as nails, and loyal. If they thought they could do it, they did, and did it perfectly. They could jump a fence from a standstill, and kept trespassers of any kind, human or animal, off the property. Rode like a dream, incredible endurance, easy keepers, and could pull anything you could hitch them to.

I have two mules. A Warmblood cross John (17.3hh) "Doug" And a Hanvoarian Molly (15hh) "Skyler" Both show mules! A few shows we cleaned out! We jump, dressage, run barrels, trail, mule race, rope, pen, sort, drive, you name it! I love my mules to death, and though they can be a bit of a challenge, they are sure worth the shot and after owning and riding many horses, i have to say my mules are my favorate.

Just a small bit of history. Col. Richard Irving Dodge was an army surgeon after the civil war,Wrote a very interesting book called "33 years on the plains" He was at the southern Black Hills at camp Jenny quite awhile before Custer's expedition and there is a marker at that site about 50 miles from where I live. Any way He always rode a mule.

It really is amazing how someone can come on here, comfortably hidden behind a computer screen and judge others and what they do. It's amazing to me that they will sit here and tell us how stupid we are when they don't even know how to say what they're thinking without using the wrong version of "you're" which should have been learned in like 3rd grade. Mrsangelcakes has probably never ridden a horse in her life. Thank you Slaughter for being on my side and for enjoying the videos I've made :)

MULES are a great animal to ride and historically never received the fame they earned. Prior to quarter horses most working horses were mustangs or wild horses or thoroubreds..agile and fast but not strong with endurance. Working cattle required multiple horses and light weight. MULES could go for days and carry a heavier load. Several Arizona Rangers including Capt. Tom Ryning rode a mule to makes rounds across Az. sure footed and stable. A very good ride.

@ThePippers Mules are more sure footed and better in the rocks and on slick surfaces. They get it from the donkey and they dont require shoes. But horses can learn and do this stuff as well it's just more dangerous. I have ridden with several very good horses it just kind of depends on their experience and temperment i guess.

Making a mule do something dangerous to its self-preservation is impossible. Do alittle research. Also do alittle research on the muscle conformation and stength. Mules are 4 wheel drive, horses 2.

All of these pictures were taken on location wherever we were riding and whatever we were jumping off. I have never been in a rodeo and just because you can't do it doesn't mean it can't be done. Mules donkeys whatever they are. It is uncomfortable for an animal no matter if horse or donkey or mule if you jump with a deep seat. Trained or used to it or not. That's NOT how you jump anything bigger than a cross rail. That's what cross rails are generally for. Teacher riders how to be in the correct position without being in danger of ruining the animals back because they don't know how to properly do it.

I love Mules, they are forgotten by todays history but they were a large part in western development, maybe even more than the horse. If you research history many people rode mules, not horses just for these reasons. The only real thing a horse is better at is cow work. For riding and endurance and especially surefootedness a mule is the way to go.
@pinz2022

MrAzrancher Sir, is there any truth to that legend about Kit Carson's exploits in the Great Southwest about mules being able to "smell water" at great distances?
@MrAzrancher
@MrAzrancher 9 лет назад
pinz2022 I have heard these sroties all of my life as well, not just with Carson but from older cowboys from when I was just a kid. I have no factual information to validate them but in my own experience I have seen horses/mules and even cattle sniff the air and travel directly to a water source over several miles. Today I use strategically placed stock tanks in area's with no natural water because regardless of where I release livestock on the ranch I will find them later near a stock tank which makes checking them or herding them in a lot easier. So I myself believe their is a lot of truth to these old stories.

@calamityjean1525

MrAzrancher said: "The only real thing a horse is better at is cow work." I dunno about that. I saw a video of a mule working cattle. They ran up on a cow & calf, and the rider jumped off and tackled the calf. I'm not sure what the rider was doing with the calf, because I was so fascinated by the mule. It was keeping the cow from attacking the dismounted rider by kicking her with it's back feet. It kicked her repeatedly, swinging around to keep it's rump aimed right at her. Then the rider finished with the calf and released it, it ran off with the cow following, and the rider got back on the mule.

Some people don't get to buy any kind of saddle you can get. And in my opinion I think a western saddle is safer. You fall off to easy with an English saddle bc of no horn or leg protection. Plus if your someone like me and live in the mountainous area around.. WEST VIRGINIA ! Then most of the time a western saddle is better for the trail type riding. Yes I jump horses over logs ,creeks, etc. it's not my fault if its there so if I wanna jump with western saddle I freakin will its my decision not
@ExtremeMules
@ExtremeMules 13 лет назад
@jfhorses The reason you would never ask yours to do this is because you are scared. And you just said it, I ASK my mules to do this and if they cant or don't want to, they don't. They do it on their own. There is nothing cruel about it. We have all been riding for a long time and we know their limits and don't push them past their limits. They enjoy getting out and they enjoy being in the rocks. But hey you have a right to your opinion and i'm sorry you feel that way.

Hello! I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond. We have definitely had mules that are that tall. All of these mules are different sizes, kinds, backgrounds, and owners. I am 5 feet tall and I had a mule that would do these things that I could use his shoulder as an armrest. His name was Pee Wee. Obviously you wouldn't jump Pee Wee off the same stuff you might jump your 16 hand mule off of. You just have to be aware of their size and don't push them to do something that would hurt them.
@ExtremeMules
@ExtremeMules 13 лет назад
@panic6992 And in reference to him being scared of people, you just have to work with them. Pete, the little gray mule that you see in a lot of these pics was headed to the dog food factory when he was bought for $100 and rescued by one of the guys we ride with. He worked with Pete a lot and got him turned around before he sold him to us. He'd been abused when he was young and he was terrified of everything. He is a very sweet animal and we just worked with him and gave him love.
@ExtremeMules
@ExtremeMules 11 лет назад
Every mule in this video did do all of these things and more. If you didn't notice, I have over 500,000 views. That kind of makes these mules "famous." Apparently you know nothing about mules and even if you do, you know nothing about mine. "You'll almost put money on it" Well you'd lose your money then my friend.
@ExtremeMules
@ExtremeMules 12 лет назад
Obviously you haven't tried it then. We have been doing this a very long time. Some mules are better than others. Just because you haven't/can't do something that doesn't mean that it is fake. Have you ever driven a race car? Been to the moon? Wrestled an alligator? Probably not. That doesn't mean those things are fake.
@ExtremeMules
@ExtremeMules 12 лет назад
@psychobunny32 Mules get surefootedness from the donkey side. Also they get the "Stubborn" part from the donkey. But they're actually not stubborn like everyone thinks. They just analyze every situation and form an opinion about it on their own. if they don't think its safe they wont do it. Unlike a horse who goes where you point it.
@ExtremeMules
@ExtremeMules 13 лет назад
@MariaLovesTheJoBros No the principles are the same. you're still trying to help create balance between you and them and make it easier for them to jump. If you leaned back while they were jumping up that would make it harder for them because you'd be pulling back and throwing them more off balance. When they're going up you lean forward. When they're going down lean back.
@ExtremeMules
@ExtremeMules 15 лет назад
If you haven't ever done it before dont do it. or start small. a smart rider wouldn't try something they didn't know how to do or didn't know if their animal could handle. i wouldn't recommend it with horses especially in the rocks. i have ridden with some amazing horses but they had special shoes for more traction and were used to this kind of riding.
@ExtremeMules
@ExtremeMules 11 лет назад
Also mules are built for the rocks. Have you never seen the natural habitat of wild burros (aka donkeys)? They live in this type of terrain. Mule = Half donkey. So they are extremely comfortable here. If you would "Never take any large animal on a cliff terrain" you don't know much about mules.
@ImmortalSynn
@ImmortalSynn 14 лет назад
Uh, no... despite your ridiculous belief, "all" English riders do not think that way at all. Heck, most of us with any experience knows that the best way to keep a jumper (or even hunter) fresh and engaged is to slap a western saddle on 'em and take them out on the trail. Try again.
@ExtremeMules
@ExtremeMules 15 лет назад
Every mule and rider that we ride with are experienced in this type of riding. We never force our mules to do something they can't. for example we never make a small mule jump off of a great big jump. We dont even have to push them. We just point them and they go. They don't even hesitate.
@ExtremeMules
@ExtremeMules 12 лет назад
@davidgrgic They get all kinds of good traits from the Donkey. Sure Footedness, Stamina, Power, Intelligence. Generally speaking a mule can last longer and carry more weight than a horse of comparable size. Plus I've had mules almost all my life.
@ExtremeMules
@ExtremeMules 12 лет назад
@foiran They get the sure footedness and the analyzing from the donkey. I have ridden with great horses that do all this stuff. But generally speaking mules are better equipped to do some of these things.
