In isolation, the compression sounds way OTT, but when mixed in with the unprocessed signal it introduces so much more energy and drives the groove along. Brilliant stuff.

The attack and release is so crucial that having just a few options for them just doesn't cut it. There is always a very specific sweet spot

That core of energy is an increase in the RMS values of the levels not just the peaks. In other words it has a lot more strength. You can see this when zoomed out on a track wave form before an after the -6 DB or -12 DB areas will be more full visually. I know DR Mix knows this (all proper mastering engineers do) but for the youtube viewers.

I watch Doctor Mix a lot for a pretty long time. When I need to mix and master something down with my ass-arms and my 1.5 of ears I'm starting to review my knowledge and rewatch Doctor Mix. So, I get parallel compression a lot, in details, in a long run, it works out and it makes sense. But in the comparison with simply using maximizer, how do you make sure that you don't have clips with parallel compression? By simply going through the whole piece and compensating with master vol?

Can anyone tell me what version of Cubase is this, please?
@marekraczycki2762
@marekraczycki2762 5 лет назад
So when you need that paralell comp. Kick in mix you just record it that way and than you setting the parallel on snare and another rec? I dont understand this. Or you have a few compressors?
@nate_creates
@nate_creates 5 лет назад
Marek Raczycki Yes, that’s what he’s doing. When you record the track through a hardware insert it’s often called “printing” the audio. After recording the kick through the compressor, then you move on to the snare, OH, etc.

Hey whats up Doc! I have used this NYC technique myself but i cant figure out why it doesn't cause phasing issues. Same fundamental frequencies with added harmonics if you colour while you compress so then why dont they cancel each other out ....
@Doctormix
@Doctormix 6 лет назад
nope! because a good DAW maintains the correct phase ;)
@N1K5TA
@N1K5TA 6 лет назад
Doctor Mix ha ha very good but why is it selective then and I get phasing issues if i layer a kick or bass if i dont eq that is and not while parallel compressing . Its a mystery to me ...maybe I do get phasing but only the saturation shines through
@Doctormix
@Doctormix 6 лет назад
Nik Alevizos I know, it can be a little bit confusing. Think of the peaks and valleys of the soundwaves. If they are the same they build on top of each other, if they are the same but in the opposite direction they cancel each other out. Check this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-52kbgFAuu6k.html

Nice video man, can't quite grasp my mind around what compression is all ive gotten from other RU-vid videos was that it makes loud sounds quieter and quieter sounds louder. People dont really explain how the threshold and ratio works and affects the sample or sound. I know its used to make drums punchier . What i wanna know is how?
@oblivionwalker8613
@oblivionwalker8613 5 лет назад
What compression does is reduces the dynamic range. So there is less difference between loud and soft. There is a *perceived* increase in volume due to the quiet sounds now having equal power to the loud ones. Threshold is how loud you have to get before the compressor does its thing. Sounds below the threshold are not compressed. Attack is how long it takes to kick in, and release is how long it takes to give out. A quick attack will cut off a transient, but a slow attack will allow some of it to pass. Ratio is how extreme the gain reduction is. 5:1 would be +5db source, +1db track, so a difference of 20db would become only 4db- greatly smoothing out massive transients from things like snare drums! While compression can add huge punch to sources, it can also make things sound dull and lifeless if overdone. Experiment during your mixing and find what sounds good!
@FrancoContreras05

Is better if you stop talk and only move the contols of attack, release, etc during the demonstration. To really listen the music and the differences. So we can concentrate in the audio and no in "and lets move this and this". It s only a suggerence. Thanks

Lovely video content! Forgive me for butting in, I am interested in your opinion. Have you researched - Rozardner Stopping Sounds Reality (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is an awesome exclusive guide for transforming you into A guitar legend minus the headache. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my GF finally got cool results with it.

How we can connect this compressor plugin with fl studio

@ridhey01

Sorry i forgot to mention the hardware plugin, how we can link with fl studio
@Doctormix
@Doctormix 6 лет назад
IamBigKnight oh I see! While we have FL we don't use it so often and I'm not sure how to setup the in/out connections on it. I'm sure it can be done but you need at least an interface with 4 in and 4 outs, so that you can use out 1-2 for the monitors and in/out 3-4 for your piece of hardware. I like Cubase because it's very easy to set this up, which is one of the reason it's our main DAW here at our studios.
@TomKaosOfficial
@TomKaosOfficial 5 лет назад
IamBigKnight Like he said, youd need a interface, if you have a analog Eq or anything already hooked up with your setup it should work. Otherwise you can just get a Plugin compressor that can possibly match the quality at Plugin Alliance.

Don't listen to the volume change of the drums watching this video, listen to the texture of the sound. When the parallel channel kicks in the whole sound changes. First thing evident is the room ambience improvement but listen also to the more pronounced attack and how the drums become really 3 dimensional. There is no way to this by turning up the volume

Of course cubase is better than pro tools. pro fools (joke) makes sense only in connection with the hd system. many channels with little latency and everything runs from one source in larger recording studios. but as a native daw there is hardly a reason to use pro tools. for some it is a question of faith. for me a question of possibilities. cubase simply offers a lot more. I work with both. but always, if possible, prefer cubase. very beautiful video. This compressor is a powerful and expensive weapon. and one of the nicest in the recording world. sometimes the eyes listen too... :)))) peace, from germany/nürnberg
