EXTREME - Ranking The Albums with Pete Pardo and Martin Popoff 

3 sides is an absolute masterpiece. Tons of intelligence and virtuosity! And songs that are all epic and timeless. Pornographity combines the best of Van Halen (DLR era) with Queen, a band that was the biggest inspiration on Extreme. Nuno’s Washburn axe is almost as iconic as the Frankenstrat. And now, I will watch Extreme perform at the Freddy Mercury tribute, for the 3rd time this year 😉

Brian May has stated even he couldn't play the solo on Get the Funk Out which speaks volumes about Nuno. They are also Queen's favourite band.

It was the chunk Chuck Chuck Chuck a chunka chunk before the the guitar solo on Get The Funk Out that really got me interested in this band ..and with Extreme “pulling back” on Waiting For The Punchline during the grunge era. They only had two options… going with the flow and pulling back with the guitars, or going full bore guitar fun explosion. They went with the former.

My favourite album is III Sides to Every Story. I loved it in 1992 and still love it, especially The Truth. I never really liked the funk metal stuff they did prior. Now I appreciate it.

Interesting to me that you all described Punchline’s production as “lifeless”. I actually think it sounds very “live”, almost like you’re in the room, which I think is the most interesting and appealing thing about that album, along with the guitar sound. To me it’s a nice little oddball in the catalog and adds some variety…a different flavor. The songs can drag in places, I agree with that aspect, but the production and guitar keep me interested.

III sides is probably my favorite album from the '90's. Production is off the charts. Phenomenal songs. I actually love all 3 sides

I heard them ca when the debut was released with tracks like Mutha (Don't Wanna Go to School Today), Kid Ego and Play with Me from a radio-show here in Norway.. Was really into them on the debut and Pornograffiti. But after I started to listen more to music that was a bit more extreme haha the style

I wish Hack and Martin would do a ranking of The Tea Party albums. Such a criminally underrated Canadian band from Windsor, Ontario.

Absolute love 3 sides…. Very Queenlike in it’s ambition and brilliance… Even with the album cover (see The Miracle). And I absolutely adore every second/note of The Truth/Everything Under The Sun..

Love Punchline. Might be my favorite. Best guitar tone Nuno ever had. Tons of bite and attack. Not your standard issue humbucker through Marshall sound.

I was at the same show in Feb '93 and I believe it was Massey Hall.

Waiting for the Punchline Regarding the length of III Sides, while I have become accustomed to the duration of the entire record, it also never seemed to bother me way back when I first listened either. Let's also factor the B-side 'Don't Leave Me Alone which was originally going to be positioned between 'God Is Dead' and 'Rise and Shine', was ultimately left off the record due to the capacity of the CD, where Nuno reportedly said that omitting the song was like "losing an arm?" Could 'The Truth' section have ideally been released as potentially an EP where Don't Leave Me Alone be an album closer?! Thinking about it now, the band would have to come up with another title for the album too... 🤔

Pornograffiti was also my first taste of Extreme in late 1991. Loved all the songs and the diversity. In 1992, I heard the debut album and it blew my mind. III Sides was ok, but that and "Waiting For The Punchline" didn't hit me like the first two did. Summer of 1993, I saw Extreme open for Bon Jovi at Darien Lake (Buffalo,N.Y) and they blew Bon Jovi away!! Nuno's guitar sounded exactly like it did on the record, note for note, tone for tone perfection. Cherone's vocals were brilliant as well. Not that MY opinion matters, but here's my rankings. #1. Pornograffiti. #2. Extreme (debut). #3 Waiting For The Punchline and #4. III Sides To Every Story. Great show, Mr. Hack! I was a day late watching this, sorry.

3 sides Porno Debut Punchline Saudades

Extreme is one of my all-time favorite bands. Nuno is a genius. Gary is an awesome vocalist. Pat is very underrated. And their three drummers got groove. I first heard them on MTV with More Than Words, bught the album, listened to that song on repeat 10 times, and then I let the CD play... and I was blown away.

The debut album got play on The Friday Rock Show and the album got a good score in the UK music press, so I bought the album & really liked it. When the second album came out the video put me off as it seemed like Gary had adopted an Anthony Kiedis persona, but I bought the album and liked it but not as much as the first. Saw them on that tour (with Saigon Kick) & didn't enjoy them ...... all seemed very choreographed and lacking spontaneity. I didn't buy anything else from them at that time. Picked up the other albums from bargain bins in the early 2000s and liked them enough. When they came back I saw them (with Dan Reed Network) and they were fantastic. Completely changed my mind, and to this day I enjoy all their records.

Well, now I want to listen to Waiting for the Punchline. I don't think you made your case against that record except for bad production. Good songs, grungy album, betlaesque psych, great guitar work from Nuno, depressing album, zeppleinesque sitar, Alice in Chains vibe. All that sounds great to me.

Great show with Kings X opening and I believe Rock Fantasy camp with Glen Hughes Earl Slick and Kip Winger. Great Album. Should have done better business.Decent Album cover. 2. III Sides-Ambitious. Not Quite What I expected at the Time.Immaculate Production. Great guitar tones and songs.Though lyrics could get a little preachy. Rewards with repeated listens.Lot of depth. Tragic Comic should have been a hit single. Clever lyrics and video. Saw them on this tour .Now they could afford a horn section.Saigon Kick opened.Outstanding double bill. 1. Pornograffitti-Where it all started for me. Songs, Riffs, Harmonies, Humor. Never gets old.I would have ended the album with "Song for Love" though and left Hole Hearted off. Always felt like a tacked on bonus Track to me. Even after all these years I Always hear something new and pick up little nuances.

Have you ever thought of doing this with the first eleven albums from Chicago? Albums from Chicago after the 1st eleven don't count in my book.

Being compared to Queen is not a compliment, in my opinion.

Hated "More Than Words" so much, I never really listened to them outside of that album. I really hated that era in general, and that "More Than Words" was a real flag waver for why I did. That and that stupid "Finish What You Started" by VH (Hagar so annoying and the rest of the band....stop smiling so much already!) Anyway, just thinking of these two songs makes me wanna hurl. Maybe I'll go back and try again, but maybe not too.

Gary should have never been involved with van Halen maybe extreme would have been more successful

Like Martin and Pete says sometimes, if you can't get past the voice then I can't fully get on. His annoying ass silly prancy ass dancy moves and his voice that has always annoyed me. He's like a poor mans Sammy Hagar. Speaking of VH. Gary is on the one Van Halen album that I can not listen to at all. The goofy ass debut album. So silly and juvenile. And Pornograffitti being just about as silly. Get The Funk Out? How goofy. And those first two album covers are just awful. Now having said all of that... The last three Extreme albums I like quite a few songs off of all them. Still not a fan of his voice but it improved a lot when he wasn't being a total fucking goofball like he was on those first two albums. That silly and fun smiley shit was cut back big time and that helped lots. Their last album had some of that but it wasn't goofy. It worked fine.
