III Sides to Every Story really blew my mind when I bought the cassette tape in 1993. Extreme had confused me because I thought more than words and get the Funk Out were a little cheesy. Extreme had become a band that I would just hate on default. However I couldn’t ignore Nuno’s talent as a guitar player, and when I heard Rest In Peace on Much Music (Canada’s MTV) I knew there was more to this band than More Than Words. When I listened to Side One of III sides to every story I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. It was literally Funk Rock/Funk Metal Guitar. It was perfect, and then then all of side two was a collection of progressive soft ballad songs. I can’t think of a band that has ever had this heavy/soft split on record. The concept of the album is that it’s three sections or sides. Side one is called “Yours” (The heavy Side), section two is Called “Mine” (The soft side), and section three is called “The Truth” which is three songs that have a progressive feel to them and it even has a Symphony Orchestra. Unfortunately the mainstream didn’t understand the genius concept of this album and it mostly flew under the radar. The Grunge and Alternative rock movement didn’t help the album either, regardless I highly recommend this album, for the production, the guitar playing and the really cool concept that is even more relevant now that we are living in the Information Age that really does feel like the Truth is being obscured by an information war between my opinion and your opinion.
