Our Story:
We are Carissa, Iwan & Frankie the sausage dog, and in 2020 decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month we were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call home. We picked up Albi, Joao and Simao the cats along the way, as well as Diogo the podengo and a flock of chickens.

That's in Brazilian portuguese, it's full of bad syntax that will create a lot of confusion for a native portuguese speaker. Just watch a TV show in Portuguese with English subtitles. I've learned a few languages good enough that way.

I see the app uses the Brazilian variant. That's not ideal, especially for understanding what Portuguese are saying because the phonetic is quite different. Even the overall timing is different. The Brazilian variant is sylable-timed, whereas the European variant is stress-timed. This makes a huge difference in understanding. Portuguese people will understand your Brazilian accent, but you'll have trouble understanding them. One example of sylable-timed versus stress-timed: the word "excellent", which translates to "excelente". A Brazilian would pronounce it with all sylables, like "ex-ce-len-te" (some accents add a "ch" in "te", like "ex-ce-len-tche"). A Portuguese would say something more similar to "xlent". The non-tonic vowels are mainly omitted. The most famous example, that Brazilians actually joke with us about, is "cholesterol". They pronounce it "co-les-te-rol", whereas we say "colstrol".

Rosetta Stone has offered only Brazilian Portuguese, not European Potuguese. It is quite different. Same with babbel and duo lingo. Since I live in Portugal and since it is an enormous undertaking to learn a new language, it seemed to make more sense to learn European. Some fast learners might be able to make the shift in dialects easily.

We’ve been learning Portuguese for nearly 3 years now so it’s fairly easy to distinguish between the two. It’s basically the same as learning English in Liverpool and then moving to Australia.

Hey, the app is teaching you Portuguese (BR). In Portuguese (PT) some words have a different meaning and the grammar is also different. Thanks for all the videos. 🙂

It is so wonderful of you to want to improve your Portuguese. In saying that, the app seems to be teaching Brazilian Portuguese instead of European Portuguese. There is quite a difference as Portugal emphasizes the consonants and Brazil emphasizes the vowels. I could be wrong but that is the pronunciation I heard.

That same smoke enveloped my home in Pittsburgh PA a couple of days ago. We had two days of very unhealthy, heavy air sitting on top of the entire Mid-Atlantic region of the US. Crazy that you are experiencing the same thing across the pond in Portugal. You two have come such a long way in the short time you’ve been on your land. The improvements to your driveway are really going to make your lives so much easier going forward.😊

I think some of your smoke is travelling down from the Ontario and Quebec fires. We’re having some of the worst air quality levels ever here (Toronto area) and elsewhere. We’re trying very hard to put them out. Sorry!🇨🇦

I'm so sorry that we are sharing our forest fire smoke with you from Canada. Even places here in the north like tundra areas are burning. Fires starting by March from early heat and lack of winter rains or snow. A major fire in the province of British Columbia is expected to burn until the hopeful Oct. rains. The world is on fire!

You would be amazed at how a neck cooling bandana can help with the heat. I soak mine in water, then put in a plastic bag, and into the fridge/freezer. You can put several into the plastic bag at a time. After you have worn one for a while, and the cooling effect has lessened, just go to the fridge, and get a fresh one. You can pick them up very cheap online. They do make a difference.

In troubled garden areas, try using electroculture. Wrap copper wire around a tall stick/bamboo with the wire extending above the stick & below the stick/bamboo. What this does is takes energy from the aether down to the roots beneath the soil. Results=healthier, larger plants & produce. I have been using this and it works!

I ❤ the new panel and over the doorway gives some winter protection too 😊 have you considered a little cross bracing on the patio for stability? I see you have some beautiful seed to collect soon in your allium bed. Please dont use tyres in your garden. They leach chemical nasties into your soil and food. I love that they are shallow and confining to a small space but worry about the toxins. Digging a hole in situ, where you plan to garden in the next season, for all your compostable waste is a better way to improve soil and you can plant in it quickly. Your garden is deliciously abundant, the figs and tomatoes are beautiful ❤ the sunflowers glorious and your zinnias inspire me.

I think you need to blalre out on your boom box "working on the chain gang" by The Pretenders, this is what US prisoners used to do as hard labour. I will try the corguetts as you suggest, I do my cucumbers that way and they are delicious. Actually if you put a little salt on them, and let them rest (in the fridge) they let out enough juice that you dont need any oil.

Can' believe that the smoke from the Canadian fires are reaching Portugal. I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia and we too are suffering with bad air. I heard on the radio yesterday that the fires cannot be put out completely unti lthe autumn which means we will be dealing with this air for several months yet. The smoke must being carried across the ocean by the jet stream. According to the weather on my iphone it says "Unhealthy for sensitive groups." Fortunately, I am not in that category, but can see the naze every day. do enjoy your chancel very much. You and Ewan work very hard on your land. And I love seeing the animals. Jane, Philadelphia

Zucchinis are great stuffed with all sorts of fillings. It grills easily which I add to lasagne. It's usually feast or famine with them. You can also preserve them in chutneys.

I noticed when you were putting up the new solar panel that you laid them flat on the roof. I know it has a small slope but thought you would need a bigger pitch/angle for optimum sun capture. Here in Ireland the optimum pitch is around 40 degrees though I appreciate you probably don’t need as steep in Portugal.

Consider mixing grass seeds with rubble. They are hardy and will help binding the rubble together

Beautiful place :-)last night I made a yummie meal with Swiss chard and the insta pot .you might like to try pasta on the bottom , two hand fulls of Swiss hard less if u like chopped , fresh herbs from garden, one can of tomatoes crushed , ( you could add mushrooms or barley it would give a nice chew or any other vegs eggplant might be nice .) then I added Italian seasoning , garlic onion powder, and a chicken cube for flavour ( you could add what u like this turned out tasting Italian , you know ? Then I added vegan sausage , Any how it was a beautiful dinner :-)

Just a suggestion, I learned improve my English by reading the weekly easy read magazines for woman, lots of pictures, gossip and not much heavy subjects and it helped a little, till I started talking to a friend from Glasgow and did not understand a word😅😊 I been in England for 40 years and I am still learning. 😅😊

The voice reconition on Rosetta Stone is incredible! I've never seen that before. That would be amazing for my welsh lessons 😅 that is my BIGGEST struggle. We don't have a fridge on the land so it's good to see the new additionally panels work to run it throughout the night, as we are looking at options for this next 😀we have so many solar generators but limited panels! Lovely update .....Your Portuguese weather is very similar to ours...fortunatley 32.c in the shade seems to be our constant...up to 34.c midday only in built up areas. our sea breeze tempers the heat. We are still getting the Sahra Sand

U need to be watering plants regularly. Get a water system built in where u have not very deep trenches in the soil near by along all veggies and then u send the water down so it runs all way down and waters the soil there regularly to the plants.

Hello there. Im a Lancashire lad and i couldn't stand 40 degrees. 30 is bad inuff. In the summer months if it was hot we would start work at first light. I remember 1976 that was a really hot summer and went on for months.

Congratulations on your new language skills. I did not have language aids, but I learned ungrammatical Hungarian by immersion. I did study words and was beginning to get by in conversation with a Hungarian who spoke some English in six months, but was exhausted by the end of a day together. I’ll bet she was too. I was there for just a year, but had improved a lot by then. I did less well in Thai in the same amount of time.

I don’t think we’ll use concrete for the driveway.. most likely a liner, some sand and then a driveable surface.. possibly road bricks

You need a Vapors arrestor system to catch water from mist air, it will provide the water. Rest you guys are doing amazing. I wish I had al this in your neighborhood. Stay Blessed
