Hvac wiring isn’t terribly difficult. What will REALLY get you is the communicating systems with condenser wiring controlling the air handler… man the York heat pumps are the worst! 10 colors, hat have to be wired one way at the stat, one way at the condenser, then a completely different way at the air handler… multistage, multi speed system… with outdoor thermostats as well… One unit has like 30 different connections…

I never could understand why a PCB is used in a simple air handler like that when just relays and contactors will work just the same....Just remember to wire a bypass link to provide fan power from the first contactor or sequencer in case the fan relay fails. This forces the fan forces the fan to run when the heat strips are powered on.

The fan on and off delays get an extra very small bump in SEER rating for the system. Of course whatever energy savings there is over the life of the system is lost x1000 when the board fails!🤣 In those air handlers, the first heat relay already has a provision for powering the fan on, so no need to add one.

The board only existed to delay the blower on and off to gain a very small bump in the efficiency ratings. The energy savings is so small that it would take a decade or more to cover the difference in cost between replacing the control board and ditching it for a relay. The control board failure already wasted many times more energy than it would have saved in the conceivable life of the equipment. The cooling and heating capacity of the system is unaffected. Whatever dehumidification benefit of delaying the blower on that was lost is more than regained in not delaying the blower off when the system shuts off. The only real drawback is that in heat pump heating mode, the air coming out of the vents will take a little longer to warm up.

I follow you because you bleed knowledge and you are definitely schooling my interest and I see the point on earlier comments regarding saving time and parts costs. But this is the first video where I've seen a (still quality) repair, but wonder out loud if the amount of working backwards & the adapting you did to get the relay you installed to work is better than a replacement OEM board. The next guy (if its not you) may struggle to follow a manufacture schematic on the inside of the panel now that components and wiring aren't the same?

@@NEW_INSITEThat's a cold & ignorant response. You ignored the heart of the comment and just showed with your attitude why the trades are so badly looked upon and how the numbers of trades people are in decline.

If you were going to kill power to the airhandler anyway why not do it before you pulled the wire off that caught fire?

Wow😮 why not replace the board?
@markbeiser
@markbeiser 3 месяца назад
Board not stocked on truck. Board costs several times what the relay costs. Board just delays the blower turning on and off to give an extremely small boost in SEER ratings. Difference in cost between installing new board over ditching it in favor of a relay would take a decade or more to get back in whatever energy saving there may be. Board failing already wasted more energy and the customers money than there was ever any potential for saving over the life of the equipment.

After installing a new high efficiency AC, the very next month the customer was outraged to receive a bill about one thousand dollars greater than ever before. It turned out that the energy provider misread the meter. Rare. It occurred only once in my career.
@d.c.3220

That is rare considering many more meters these days relay data electronically. Nearly 80% of the meters in the US are smart meters. Meter readers are going extinct fast.

Supposedly Duluth MN is the place to move to because of climate change. Duluth has cooler summers, in the seventies, but winter is cold. If you're into winter activities, snowmobiling, ice fishing, ice skating, cross country skiing, etc. Duluth is on Lake Superior and close to Canada. It's a nice small city with a craft beer scene. The nearest big city is Minneapolis about 160 miles south.

Central air is stupid anyway. The majority of your money is just lost through the duct work. You're better off having an AC in every room. It will be vastly more efficient and cheaper.

My AC is blowing non cool air, I know I'll leave it on for a month and rack up a 20 amp load 24 hours a day for 30 days. Come on people, unless you live in Death Valley, your AC should never be running 24 hours a day non stop.

You literally just saved this house from burning down 😳
@kuhrd
@kuhrd 3 месяца назад
That is the reason electrical wiring and controls in metal boxes and enclosures are the safest option. The odds of that relay failure causing a fire are pretty low because it is enclosed in metal. If it started burning the wires eventually it would short out to the chassis or break the circuit and by that point you would smell the electrical fire inside the house and could safely get out of the house and eventually investigate the issue.
