Why did you spend all that time cleaning it up and then you just sandblasted it anyway you could have sandblasted it from the start and got the same effect
@jarule275

Taking off the first layer before hand does two things: Takes less time in the sand blaster and keep rust residue out of the blasting basin.

I just finished an axe restoration myself and had to put a new handle in it. I removed the stain/clear from the new handle since it had runs and I could do better. I scraped it with a knife, cutting edge 90 degrees to the wood, to remove the bulk of the clear and save sandpaper, then I sanded it and added boiled linseed oil on it.

But you’ll add yellow on axe because Sweden 🇸🇪 flag is blue and yellow. That’s fine if you don’t want to add yellow paint on axe. GREAT AXEMAKER!!!! See ya next time 👍

@john_perrier

So if you're going to grind it all down nice and shiny is there any point in wasting time scraping it and picking at it and putting it in rust remover? Couldn't you just wear a mask and grind as your first step? Also the same thing for the handle, why waste time using the remover, why not just sand it down? I'm not trying to be rude I'd really just like to know. Is there a point to these steps or are you just doing it for the video. I've refinished a few axes myself and if I'm going to shine it up, I just start with an abrasive wheel right away.

When you factor in the cost of a new handle plus all the supplies and labor to restore it would it have been more cost effective to just go buy a new axe ? Don't get me wrong you did an awesome job. Very satisfying to watch you do it as well :)

That's a good point Chris and I think about it sometimes when I restore an axe. But there is the satisfaction of taking a classic ax and giving it a new life. Someone will be using this axe 100 years from now. (Plus, have you priced Swedish axes lately?) 🙂
@Masterfighterx
@Masterfighterx 8 месяцев назад
It's always worth it to restore a good quality axe, compared to buy a junk chinese axe from a hardware store. Wetterlings are sadly out of business. I always scout flea markets for old good quality Swedish or Danish (DSI, which went out of business around 2000) axes, either in usable condition at a price I can see myself paying, or as I did with the last one, found someone selling an old DSI 4 that needed a little tlc, she didn't know much about it, thus sold it to me for about what would be $12. Took the handle off, which was then scraped and sanded down, probably the original 30-40+ year old handle too, went over the head here and there, really good shape for it's age, poll hasn't been hammered too many times then it was ready, put it back on the handle, oiled it, sharpened the bit and its life is back, love it, quite short handle for the head, 4lbs and a mere 50-ish cm, but having looked at historical files it was like that when it was new. Also have some awesome old dsi hammers that I've never seen anything like before, kinda regular with nail puller but the design is so different, I think they're at least 60 years old.

You didn’t do that premium axe head justice. It looks good at a glance, but the handle was set horribly. Gaps everywhere, curling, bad finish. And the cutting edge profile was wrong. Do some research. I bet you could re-do this one and make it an absolute workhorse.
