Wow. Some people might think that software (programming) is impossible to understand, but to me (a programmer) I think that hardware is just insane, how someone can figure out all of the little joints and valves and weights to make something move like that in the physical world is beyond me...

Stirling engines could possibly be used in charge hybrid cars to drive the generator if the drive train is all electric. A longer start sequence wouldn't be an issue then. A Stirling engine can reach 50% efficiency, a modern diesel about 40% and a petrol engine around 30-35%

Heat directly converted to mechanical movement, using air...amazing design! Unfortunately the efficiency of Stirling engines is low but you could use nuclear heat this way to make an atomic jet, car, ship etc.
@D8W2P4
@D8W2P4 4 года назад
Actually for heat engines they are the most efficient, their most major problem however is power density. To highlight this issue a Stirling engine that makes say 40 HP might need a cylinder the size of a 55 gallon drum to do it, while a much smaller and lighter IC engine you could entirely fit in a suitcase will easily use 2-3x (Diesel and Gasoline respectively) the fuel to make that same power.

Wrote too soon, only one cylinder the other side is the valves I think.
@burkejohnson4539
@burkejohnson4539 3 года назад
@@scotttaylor215 Nope, this is a dual cylinder style sterling engine, with a 'hot' and 'cold' cylinder. Both are required to run, as the engine operates on the principal that the gas will decrease in volume when moved to the cool cylinder and increase in volume when moved to the hot cylinder. There is another kind of sterling engine that has one cylinder, but it still works on the same principal as in this configuration, there is, in addition to the power piston, a large 'displacer' inside the cylinder that is like a piston, but lets the gas around the edges. It's duty is to displace the gas from one side or the other and force it to move between the hot and cold ends of the cylinder. However, in all cases, the sterling engine requires no valves whatsoever. In fact, the interior of the engine, whether one or two cylinder configuration, is one continuous volume that is sealed to the outside.

it's called the flicker frequency and happens at multiples of 24 ... 24 frames a second being what your eyes and brain can process at one time ... this is why video's make still pictures seem to move ... after 36 frames you wont recognize a change to quality until approximately 72 frames a second .. it happens to be on a logarithmic scale.
@TheShowdown16
@TheShowdown16 7 лет назад
0623kaboom the flicker frequency is just about how small the time between two stimulations can be so your eye cant differciat them, thats not same as something feeling smooth, you can have a smooth picture but your eyes will start to hurt over time if the frequency of what ever device your looking at is to low. Alot depends on the person, the age, how strong the change is and many other things. Also the processing speed of your brain can increase temporary, that's what happens when you can feel time "slowing down" in a dangerous situation. But unfortunately this has not much to do with the effect you can see in this video because the effect of something standing still, because it has the same frequency as the recording only happens to cameras not the human eye. For the human eye fast moving stuff just becomes blurry.

If you power this in reverse will it get very cold?
@ryandavidsheasby4028
@ryandavidsheasby4028 8 лет назад
nope. it'll get warm at the end. this is because air heats up when it's compressed. this is why your tyres get warm when you pump them.
@johncochran8497
@johncochran8497 8 лет назад
Yes it will get cold. If you supply external power to a Sterling engine, it acts as a heat pump, moving heat from one end to another. In fact, do a search for Sterling Cryocooler. Unfortunately, the Sterling engine isn't as efficient as a Rankine cooler for higher temperatures, but for -30 to -40 degrees Celsius, the Rankine coolers aren't effective since there are no refrigerants that boil at low a temperature. At that point, the Sterling engine is quite useful and a single stage cooler is capable of getting to about 73 K (able to liquefy nitrogen, oxygen, argon). You can get colder using a two stage system to get down to 20 K (hydrogen and neon), but there are other methods of getting that cold or colder more efficiently.
@therandomman6647
@therandomman6647 5 лет назад
No, you can if you use a low temperature differential engine tho
@daviddavids2884
@daviddavids2884 5 лет назад
your question lacked clarity. if (rotational) force/energy is put in at the Crankshaft, what was the hot side becomes colder. what was the cold side, gets warmer. the affect is just a novelty. this is not an energy efficient way to produce cooling. in part, because there is an Excessive amount of heat produced, Along with the cool. googletranslate

If you took a 50 gallon drum, filled it about half full of pig droppings, ran a tube up to the place where you have the wick, I think you could have an engine run as long as you could get the pig to make your fuel. Might work with cow droppings too.

The best would be to make only the part that is over the flame from a good thermal conductor like brass and the connection between hot and cold part of the displacer from a bad conductor like stainless steel and then the cold part again from a good conductor.

You can clearly observe second order harmonic vibrations left to right due to the fact that the connecting rod is not of infinite length and the piston has different values for acceleration and deceleration at both ends (top and bottom or left and right in this case). This effect cannot be counterbalanced that easily. Also, it is also in the vertical plane, but there it is not that important, as the base is rigid enough.
@El_Chompo
@El_Chompo 7 лет назад
From what I've been able to figure for an engine to be perfectly balanced, one way would be to have opposing pistons that connect to the same point on the crankshaft and go in and out and fire at the same time. One piston would have split connecting rod that overlaps the other's, with exactly the same weight. The connecting rods would drive the crank 180 degrees from each other on opposite sides. All up and down and side to side motion should then exactly be opposed and balanced by the opposing overlapping piston con rod setup. I have a picture on my other computer that I drew.
