I added AIS (Automatic Identification System) to our boat. Do we needed it? NO. But I'm a nerd and love technology. It's not a total waste as it does serve a purpose on major waterways. If we were to ever use the boat on an inner coastal water way or a major river like the one a few hours south of us (Columbia River) where AIS is more common, it would definitely come in handy.
It also makes this boat more appealing to anyone on the coast if we were to ever sell the boat.
The unit I installed was a used Garmin AIS 600 which is no longer in production but still works as designed and fully functional at half the price of a new one.
There are two major differences between the Garmin 800 and 600. The 800 has an internal GPS antenna whereas the 600 requires the external GPS antenna. The 800 also pushes out 5 watts vs 2 watts on the 600. There are a few other upgrades with the 800, but they had no effect on my decision to purchase the 600.
On a side note. I also have a AIS receiver on land that receives AIS signals and feeds them to Marrinetraffic.com. I have had this link up for the last 10 years but it has been dormant for the last 3-4 years. I just recently refreshed the link to Marine Traffic.
