It's rumored that he wrote this song at age 19. Absolutely wild to think about the amount of wisdom he had at such a young age

2pac is no stranger to including violence and drug use in his music. The inclusion and even glorification of these things can however be politically motivated. This stems from the systemic oppression of black people in america increasing poverty and in turn the vices present in many rap songs. The song in this video approaches that issue with hope and calls for change within the community itself. Whereas, the presentation of violence appraoches the same social issue with hopelessness. That hopelessness being the assumption that change cannot occur within the community, but must be external through legislation and social provisions. The inclusion of violence in rap is the inclusion of people's everyday lives in the ghetto. By being provocative it aims to create discussion that will ultimately lead to that change. Of course this isn't always the case, but its unfair to just discount violence as being apolitical.

You can't even touch on political or conscious rap without touching on Public Enemy or BDP (KRS One). They were in the forefront of the Edutainment Era. You should check Public Enemy's "Black Steel In The Hour of Chaos" or "Fight The Power". Sound of The Police and You Must Learn are 2 great choices from BDP
