On June 13th Eyedea & Abilities performed their new album "By The Throat" for an intimate audience at Intermedia Arts in Minneapolis, MN. Each song was prefaced with a short story or an explanation about that song. Michael Gaughan, the artist responsible for the album artwork, did a watercolor painting of the duo while they performed. "Spin Cycle" is the first video in this series so stay tuned. More videos to come!

Listen to: RSE Radio Eyedea Tribute, here on RU-vid, It's Slug, Ali and a bunch of other guys doing a tribute show to Mikey where they share memories of him and play some of his fantastic music. Also Google ''The Man Behind the Eyedea'' it's a piece written by Sage Francis about his friendship and memories of Mikey. @andy589 Its actually a guitar note hes scratching, and hes using the controller one to change the pitch of that guitar note, so its actually like playing a keyboard while scratching at the same time, and they say the turntable isnt an instrument. And you can actually hear the regular sound play out at 3:58 into the video, it sounds like its actually two guitar notes. Idk where you could get that sound, he probably made it himself. There are some records with sounds like that.

This song is great, best turntable solo I EVER to be had on a song, and this is coming from someone who does turntablism like abilities, its not easy to do that type of scratching, its like hes actually hitting notes and chords. And to anyone curious as to what gear hes using. Vestax controller one (Turntable A) Technics 1200 or 1210 (Turntable B) Serato scratch live Pioneer djm 909 Macbook Needles look like Shure m44-7's

Man progression is NOT a bad thing. You people are lame. It's refreshing that he has thought outside of the box. The typical kick kick snare and insert punchline here is old...? We have been listening to that for awhile now. I have followed Anticon for awhile so maybe that is why experimental directions do not bother me as much. Checkout Hymie's Basement in my videos. Experimental Hip-Hop is nothing new and I am happy more artists are headed that way.

this performance and song have a vaguely gritty reminiscence of old school rock, from the 70's I know hes not hitting the notes perfectly but thats the idea, its really cool. People talk about kanye doing 'new stuff' eyedea was ahead of himself. him and Dj abilities are amazing

This is probably the best song on the album, and that is saying a lot. I was expecting something different for sure, but this kind of different is too much. I'll try to give it a chance, but man, I would die for some old E and A. I am hoping he makes more music and kinda mixes everything back together into something solid. I am hoping the style of this album was just something he wanted to get off of his chest hahah.

it must be nice to be cage or eydea. i bet if kweli, lif, vast aire, myka 9, aceyalone, etc etc tried this route, people would call them sell outs and would accept it for one second. must be nice... but honestly, most hip-hop is redundant. from the 50 cents to the commons. right now...antipop consortium, thavius beck, k-the-i???, subtlte, jel, alias, buck 65, subtle, daedelus, prefuse, busdriver are pretty much the only people pushing hip-hop forward

The restaurant thing is honestly just such a specious argument. If I went to a restaurant and absolutely loved everything the chef made, I would absolutely want the chef to experiment, and I would be first in line to try his new foods because I think that the chef is a genius and has a real flair for creating great food. If you create something good and then never want to try something else, maybe you really weren't that creative in the first place.

This is one of the most ignorant musical opinions I have ever heard. This guy is basically saying Eyedea isn't hip-hop (and therefore sucks) because he's singing, but Max IS hip-hop (and therefore rules) because he is using a turntable. Wow. It must be nice to view the world in such simplistic tones. Talking about "this isn't the same Eyedea and Abilities." Of course it is. Who do you think the two guys in the video?

@gugigistufandog Eyedea was a metalhead as a young kid, and he just liked to try out a lot of music styles I guess. Lots of artists change as they mature and reach later phases of their lives. Slug now is a lot different from 2000 Slug as well.

What Abilities does with that guitar solo sample at the end of this song is definitely one of the most beautiful things he's done on record ever. It's close to perfect.
