Captain Duncan "Mac" Maclain is a formidable private detective who happens to be blind; but his other senses are sharper than average. He copes with his sight deficiency by being accompanied by a dog named Friday and a human assistant named Marty.
Mac is asked by his friend Norma to break up a romantic relationship between her seventeen-year-old step-daughter Barbara and a fifty-year-old actor. Mac finds the lover has been murdered and detects his body has been removed from the scene of the crime. The murder leads him to an Axis spy ring.
---
Directed by Fred Zinnemann, produced by Jack Chertok, written by Baynard Kendrick (book The Odor of Violets), Guy Trosper (screenplay) and Howard Emmett Rogers (screenplay), starring Edward Arnold as Duncan "Mac" Maclain, Ann Harding as Norma Lawry, Donna Reed as Barbara Lawry, Stephen McNally as Gabriel Hoffman, Katherine Emery as Cheli Scott, Allen Jenkins as Marty, Stanley Ridges as Hansen, Lawry's butler, Reginald Denny as Stephen Lawry, John Emery as Paul Gerente, Rosemary DeCamp as Vera Hoffman, Lawry's maid, Erik Rolf as Boyd, Barry Nelson as Mr. Busch, Reginald Sheffield as Victor, Steven Geray as Mr. Anderson, Mantan Moreland as Alistair, Duncan's butler and Friday as Friday the dog.

Good one! Not often you see Donna Reed being a bad-ass! Loved the card trick...LOL, and the Shepard was amazing, jumping walls, going through windows, opening doors. Also, recognized some standard wrestling moves....nice to see that compared to just blowing people away...hate the fear and violence peddled in current day movies. Bottom line...movies are supposed to be for ENTERTAINMENT

I can't tell you how many times I've watched this particular movie but I love it more and more each time. You see the man that played the blind man reminds me a lot of an old friend that has passed away his name was Tony any he had so much of the same characteristics the actor that played that part. Tony even look like the actor believe it or not. But for the rest of the movie and the actors and actresses they did a great job tpp. Thanks for putting this movie Up. And in the future I'll probably watch it again there's just some movies you can't get enough of

Lots of great character actors of that era and the director is no slouch. The under-appreciated Fred Zinnemann directed High Noon, Oklahoma! (musical), From Here to Eternity, and The Day of the Jackal, to name just four. Thanks TCM for posting this and other enjoyable forgotten classics.

I wouldn't mind betting that this might have been a pilot episode with the hopes of a series...Something like The Thin Man!! MGM did not renew the copyright in time, thus the movie entered the public domain in 1971. The original film elements passed on to Turner Entertainment in 1986, and Warner Bros. 10 years later. A restored version is available on WB's streaming service HBOmax.

I can't keep up with all the actors, new and old, who SEEM to be named "Edward Arnold." (googled it. I am confusing the name with Eddie ALBERT. Seem to be at least 2 actors with that name also, though. One of them is scrumptiously young and handsome. The other was the guy in the TV show about Buffy and Bobby, adorable moppet twins a bachelor inherited from a deceased brother, I think. NOT scrumptious, young, or handsome. Attractive man, of course, in the right roles, which he's always in. No...now I'm mixing up Arnold and Albert again. And confused the star of Green Acres with the bachelor who's raising the twins. It's the white hair. Boy, you people with the filing cabinets in your heads amaze me. Brian Keith! It just hit me. And it hurt my brain! LOL.)

Love Edward Arnold in every role he plays, seeing Donna Reed play this role is unsettling too, and Friday the Wonder Dog?💟 Who doesn't love seeing a great rescuer pet like this? The family dynamic vs workplace is addressed, the jealouslies..well, the writers were terrific. The assistants to the detective dialog -😂. Yep, it's got a bit of everything. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
