Su nombre real es William Michael Albert Broad, nacido el 30 de noviembre de 1955, es un músico de rock y actor británico-estadounidense. Inicialmente obtuvo reconocimiento como cantante de la banda de punk Generation X. En 1981, Idol se trasladó a la ciudad de Nueva York para iniciar una carrera en solitario en colaboración con su amigo el guitarrista Steve Stevens. Su álbum debut, Billy Idol de1982, fue un éxito comercial, hasta que en 1983 el mundo rápidamente lo conoció por "Eyes Without a Face" gracias a la cadena estadounidense de música MTV, que era un canal de música por excelencia por aquellos años ochenta.

La canción, cuyo título aludía al nombre de una vieja película francesa de terror de los años 60’s del director Georges Franju llamada “Les yeux sans visage” (“Ojos sin rostro”, en francés). Como anéctoda, el videoclip fue filmado por David Mallet durante tres agotadores días. En la parte en que Idol cantaba rodeado de fuego sentía un fuerte abrazador. Sus ojos de contacto se derritieron prácticamente por lo que el cantante tuvo que ser transladado a urgencias de un hospital donde solucionaría este grave percance.
