The Eyewitness to History video library was created to enable audiences everywhere to hear firsthand testimony from Holocaust survivors. This video was created from a live digital program, First Person: Conversations with Holocaust Survivors, recorded on June 22, 2022. It featured Holocaust survivor Louise Lawrence-Israëls, who was born in Haarlem, the Netherlands, in 1942. When she was six months old, her family went into hiding in an attic in German-occupied Amsterdam. Louise’s parents tried to provide as normal a childhood as possible for Louise and her older brother. When Louise was almost three, Canadian forces liberated Amsterdam and her family was finally able to leave their hiding place.

Thank you Louise. Your brother wanting his toy back at the end of the night made me smile.

Thank you for all you've shared! Such a detailed life story of love and protection! Remarkable parents you have. Gifting the small wicker chair to the museum was such a beautiful thing to do, it will last lifetimes. I am a very protective mother myself, being the Native American mother of one child. We have the generational trauma too, of senseless genocide, since 1492. Bless your beautiful heart. We remain!

As a child my Parent's watched "World at War" my Father would say, "This should never happen again!" They would cried because many of their young Latino friends died in WWII some didn't returned "MIA & POW". They were young boys/men. My cousin's were fresh out from Southern n Northern High School. My Dad was a Civil Defense F4 Recruite. They wore their Patrol Suit's & Secured the Streets in Fresno CA. John Belusi made a movie 1941 of the Civil Defense it was a comedy. But the Japan Japan 🇯🇵 nor German 🇩🇪 Ship's got close but never attacked USA 🇺🇸 soil that I'm aware.

It is great story, priceless remainder what was it at that time during the Nazis and why we must learn our lessons. Unfortunately, this never happens - we see what happened now with Ukraine because of the invasion and crimes of Russia - similar destruction and crimes against humanity. Innocent people died everyday, and the world just watch these crimes and do nothing. Back to the story - I believe that Selma played a big role in the life of Louise and told her everything in such small details through the years - to be known and never forgotten! Because Louise at that time was baby and I don't think she remembers anything. Usually first real memories came after the fourth year of the childhood. God bless Louise and all innocent souls that suffered during these dark years of the human history! 🇺🇦 🇺🇦 🇺🇦
