Hope you all enjoyed this video on the EZ Flash Definitive Edition! If you want to purchase one, here's the link to Senko Games: senkogames.com/products/ez-flash-omega-definitive-edition-de-gameboy-advance-gba-game-boy-sd-card Some people have been confused about my comment on it being 3x cheaper, it seems to be that in the US, there is less price difference, only around $30, but in the U.K., there is around £100 difference, probably due to customs tax and currency conversion. Either way, it’s cheaper, and better! :) Also, check out my new podcast! Watch -> ru-vid.com/show-UCp568HXpzX_udnOLvI-Lhsg Listen -> anchor.fm/retrobreak
I just ordered this today and my first use will be giving myself pokemon events I wanted so badly since 15+ years ago and was never able to, I can't believe I'll finally go to naval rock and birth island in leaf green with actual tickets!!!
@@khiclark31 I'll definitely be trading to actual carts and offering to trade/give events and tickets to people local to me who also never had the chance!
This will be perfect for your micro! As I said, it's so cool to be able to play GB games on there too, and it's so much cheaper than the Everdrive, and just as good! :D
You know how Deadpool says, Maximum Effort, well i put in Minimum Effort! i like this but not sure if mine will work or not as i hate doing steps, just send it to me working so i can just plug it in. When it comes in maybe i'll pay someone to get it to work. i'm very old school, but i do like the idea of this. Great video as usual & thanks for the Retro Break!
Wish I could go back in time about two months ago and hold off buying my Everdrive X5 mini! Very cool, blown away by just how many features they've squeezed in there, great review.
I wouldn’t regret it, the EZ Flash cards suck up more energy from the GBA, so the battery lasts less. The Everdrive is actually great in that regard, as it uses as little as possible in resources to function. It still uses more energy than what normal cartridges do but less than the EZ
My omega, previous to definitive even came with two shells. One for the Gba and one for the Ds lite. I’ve been using ez-flashes for a long time and they’ve worked great. A Ds lite with a Ds cart and a Gba one and you’re set for life. Hundreds of great games at your disposal.
GREAT VIDEO Nick !!!!! I wasn't even halfway through the video before I paused ordered one and then went back to the video !!! Now Gonna Check Out The Pod cast !!!
This is by far the best review on RU-vid Never understood all the different boot up options And never knew it could play all Those systems Care to share wicht emulators you use… Again Great review🙏🏻
Thanks so much! :D The great thing about that custom firmware I mentioned is that it actually comes with all the emulators pre installed so you don't even need to decide which ones to use! Just need to put rom on the SD card and you can play straight away! I will say the ones that work best are GB, NES, Game Gear and Master System from what I've tried. The game Gear one is really cool it actually lets you play the games in widescreen!
Thanks. I’ve been thinking about it as I have the ez flash IV, and the ez flash omega. Finally decide to get it, $71 with free shipping and no tax from the site you posted. Now, just waiting for it to arrive.
Great video! This thing is definitely giving the X5 a run for its money. The everdrive is $99 and this is $71 so it’s only $28 cheaper, though. I’m really curious about how much power it actually uses. The old one used DOUBLE what a regular cartridge used, while the everdrive only used 20% more. These extra features are truly amazing, though. Really hoping this lights a fire under krikzz’s belly. I’m looking forward to the everdrive GBA X7.
Here the X5 Mini is £130+ and the DE is £50 so it’s a lot cheaper compared to us prices for some reason? I couldn’t find any exact measurements for power consumption, I just know it’s less than the other EZ flash carts, probably not as low as the ED though.. will definitely be interesting to see what the next Everdrive GBA offers now there’s some good competition!
From here, it’s the only place I could find that sells them in the U.K. - www.retrotowers.co.uk/everdrive-gba-x5, it might be brexit related, or just our crappy exchange rate… with customs charges paying $99 would be around that anyway :( everything has got so expensive here over the past few years
@@RetroBreak @RetroBreak This wasn't my experience. I'm in the UK and paid £65 in total when ordering from the official everdrive website at the end of November (there were no customs charge etc, but maybe I was just lucky).
Definitely sold me on the EX Flash! I have a slightly unusual use case in that I was looking for a flash cart to live permanently in my game boy player in a GC Loader modified GameCube and this looks perfect for my needs
Nice review! I'm very glad that you mentioned that custom firmware, I tried running nes games on the flash cart before (i put a sperate emulator on it), but all of the non-sprites on screen were a big gargled mess. I'll definitely have to try it out in the future!
For the NES games, try pressing L and R and change the sprite settings in the menu, it can help make them look better, although still not perfect.. definitely get that new firmware anyway though!
I remember the old Super Card from 2012, that had a mini SD card slot and could hold up to 2gb storage. Now it runs an insane 128GB card. that's mind blowing for 10 years later. for what you show on the video, it runs folders and software like, really really fast, that's an excellent feature. Considerating that the original OS had no home screen and was a direct boot to the game, you can start playing your games right away.
So glad you started a podcast 😊. Its my preferred media by far. I can easily feel how much you u urge to say on it. Ill be listening to every episode for sure. But please... U don't need to speak all that fast 😉. Love what you do and please keep it up 👍👍👍. Hope the "move" will end up smooth.
Thanks! I really love podcasts too, so it was about time I started my own! I’ll try and slow down a bit, you can tell I’m excited to make it haha. Going to record the next one tomorrow! Thanks for watching, and the move is a nightmare! But it will be done eventually… can’t wait to get the new game room and studio setup!
I was on the fence if I should get the EZ or the Everdrive, but you sold me on the EZ after watching this video. Ordered one from SenkoGames. Great Video!
Great and thorough review! I have a few Everdrives including the original Gameboy version but never splashed out for the GBA one as I don't feel I play my GBA enough to justify it. The price (and extra features) of this one are much more palatable! Incidentally I had an EZ Flash branded GBA flashcart back in the day - it held 4 games in its internal memory and needed a dedicated USB writer. I actually recently found the cart but it seems to be dead and the writer is nowhere to be seen. I wonder if it's the same company? 🤔
Awesome review! I would never have known about this, without this video. Definitely snatching one up soon. I recommend you put your podcast on your main channel, that gives you more regular uploads and more content to increase your subscription count.
Thanks glad you enjoyed it! And I did consider adding the podcast to the main channel, but I decided to keep it separate as I only want this channel to be proper edited videos, don't want to confuse the audience with two different styles, so I set up a separate one.
Nice video expecting mine to come on the 10th What would've been cool is instead of the in game title screen for the picture they should have done the game box art (would have also be nice if a solar & gyro sensor was in it too, minus the LED light)
You can probably change the images to the box art if you edit the file associated with the game on the SD card, but they all have weird file names so it would take a while to do it… and yeah, maybe the next version will include gyro and solar! Why not put a speaker in it too for the few GB games that had a speaker built into the cart!
Just found the channel and love the content! Subbed here and to the podcast channel :) I'm just getting into the GB/GBA side of retro games, I've dabbled with PSP for years now. Ordered a 'New' GBA from Retrosix and just put in an order for the EZ-Flash thanks to this great review! Looking forward to diving back into some of the games that defined my childhood :) thanks again.
@@RetroBreak My friend got a fully modded GBA from them last year and recommended them to me so I've ordered a green one and I'm really excited to dive in :D
@Falcon-um7vo that’s exactly what I was saying. Calling it Eee Zed is incorrect, but it never dawned on me it’s meant to be ‘Easy’ until watching this video. Not that it matters. I have the Everdrive so never need to say this anyway!
Your testing with a video file makes me think about when I used to watch One Piece episodes I converted on my DS lite with my R4 years ago... I think with Moonlight or something? Good times. Quality wasn't actually that bad
Quick question. Does this support cheats for gb and gbc? Or is it just like the everdrive only uses game genie. Oh and don’t let that one dude ruin your day. You make great videos thank you.
It uses the same emulator for game boy games, so only game genie codes unfortunately. And thanks :) I try not to let trolls bother me too much, but it’s always frustrating
Just like the Everdrive Pro, you can encode videos to play on the GBA straight away? Certainly much more convenient than the GBA Movie Player+videos encoded with GBA Movie/Music converter combo. I made a sharable Google Drive for 1GB SD/CF cards for GBA Movie Player. Aw man, now I feel insignificant.
I have a question. Will the EZ Flash Omega Definitive Cart drain less battery if it is set to stand alone cart mode (where it boots the game like a real GBA cart)? In that mode; would the battery life be the same as an actual GBA cart or is it still more drain than normal?
Great review! I’ve been looking at getting an Everdrive GBA X5 Mini versus an EZ Flash, but the price is within a $20 difference in the US, and some other reviews I’ve read online said that the EZ Flash has lower build quality, longer loading time, and higher power consumption, bringing down the overall value of the cart? If you get a chance I’d like to see you test the power consumption and see if there’s actually a difference. Really happy you did this video tho! There’s no where near enough solid EZ Flash reviews imo.
The rumble and RGB light definitely are. Maybe the NOR as I’m boring and always did normal boot so can’t remember what other options were there. The micro SD is a pain on this one as well. I have to unscrew the cover to be able to pull the thing out which is frustrating whenever I want to add new ROMs
I can't get one specific game to run on this cfw... Racing Gears Advance on GBA.... If I update to ofw, the game works, but on the SimleDE firmware, I get a black screen and glitchy sounds. Any fix?
oh man, and i just bought the everdrive gba mini like a year ago, the sleep mode and save states are pretty cool, and if they could get Neo Geo pocket emulation 100 percent id buy it in a second .
Amazing that EZ-Flash is still around. I had an EZ-Flash... 2 I think? It was probably 2003 or so it didn't use micro SD cards. Instead there was a USB writer that you put the cartridge into and it required custom drivers and software. You could use the writer to back up your own games, which was pretty cool.
@@marcianoacuerda I think that might have been an EZ Flash III or IV. A few years later I think. My one was only 256Mb, so you had to carefully choose which games to write (there were a few 256Mb games, like Mother 3 but most were 128Mb or less so you could put a few games on together).
Playing on the Analogue Pocket makes the turning off/on thing for the X5 almost a non-issue. This does look eons better than the GBA X5 Mini I had just got lol.
Do you know how to speed up games with this? I’ve been looking for a while and trying to get it with cheats for Pokémon emerald but I can’t get it to work
It should probably be mentioned in the video that CHEATS and IMGS should be in the SYSTEM folder in order for them to work according to the custom firmware
Sweet video! Ordered mine today. Whoot! Do you know if you can soft reset like with a normal cartridge. For example soft reseting for shiny pokemon? or do i have to go through menus
Nice video ! I ADORE the EZ-Flash line of cartridges. I have two EZ-Flash IV Omega and an EZ-Flash Jr. I'm also considering to buy an EZ-Flash Definitive Edition. P.S. For me the EZ-Flash IV Omega is better than the Everdrive since the day of the release, ofcourse back in 2016 the EZ-Flash IV Omega was full of bugs ... but at least the cartrige fits ALL Game Boy Advance slots (including the DS Lite one) since D1. Compared to the Everdrive GBA cartridge that (even with a better hardware/software) have continued to stick out from ALL the GBA slots until the second revision ... that still now sticks out from the DS Lite GBA slots. The new and improved EZ-Flash cartride is now big like the Everdrive version, now they both have the same dimension of a regular GBA cartridge so now is only a matter of who has better functions and power consumption. I hope that the EZ-Flash IV Omega will implement a light sensor and a giroscope for the games that uses those functions 😉 For now we have the rumble function (1 function, 2 more functions to implement).
If it didn't stick out of the ds lite slot, im pretty sure you wouldn't be able to pull it out of the original ds at all lol. And yes, some people (me included) replace the screens in that model and keep them around just because the charger matches GBA SP and it's one less cable in the drawer of handheld cables I have lol.
ik this is 2 years old, and im not super tech knowledgable, BUT i wonder if some of the battery usage compared to the EverDrive is the rumble and the LED
The LED light on mine keeps turning on even after I change the settings. How do you save settings? it just freezes after I turn it off and I can't switch tabs
Loved the guide! I'm getting an SP soon and I wanted to know whick flashcartridge was the best, watching this video was a very nice decision! Will buy one of these defenitly. I've got one question though, Does it play the GB/C Pokémon games okay? And does it let you transfer pokémon to other generations? Ty so much!!
@@monik43_ pokemon crystal has a lot of problems (all of the menus are glitched) running on the goomba emulator that both x5 mini and ez flash use. If you really want to play a non-glitched pokemon crystal on one of these flash carts, then your best option is to play pokemon crystal clear, a rom hack of pokemon crystal that is pretty much open world pokemon crystal (it's a pretty fun rom hack). Sorry if crystal was what you were looking forward to the most with these flash carts, the original crystal won't run well on them.
so it's an ezf omega with the addition of features of the old ezf V 3-in-1 slot2 device. I feel like the 3-in-1's still the better choice for nintendo dualscreen systems since it fits fully inside the Lite, so I don't know really if it's giving gba users enough over the standard omega.
Sadly it just comes up with an error screen on the analogue pocket, some people think there's going to be an update to fix it though... fingers crossed! I might make a follow up whenever it gets fixed
How is it with saving games? I had this EZ Flash Junior for Gameboy and i lost my save game very fast each time the battery drained. Some say the battery is only for real life time like in Pokémon Crystal.
It’s ok for some, but not others. Mine doesn’t work properly unless you do so,etching specific.. check back on my channel tomorrow I’ve done a follow up video where I show how to get it working on the pocket.
It’s an interesting flash card for the GBA,it would be cool to install the snes advance emulator on it so you can play some snes games on it albeit without sound, also about that save state feature, Did you know that the nes powerpak(as far as i do know) was officially never designed with save state in mind BUT loopy created an unofficial save state patch for the powerpak sothat you can save state many nes games with it,heck you can even create save state files with it and store your save states on the cf flash card permanently😁
i got mine a week before Christmas. works great! the only thing is on some NES games the picture doesn't quite fit the screen. not sure if it's an emulation issue or not but it's not a big deal to me. i mostly got it to play GBA RPGs
To save my life I can’t make this work. I’ve tried everything I can to unarchive the .bin file for the kernel firmware and it just won’t do it. I can’t get the firmware onto the as card no matter what I do.
This is going to sound dumb, but I'm new to this. Let's say I'm playing a Pokemon game and I use the save option in the Pokemon games menu. Will that allow me to load it the next time I go to that game or do I have to use save states for every game?
I still don't get how these cards work. Is emulation just for non-GBA games? And what do you need Goomba for, if the GBA natively supports GBA/Classic Games? That doesn't make sense to me.
Im tempted to buy it mostly for the mod B. I'm interested to see if it could work with the Hyperkin Retron (or whatever it's called). I already own an EZ Flash Omega, and my Everdrive X5 Mini, but I wouldn't be against checking this thing out too.
My flashcart with the official or custom firmware won't load the saves for the gameboy games. I can save perfectly fine with GBA games, but for some reason GB/GBC games won't load them or savestates. Odd thing is, is that the saves are in the save folder for the games. It just won't load them.
I've purchased two of these over the past three years. Eventually both became problematic with some of my devices as the contacts wore down quite quickly causing them to not boot. I found if I pulled the cartridges out of the reader slightly they then would boot in those devices. Eventually the problem continued to expand to all devices. Obviously if the cartridge was left in a particular device this problem would be lessened, but if pulled in and out of different devices it won't last long. I've not had this problem with any other genuine cartridges. I have a number of devices and I like to play them all.
I've got an EZ Flash Omega from about 2 years ago. Stopped using because with the IPS mod my battery only lasts about 1hr lol. Is it worth upgrading to DE?
heya! so i recently got the omega definitive and i noticed when i tried saving pokemon leaf green i got an error saying " save failed checking back up" have you ran into this? am i saving wrong
so i havent been able to find an answer to my question. i am unable to access my save data when i play games normally and save in game. when i quit the game and boot ot back up later and try to load my previously save game, there is no save game data for me to load up. is there something i need to do to get this to work? thanks!
How do you watch movies on the Gameboy ?!! I’ve never seen that. Where do you download the movies for Gameboy ? And are there any additional add ons you need other than the ez flash to watch movies on gba ?
Just ordered one on EBay for about $50. Almost half the price of what the ever drive costs with the same support for game gear, gba, master system, etc. What size sd card can read this again? Just for clarification. Says it’ll be at my house between this Saturday and this upcoming Tuesday! Looks like I have something forward to this weekend and next week. Also got the new ips screen and a new shell for my old sp. Once I fix it all up, it’ll be like 2002 all over again. Kinda though.
Hi, thanks for the great contecnt just one question, when I play Castlevania Circle of the moon it does not save, each time I save in the game, wait 5 seconds and restart the save game is gone, any helpo would be appreciated
