The Igbos have long left Nigeria behind (in mentality, in understanding, in vision, in awareness, and everything). It’s like trying to force a child into a pair of trousers that he has overgrown. That trouser will definitely tear. Igbos are travelers, and they believe in adventure. They know what a country should look like. They are the most successful and sophisticated tribe in Africa- a tribe that rose from the ashes of war with just 20 pounds, and in just a few years, despite the corruption in Nigeria, tribalism, injustice, and harsh treatment they have received from Nigeria, they have blossomed in all aspects of human endeavors (education, commerce, trade, wealth creation, innovation, technology, just name it!). The Igbos have shown that you don’t need any ‘’government’’ to succeed (which is really a misnomer). They can see that the Nigerian state is a stack opposite of what government should be in any part of the world. When a servant outgrows his master, common wisdom dictates that the master should let him go. Igbos have come to that point of realization that Igbos don’t need Nigeria anymore, but Nigeria desperately needs Igbos. An average Igbo man sees Nigeria as Egypt. All they want is the Promised Land. Eldorado! Igbos understand what good governance looks like. As republicans and highly sophisticated people, they know what a democratic leader should look like (still wondering why they didn’t vote Buhari?). They know that when the “Nigerian factor” is taken away from their paths, they will soar more than the eagle. Truth is that Nigeria is an obstacle to an average Igbo man. This is why the Igbos want to leave Nigeria. Believe me, not even an Igbo presidency can change that mentality. It’s like a wife that has exhausted all her patience in marriage. No gift can make her stay. If Nigeria really loves and needs Igbos, let them speedily restructure Nigeria in such a way that the Igbo man may not have any need to care about whatever happens in Abuja or anywhere the central government decides to be. This is the only solution, and it has to be done quickly- in fact, this should be treated as a “Message to Garcia”.
