The difficulty seems to flip flop during a match. For the first half you're doing good and when you get their health below 20% you just cant get a hit in.
I know this game got a lot of hate, but I really enjoyed it. Good graphics, nice soundtrack, great gameplay, and excellent CAS. If we only had more classic characters (since the roster had SERIOUS issues) and better game modes, it could have been the best in the series.
Daniel Babineau I agree. Even though it’s my least favorite game in the series, it was still really fun to play. And Ezio was such a cool guest character. Way better than broken Yoda and Vader.
TBH I find her and Setsuka were the most welcome additions in the series. Setsu with her Troll Draws and Hilda with her fun stance. I'm still wishing they'd be added to SC6 as DLC.
SC2 - Good content - Great gameplay SC3 - Great content - Good casual gameplay but Broken high-level gameplay SC4 - Decent content - Decent gameplay SC5 - Terrible content - Good gameplay (except for how Guard Impact is handled)
SC4 is so goddamn slow, gameplay wise I would say its the worst of the series except for Soul Edge. For me it goes SB - Mediocre Content - Terrible Gameplay SC - Good Content - Good Gameplay SC2 - Good content (better than SC) - Great Gameplay SC3 - Great Content - Fun Gameplay but yes broken at high-levels SC4 - Decent Content - Mediocre Gameplay SC5 - Terrible Content - Good Gameplay (but my god do the new characters and story mode kill the series) SC6 - Good Content - Great Gameplay (not the best in the series and the DLC is so overpriced its not funny but story mode is decent)
Countdown to a PS4 & X1 collection on disc with: - Soul Edge - Soul Calibur - Soul Calibur II - Soul Calibur III - Soul Calibur IV - Soul Calibur V ...please Namco Bandai?
IIRC, because some asshole claimed to have the copyright on the word "Edge" for about a decade, hence why the word "Edge" wasn't in use in titles for a long time. They changed the localization to "Blade" to avoid that malarkey and renamed the series to "Soulcalibur" (one word) to avoid future copyright issues.
@@OilFreeFeathers lol Doesn't matter if we are in 2018 or 2050, for EU and US the game always be called Soul Blade and for Japan always Soul Edge, they made the game with both names and nothing will change that. And care with words kid i don't have your age, go back to your mama
There is still soul calibur lost swords for ps3 that was removed from psn, unbreakable souls for iOS, and Brocken destiny for PSP. That has kratos as a guest character
@@EternalStorm796 several features were removed, it was single player only and it felt like it was a mobile game ported to a console, I mean it prevented you from playing after a while unless you use items that I think where called tickets, to be able to play again or wait a certain amount of time like a mobile game
@@time4manmode945 Ah...yeah..I tried it but never touched it again after 3 fights. I remember it being SC version of Tekken Revolution but that's all I remember. A lot of things were bad ideas apparently.
@@EternalStorm796 I know right?, the reason I played it was because sophitia was playable she is one of my favorite characters to play as, and I thought there was a story related to her in the game but I don't think there was, but hey she's back now in 6.......and she is really cute, rothion is truly a lucky guy
Ah, good ol Ezio Auditore. He is my favorite guest character in the Soul series. I'll definitely miss playing him. He was so much fun and badass. Geralt's cool but I personally like Ezio more.
Say what you will about SC5 But this game had nice stages and music. Ppl need to stop hating the game as a whole and give positive where it's deserved. Viola/Amy Orb style and Z.W.E.I were cool and unique. Music great. Roster was meh .
Everything you say is true. Yet previous games had so much more content and polish that I think we shouldn't tolerate the standing being lowered to this length of laziness and rushness. The last really well developped game was SC2 15 years ago and that's a fucking shame: at the time, the games (at least SC1) were not simply considered as (some of the) best fighting games of all time, but best games ever period. What a fall...
@@SeventhheavenDK if they do bring her back they will be changing her drastically because she was completely busted and is part of the reason why the competitive scene for sc5 died. Anybody who really played the game knows how much of a problem she was.
@@nybethobdilord6912 there is a lot of exaggeration in this. And I continue playing V to the death. However, assumimg that was the case, she will be fixed just like Algol and Hilde in V. And I dont think she needs to be drastically changed neither. Just some adjustements, and SCVI is different, is not like they are just going to copy-paste her I dont care anyway. It doesnt matter if she even gets nerfed to the point of low tier. I will get use to it and get good with her and kick ass, (instead of complaining like most of the competitive scene likes to do) as I always do with the characters I like. Overall, I am glad most people liked her.
Honestly Ezio's probably my favorite guest character in SoulCal history. Link and Vader are cool, but man something about Ezio gets me going. But hey, Geralt's looking pretty cool too. Maybe he'll be the new fav.
still a good game if you can learn to play without guard impacts and the sometimes nauseating backgrounds that shift separate from the backdrop (only on infinite stages) as well as looking at the roster not as clones or "functions" and just take them for face... except the crying mc don't take her or lawful paladin at all JUUUUUUUUUUUSSSSTIIIICE
And not only did it introduce character create, it was the best version of it. 3 is the only SC game where all their clothes didn't halirously break off. 3 is the only one where your created character coul use more than JUST the rosters moves. And they even had a whole mode you can use your character in. 3 was really ahead when it came to character creation.
ZayIvory7 I’m glad that SC6 is bringing back the story mode for create a soul. But yeah, I’ll forever miss SC3’s more varied movesets for custom characters. It made them all fell so different and epic from the regular roster. Maybe we’ll get an HD port some day with online play.
@@claudiopolonia7854 still better than ripping of existing roster's moveset. Hell, some of the movesets are from previous characters like Hwang and Li Long, which we barely see anymore in the sequels.
Max I trust your opinion due to your experience. If you say 6 feels like 2, then I'm buying this on the 19th. The story modes tempted me, but didn't sway me. What you said did.
I got an ad for Castlevania before this video... and I was struck with an idea. Why wasnt there a Belmont as a guest character in Soul Calibur, that would be sweet with the whip, crosses, and holy water attacks.
Ive played sc since dreamcast and i loved every game my only gripe with 5 was the lack of arcade mode... the weird decision to include and exclude popular/unpopular characters and the lack of content updates
@@Christian-rn1ur they made guard impact cost meter and removed a ton of moves and stances. Mitsurugi lost both relic and most stances. To me, v took away everything that made sc fun, namely guard impacts and stance shifting. And the replacement cast were intolerable. Especially the goku monkey replacement for kilik.
This was actually the first game I did online fighting under. I had a blast fighting people with Ezio, Raphael, and my Create-A-Character with the Patroklos style (because Patroklos is a cheeseball asshat). I've often considered this my favorite of the Soul Calibur series, though I feel I should really play II someday. People may go on to say that it "killed the series" or "was objectively the worst one," but to me, this started it all. I don't get online on fighting games as much anymore, but this did get me started.
TheHappy_P0tat0 1. Bad Story Mode. 2. Damage reduction on near-death opponents. 3 Guard impact tied to meter. 4 Arcade mode is very short and doesn't have any endings. 5. Characters speak more and sound dumb. 6 Characters feel like they have less moves (because they do have less). 7. Guard break returning from Soul Edge (Weapon break) - and being invisible leads to defensive play being punished. 8. 2D style double QCF special move inputs in a 3D game. 9. Meter. 10. 'Brave Edge being a poorly implemented type of EX move for only a couple of moves. 11. Game did nothing to evolve the series. 12. Game was released at a time when, with the exception of Street Fighter 4, fighting games were unpopular in general - especially 3D fighters. All those things aside... SC5 is OK. It gets a pass as a good fighting game.
TheHappy_P0tat0 Yea you would absolutely have noticed it. They're all little issues that add up over time. For example, I adored Soul Edge/Blade, and Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast was a huge leap. Soul Calibur 2 managed to make that slightly better while retaining the same feel and added features. Nothing was really 'missing'. There was so much to do in terms of character unlocks and just generally playing the game. I'd never played SC3 or 4, but 3D fighting games didn't transition well into to the 360 and PS3 era - because they felt wonky by comparison to other 3D game genres. I bought an old PS3 about 2 years ago, and when the 3D fighters were on sale I got SC2 HD, SC5 and Tekken Tag 2 (since Tekken Tag 1 was my jam back in the day). Tekken hadn't changed much - in a good way. SC2 HD was like home. But I remember Soul Calibur 5 having mixed reviews... and it was so jarring to get into. While the core game and graphics are OK (but everything has motion blur), it seemed that there was actually *less* content than previous games. Personally, while I used to barely understand the blocking aspect of Tekken (and was garbage at street fighter until earlier this year), I always at least understood that there was a block button in Soul Calibur. And that moving around was an option. But when you start bolting on Street Fighter esque systems to a person who doesn't understand them, it makes parts of the game redundant to many. Why is meter even a thing? And then punishing defence with the Guard Impact meter, means that Soul Calibur 5 can devolve into a game about taking turns to hit each other with safe attacks. In Soul Edge/Blade, damage was very high, so it usually never got to the point of weapon break. One of the best aspects of Soul Calibur was the removal of this meter entirely, meaning that weapons no longer shattered - it fixed a problem with Soul Edge/Blade. But over time I suppose you just get used to these things 😀.
The best thing about fighting games now is that they are nearly all on PC 😆 I think most of these titles would have lasted a lot longer had they not been tied to consoles.
@@joshyeldham most fighting games on PC have shit net code and are bad ports. its a reason why tournaments are prefered and played on consoles instead of on a PC lmao think again. Fighting games were born on arcades and consoles
You know how one way I think Namco could have made Nightmare better after Siegfried got rid of Soul Edge for Soul Calibur? Rather than Inferno or the sword itself taking over the armor and making itself more powerful, what if it resurrected Siegfried's dead father and made him become Nightmare?
Really glad to hear your thoughts at the end of the video, Max. I keep seeing people trash SCV everywhere and keep saying it is the worst of the series, when really gameplay-wise it is one of the better ones. Way better feeling than SCIV, at least. It's story mode does suck though. And the roster is 'bad' in the sense that it replaced series favorites with unlikable kid characters (although from purely a moveset perspective, it actually had an o-k roster).
having only played 2, 4 and 5 of the soul calibur series, my cousin and i had the absolute most fun playing this one. Not sure what it was, but i love it to death.
I liked Elysium too, but as the embodiment of Soul Calibur itself like Inferno is Soul Edge, I wish she had a more unique design instead of just Sophitia in a different outfit.
I still Love the core gameplay of SCV a lot, even though overall SC3 remains my fav (my copy of SCVI hasn't arrived yet). What I liked: Overall a great roster with a few gripes. Game looks and plays wonderfully! Love the Supers being included. Astaroth having two amazing looks (Terminator Astaroth remains a fav) I like this version of Lizard man...and finally something that hardly anyone else says, is that I MUCH prefer Xiba over Kilik.....he has that Monkey King personality and is just such a great goofball/annoyance...I like having Kilik become Edgemaster-like and hone his skills more. What is a tragedy is that Taki was replaced with Natsu...who was pure nails on a chalkboard. Setsuka was fucked over by "I'll carve....my own Steak" and Zaslamel was nowhere to be found...
Patroklos already had a somewhat unique style, don't know why they turned him into a Setsuka clone in Alpha. Never used Natsu, only her style for CaS. Zasalamel was my biggest disappointment and Aeon became my main 5 in V. Despite being a Kratos echo instead of Sophitia. Rather Aeon is using V or IV style, I still want him back along with Algol and Xiba..no hope for Xiba all things considered. Maybe Dampierre. Lol
SC5 is really bad in so many ways and not just because they replaced lot of fan favorites with similar characters that some of them happened to be related to those fan favorites.
As an italian player, I could say... Why didn't the developers a call an Italian voice actor for Ezio so they can get the character talk like an Italian? In Tekken 7, they managed to do so with Claudio
III is still the best for me because it had SO MUCH content offline, easily the most content of any SC game. Tales of souls with multiple paths and hidden bosses etc, Chronicles of the sword, first gam with character creation (with CaS specific movesets), all the standard fighting game modes like survival which devs seem intent on removing these days.
The game is actually better than what people think. They are just upset their favorite character got replaced by someone new. Everything else besides the god awful story the game did well. Gameplay good, decent roster size, good soundtrack, plenty of content. Lets be real though. If your favorite character is one of the ones that got replaced you got some lame ass taste when you got Nightmare, Sirgfried, Yoshimitsu, Astaroth, Raphael, Cervantes, Voldo, Ivy, and Mitsurugi.
But Sophitia, Kilik, and Taki should've never been replaced since they're series staples. Sophitia and Taki have been in since Soul Edge/Soul Blade and Kilik has been in since Soul Calibur 1. Replacing them with characters that suck or are annoying was a terrible idea.
@@staticshock4239 oh I know all that. I just don't care about those characters at all. They were mostly bland to me in comparison to the rest of the cast. Viola in sc5 was basically the equivalent to meta knight in brawl.
@@staticshock4239 the games content was fine. People just looked for something else to complain about due to their disdain for their mediocre characters being replaced. Taki was only liked cuz she was lewd. Soph was a basic bitch and kilik really only had his cool moveset going for him.
Spoken like a true pleb 10 year old that knows nothing about soul calibur. Them getting rid of our favorites since the soul edge days were the least of the problems this train wreck of a game had.
Personally, SCV Nightmare was the best because he was so vicious; fighting him was epic all the time; I lol when you played him brought back some nice memories of my own trials of beating him. And as another poster mentioned, SCV had great music and stages so much atmosphere, I would put it 2nd behind SCIII. SCVI may have the better gameplay which is important but its missing some of the trimmings this one has and vice versa. Can't wait until Friday then i'll have 6 Soul Calibur games in my collection.
I still love III the best; but that's just because of CaS being so good in it; the unique weapon styles for CaS characters being a bit one. Also I legit loved Chronicles of the Sword. Its too bad it had so many glitches that ruined high level play.
Pocky Styx I’m so glad that SC6 is bringing back the story mode for CaS. That was my favorite part of SC3 as well. I will miss the unique move sets though...
I have a dream! Where we can play all 3rd party characters in one Soul Calibur game! No honestly man it would be sick, imagine playing with Ezio, Geralt, Vader, Yoda, Star killer, Heihachi, spawn, Haomaru and 2B. And of course one exclusive for each company Kratos for play station, Link for Nintendo and for Microsoft i think it would be interesting to see Xenua. Just make a smash out of this franchise man!
I know that almost every Soul Edge/Calibur fan prefers 2 above all else, but i think i pick 3 as my personal favorite, after all, this was the one i had more fun and the first one i played after i got my own ps2
And now we reach Soul Calibur V. This was the game that almost killed the Soul Calibur franchise. Where to begin... yeah, Soul Calibur V's saving grace was the Character Creation system. That was awesome but everything else wasn't especially the story. A time skip being one of them, characters being replaced with other uninteresting choices with some having more attention or little to none. Plus three-quarters of the story was cut to meet deadline aka it was rushed to meet a deadline. The time skip didn't help either as it was admitted. Plus the budget and staff was cut mid-development. Basically this game nearly destroyed the Soul series so basically Soul Calibur VI, the game we're getting in 2 days is either going to save the series or let it fail entirely. I already preordered Soul Calibur VI on PS4 and I did so to support the series and to ensure that it doesn't die. Producer Motohiro Okubo has admitted that the damage was done and if the game flops, that's it. In other words, this is the game that nearly killed the series. Seeing Max play it is worth it.
Technically Elias it was 3. It alienated 2 other consoles. So everyone who didn't have a PS2 was out of luck. It was a great game with TONS of single player content, but as Max said, it wasn't all that great from a high level perspective. 4 just felt like a different game entirely. Only things that felt Soul Calibury was the characters. And then they added SW characters which, while I think was neat and all, was way out of left field. SCV just made the game worse. If SCVI doesn't do well it's the end of the series. I've preordered to support them and hopefully get a continuation. The gameplay looks amazing so far. I've seen shots of single player and I'm not super impressed due to the lack of cutscenes, but they've had a very limited budget. I'm hopeful and I know I'm going to enjoy it. I just hope everyone else does.
The way I see it, SC3 is the best for those who've never played Soul Calibur or a fighting game and just want a fun casual experience with a lot of good stories and that one strategy game involved. Then if they feel like they want more, recommend SC2 or SC6 (DLC Optional) both of which are similar but with more interesting story elements. *Spoiler for Casandra's Story in SC6 Below this Point* *Spoiler Territory. You've been warned.* Only have them play SC4 and SC5 just to see the alternate timeline if they've seen Casandra's story from SC6 and are curious of what happened in that timeline. I can't speak for gameplay because I'm not that kind of fighting game player (but it is fun to watch)
AI Nightmare is the biggest PAIN IN THE ASS in this ENTIRE GAME!!!!!!! In Soul Calibur 3, Setsuka was affectionately called "Lady Rage-Quit." Well this game's version of Nightmare was easily LORD Rage-Quit for me!!!!!
Just looking at it, there is one thing to this game, and all those that came before it, that we really took for granted: the loading times. I mean really. If it weren't for the insane loading times on SC6, I'd probably be playing it a lot more. (And for the love of god, don't tell me it's just an Xbone thing)
