@@harrisn3693 My colleagues never worked on F-15's. But from an engineer's point of view F-15's design is more basic, simple and reliable. It's airframe is best in business tho. The earlier Tomcats were powered by TF-30 engines( which was the most unreliable engine in USN's history). The stalling problems of TF-30's alone claimed the lives of more than 100 pilots. Though the later versions were upgraded with GE it was still expensive to fly and definitely not worth the money and energy. F-15's can be milked for another 50 years.

The air superiority fighters are basically designed to be big so that they can carry larger payloads, more fuels and can withstand powerfull engines. And moreover this was built at the time when everything was paper based and computer had a limited role in development. So the sensors during 60's were big when compared to modern standards. Moreover the earlier model was analogue and had no CDS. The basic idea of F-16 project is to build a smaller jet which is cheaper to build, maintain and fly unlike F-14 and F-15. The Super Hornet is compact in design, which provides more space for other jets on an Aircraft Carrier.
