Awesome video, I can't believe I have not seen this as a kid at some point. The F14 is an amazing aircraft, iconic to the US Navy. This jet is as important to 80's kids as the Lamborghini Countach, Star Wars and the Goonies.
You know your at miramar when you walk in to the bases bar and a group of drunken flyboys are all singing "you've lost that loving feeling" on the jukebox
not sure if anyone cares but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times then you can watch all the latest movies on InstaFlixxer. I've been streaming with my girlfriend these days :)
I like the comment that someone posted regarding the F14 Tom Cat. This really was one beast of an aircraft. I truly believe that....if this aircraft could be redesigned with modern day electronics, sensors, radar, and very powerful....engines... including trust.... vectoring, and smart weapons, this aircraft would be a force to recon with.
And yet it would still be expensive to manufacture- *and* maintain. Along with some of the modern features you’ve mentioned. I’m sorry, buddy… but sometimes… you just have to cut costs to save some of your budget.
24:32 That F-14 with the red shark face was from the Sundowners squadron. When my father was on the Kitty Hawk (CV-63), I used to take pix of them every time the families got to go on the ship, or when I'd go on the Tiger Cruises. Some of the best times of my life.
F14 saved million of Iranians people in imposed war with iraq for 8 year .....10 of F14tomcat killed more than 270 iraqy mig ,,thats a unique record in aviation
Thi documentary is a broad-stroke look at the F-14, with generous attention being paid to other Naval aviation platforms against the backdrop of the Vietnam war. A far more interesting documentary would be one that focuses on the role of the F-14 vs that of its replacement bythe F-18 Super-Hornet. The F-14 is considered by many to be the superior aircraft, however, it was the maintenance and procurment costs of the F-14 which decided its fate in favor of the F-18.
I still think F-14 Tomcat was one of the most beautiful fighter jets in history, together with the Raptor and Sukhoi SU-27/30/35.. I especially like those separated engines.. Wicked jet.. We need a modern F-14 ASAP
20 or 25 years ago the first flight sim I bought for my new PC was Chuck Yeager's Air Combat. When fighting MIG 21s I'd light the afterburners in my F-4 and go Mach 1 two or three miles away before turning back at the MIG. I'd do this 2-3 times and I'd wind up with a firing solution and win the battle every time! I don't know how true to reality this was.
R.I.P STAR WARS 1977 - 2012 I work for the state department and there is a guy in our DOD office called James Bond lol I shit you not. All the jokes have already been done lol
I remember during the war between Iran and Iraq, so many of those Migs, SUs, and European jet fighters destroyed by F14s and made a nightmare for Saddam.
The F-14 (I thought) was a great looking aircraft, and for such a large aircraft was very manouverable. (I've seen Top Gun with Tom Cruise and get all my facts from that film)
The F-14 was one of the 'stars' of Tom Clancy's _Red Storm Rising_ (1986) and that book spurred me to become a fan of the aircraft. I find it sad that the F-14's fearsome and graceful lines are no longer gracing the skies on a regular basis.
I like F-14 too, but the F-18 is easier to maintain and cheaper to manufacture than Tomcat. My opinion, F-14 should be left in reserve for the next 15-20 years, as well as F-15 and F-16.
I wish it was still in service in terms of being a fan....but I'm glad it's been put to pasture because the Jets of today are far superior and it's a good thing ...Russia is finally developing some decent jets again. Our new jets like the raptor definitely give us the upper hand over Russia's new jets lol
I remember the US air raid into Tripoli: Operation El Dorado Canyon. We flew in on a SAR mission to extract the pilots of the FB-111 that was shot down...by the time we got there, the Libyans were there; the pilots were dead. We have one helluva a firefight, and recovered one body. It was a sad day.
I wish you guys reading this could have been there with me the day I took out 5 MiGs to become a Navy Ace. There is nothing quite like going Mach 2 with your hair on fire. Then there was the day Goose left me and I was sobbing and crying like a baby screaming talk to me Goose ... Talk to Me. Man those were the days None of you will ever know ... much like the day we took the picture of the MIG 28 inverted. But Wait ... Wait a minute I just remembered ... I’m a TaxiCab Driver in Pittsburg who has never as much as been 100mph with skid marks in my drawers. Actually I’m thinking about a movie I saw years ago. Oh well I’ll catch up with ya later.
Roger Lee Smith What kind of war were we fighting; where we COULDN'T ATTACK OR BOMB NRTH. VIETNAMESE AIRFIELDS?!!!! BUT; THEY COULD DESTROY OURS AT WILL, and tried on many occasions with heavy motors and rockets and whatever else they chose to try. How did we ever think we'd win, with NO PASS THE 50 YARD LINE EVER... rules we had to abide by?!!!!! UNFREAKIN-BELIEVABLE FOLKS.
So glad I grew up in this decade....There was money,Good leadership,Respect for the flag, Respect for our OWN people, but above all,the BEST protection money and honor could produce!!!! MAGA2020!!!! KEEP IT ROLLING!!!!
For all you F-14 Naysayers just like anything Mechanical or Electrical The F-14 Could have been Updated with better parts for longevity, F-14 Still the Best Navy Fighter, Now their Stuck with that Single Engine Turd F-35 Yah that was real Cheap to design What they spent on R&D could have Bought 200 New updated F-14D Super Tom Cats and still have money left over. Politicians aka B.S. Artists need a kick in the Ass. Pilots that flew F-14 and F-18 said they would take the F-14 hands down that's a fact.
Ok so yea tomcats are great planes and the pilots who fly them but wasn't expecting most of the video to be about a4s n skyraiders ive seen there vids of which lessened this vid see the TITLE it should be mostly about other planes but tommcats at the last bit of the end show lol ugh not impressed w the edit of this one love my country n my servicemen but come on vidieo guys get yur shit together
@Ionor Rea's Tech Evolution Archive You would be very surprised, but F-14 CAN WIN dogfight against both MiG-29/Su-27. T/W of F-14B/D is at 0.88 at full power a full fuel load (Normal takeoff weight= empty weight+full fuel= 27,7t). Su-27 T/W with full fuel is 0.91. But the wonder lies in better aerodynamics- F-14 has much less draggy profile, archiving lift/drag ratio of around 15. This number is 10 for MiG-29 and 11 for Su-27. This mean while initial acceleration of Tomcat is slower it can maintain it for longer time than draggy Sukhois and MiGs. The same to turning- F-14B has corner speed around 390-400kts, much higher than sub-200kts of MiG-29. Its sustained turning capability is on pair with Su-27 at around 17deg/s at 10000ft/3000m . HMS is nothing new, in fact they got tested in 70's on Tomcats too but wasn't widespread. The helmet was called HMD or DASH. And indeed Tomcat has far superior radar/missile to any 80's Russian fighter (MiG-31 got PESA but R-33 it carried in 80's has inferior range, speed and is semi-active only until 2000s when it got terminal active guidance) www.hq.nasa.gov/pao/History/SP-468/ch11-6.htm www.f-16.net/forum/download/file.php?id=24629&t=1&sid=dd18fdf06ad7249f00b0b69a303cf7ea i.imgur.com/VKK60YS.png i.imgur.com/PNYr9tG.jpg
@Ionor Rea's Tech Evolution Archive You are such an expert :) 400kts is around 740kph, nowhere close to supersonic range. It is in fact the range where most jet dogfights occurs- trans-sonic range. Instantaneous turn is a double edge sword- you can get your opponent into launch zone faster but as soon as you try to do it you would loose energy and thereby speed. If the missile couldn't do its job or you were under safe launch distance then you are doomed- your opponent would out-accelerate and out turn you with ease. Acceleration and turn ability of Western jets are usually better on alt of 3000m/10000ft and higher. As my graphs point out, at 3000m F-14 would have about the same turn radius as Su-27 which is astonishing for a large interceptor. Combined with better BVR capability 80's F-14B is clearly superior to any 80's Russian jet in most aspects, assuming its pilot can keep its corner speed at 400kts, go vetical whenever needed and not let himself to be lured into low speed turn fight.
Anyway US fired just 3 Phoenix missiles in combat which can hardly be used as a preference. In contrast to it Iranian fired quite a few of them and scored up to 80 hits, 3 of them were confirmed as MiG-25. One Phoenix hit went into history as it destroyed 3 planes at once and damaged one more. That's more appropriate.
I noticed they avoided telling the truth about Johnson. That war hungry S.O.B. sat in the oval office and dictated what targets would allow to be hit and which ones weren't. 99 out of 100 sorties flown by Naval and Air Force were against useless targets. How can they say that the F-4 was the most versatile fighter of that time. It had no guns and only missle's to attack with. It was not a fighter plane at all. It didn't have the moves of the Mig's it was slow and handled heavy. This film isn't very informative anyways truthfully. Who gave the information being told in this video. Jesus the F-4 was not a fighter,
imma have to stop you right there-you are partially correct but mostly wrong in your statements regarding the f-4 not having guns and it not being a fighter. early variants of the f-4 phantom did indeed have no guns and were purely missile carriers/bombers and later on were able to be fitted with up to 3 20mm vulcan gunpods. later variants started with the f-4e phantoms had their noses lengthened so that a nose mounted 20mm vulcan could be fitted thus making the phantom a true fighter/interceptor as it was intended to be
During the IRAN IRAQ war(1980-1988) Saddam lost more than 200 MIGs to Iran's tomcats but IRAN lost only 5 tomcats and 3 of them were crashed due to the pilot's error.
Well I don't know about that. How long did it take them to bring out the first bug ridden F35? Somewhere in the 20 year area? Started in the 90's, declared "ready" in 2015. Billions over budget. That's illions with a "B". Must be because it's so uncomplicated. Somehow during WW2 using pencils and slide rules they managed to accomplish what cannot be done today with computers. Take a fighter plane from concept to production in a matter of months. We basically got into the war when cloth bi-planes were still a thing and ended with Mustangs and fledgling jets. Six years and so many planes of so many designs that worked so well. It took them longer than that just to figure out you might not want to pump exhaust through the pilots oxygen system on the F35
Stevie Jo In its day, the Tomcat was INDEED "THE" MOST BAD ASS STAND OFF LONG RANGE WEAPONS PLATFORM!!! ALSO, REMARKABLY; IN THE TURNING OR VERTICAL DOGFIGHTS!!! NO OTHER airframe can boast or say that with ABSOLUTE checked facts to confirm that statement! When America gets it right... they are FANTASTIC IN THIER PURSUITS! This was one of those times.
How many MiGs were shot down by US fighters? (North Vietnam had only MiG-21 fighters and no bombers). How many US fighters and bombers (including B-52s) were shot down by MiGs over North Vietnam? How many by SAM-2s?
well according to a source the us lost 2,254 fixed wing aircraft from February 1962 to October 1973 in the Southeast Asia theater of operations. Some 1,737 fixed wing aircraft were combat losses, and another 517 aircraft went down in related noncombat operations. Yet the MiG-17s, MiG-19s, and MiG-21s shot down 67 USAF aircraft against a loss of 137 of their own, leaving the US Air Force with barely a two-to-one exchange ratio over the course of the war. So yeah out of 1737 air craft losses 67 were by enemy jets. Basically it means that about 92% of the US aircraft losses were to SAMS a trend we also saw in desert storm where pretty much all but a few exemptions losses were caused by SAMS. source: "www.airforcemag.com/MagazineArchive/Pages/2013/February%202013/0213vietnam.aspx"
LTJG Mike Blue! He's also in Top Gun, flying an F-5 as a MiG simulator, which tells me he won the the Top Gun Trophy #VF84 #AnytimeBaby #JollyRogers #getBONED
It came late for Vietnam, but they were around during many conflict. If we had these during Vietnam they could have cleared the skies, and brought the end of the war much sooner.
It was developed because of Vietnam...that is why it was too late. The Navy took the hard lessons learned from Vietnam and put them into the Tomcat. The most important lesson was the inclusion of a gun. They included all the missiles the F-4 had, upgraded the radar and put in the gun.
NO NO NO the U.S government didn´t want to win, they wanted a long drawn out war that was a total waste of life for both sides. Doubt what i say go find out about the absolute insane rules airforce pilots had to obey about north vietnam missle sights.
@@phorewhoresman1897 Don't know if I'd be putting the P-51 in the same bracket at the Spitfire. Don't get me wrong, brilliant aircraft, and extremely effective once introduced at the back end of the war. That said, the Spitfire served the entire duration, and alongside the Hurricane, successfully fought off the Luftwaffe at its peak. My 3 favourite aircraft (not in any order)= F-14, Lancaster & Spitfire. F-14 because it looks amazing and of course; Top Gun. Spitfire & Lancaster for the above mentioned reasons. Another aircraft that deserves enormous respect is the Zero. Truly outstanding fighter. Had it not been for the lack of design updates and the US capturing one in-tact to discover its weaknesses, I'd say it would have continued to inflict significant casualties until the very end.
Sr-71, then F-14 as my favorites. The biggest reason why I place Sr-71 ahead, is Brian Shul's speed check, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8AyHH9G9et0.html
Marki Faux: Maybe we should threaten your life just like those pilots and see how calm YOU are. I remember playing drums in solo competitions when I was in grade school. I was very nervous trying to play a musical piece for 3 judges and I didn't exactly have a gun to my head. I don't think you have any idea what kind of stress those pilots were facing and how difficult that is to over come. You have the audacity to call these pilots "pathetic" ...? Maybe it's time for you to look in the mirror and realize what a pathetic COWARD you are. By the way, I love your RU-vid channel. I noticed you have zero content. Maybe if you get some extra time, you can post all of your dog fighting videos. I'm sure you have killed more Migs than Randy Cunningham.
Marki Faux: I didn't say that was Cunningham. Obviously he is a Vietnam Ace. You're right... you have some awesome videos just waiting to be uploaded. So upload them for me. I'm officially your third subscriber. So give me some content. I can't wait to poop poop my pants. I'll go stock up on new undies and baby wipes so I can be ready when your awesome videos drops.
I'm just playing a combat sim game called DCS world so I'm learning how to play a video game that happens to be a simulator. I got nervous when those migs were 35 miles out and turned BACK in to intercept, that's so close. In the game I am expecting the enemy to fire a decoy missile at me from those distances to force me to maneuver then fire a second one to finish me while I'm dealing with the first. They got within 10 miles before firing. They'd merge in about a minute or two. I think they held their own well in a dangerous situation where they could have seriously been killed. I'm surprised I actually understood everything that was going over the radio.
Bryon Miller: It is amazing how well some of these simulator games can teach you. I used to play an old flight simulator game called U.S. Navy Fighters. You can find videos of it on RU-vid. I was checking out videos of your DCS game. It looks really good! Air combat is very interesting and I think anyone who has never played the simulator games, lacks the full understanding of it. It is an "energy management" fight.
*SIMPLY THE BEST OF THE BEST AND 'WE THE PEOPLE' ARE GRATEFUL FOR THESE FIGHTER PILOTS AND THEIR COURAGE AND SKILLS TO KEEP THE SKYS FREE FROM THIS EVIL DICTATOR IN LIBYA OR OTHERS AROUND THE GLOBE!!!*
Tomcats are my favourite aircraft ever... but Mig Killer? Depends what kind of Mig. Great chances against the Mig-21, Mig-23 or Mig 25 and Mig 31 if can catch them I don't think a Tomcat have many chances against a Mig-29 in a Dogfight (With pilots at the same level)
Politicians hated the F-14 and Grumman but loved the A-10 despite it's not so impressive combat record. They essentially forced the USN to retire the F-14 by removing funding for upgrades and spare parts acquisition, thereby making it very difficult to maintain the F-14 fleet.
Eh, what did they kill? 2 Migs and 2 Su-22s (or 17s) that maybe did not know they were there? Big clumsy 7.5G interceptor that can't dogfight, with a subpar radar and maintenance problems. F-15s and 16s are the real victors. F-14 is nice looking, but that's about it.
Naval Aviation !!! It’s a shame the USAF and Naval Air are in competition for funds and equipment during peacetime. So currently the us military has 3 versions of the F-35. Air Force F-35A, Marines ’B’ and Naval Carrier the ‘C’. IMO cutting the orders of the F-22 (by a Dem POTUS) was a mistake. Cut defense spending and then ‘Gift’ a few trillion to USA residents because of a virus after telling/ordering businesses to shut down. So CA and NY virtually shut down their states (Dem Governors) and FL stays open and the impact of illness wasn’t effected. VOTE
imagine a tomcat with modern avionics and radar, improved airframe and a new engine with thrust vectoring nozzles plus a bunch of phoenixes and amraams and laser guided bombs. No fucking jet can beat f-14. Maybe they should continue with tomcat like b-52s
Because I'm male and was born in the 70's, I grew up in the age of these large, powerful and dominant US aircraft so I love the sharks teeth on the Tomcats..... it looks proper cool. And..... how suicidal was it for those Libyan dinosaur aircraft SU-22 pilots to attack those F-14's? Talk about bringing a lolly stick to a Phoenix fight! The Mig 23 pair, however, were decent aircraft, pretty decent pilots but not decent enough to beat the F-14's.
F 14 took more abuse as a navy aircraft - carrier landings are brutal. The maintenance on the F 14 had become extremely expensive - reported as 24 man hours of maintenance per hour flown vs. 6 hours for the F 18. The Navy wanted a bird that could war fight without being slowed by the maintenance requirements.
@@joephysics5469 Although true in terms of maintenance requirements, much of which was for the avionics systems...same that is used on F15, F & F/A18, etc..... a budget had been approved to extend the life of the aircraft for 15 years (at a cost of about $15m per plane (about 10% the cost of new) and NA/Grummun already had design work strongly initiated for a new gen F14 when congress enacted the Sequestration Budget cuts......the USN was told....here is the cuts...you figure out what program you want to cut.....USN command chose to end the f14 program...…. the only aircraft designed specifically to protect the USN fleet and 2ndly, the only aircraft that could reach the comm. targets (other than our bombers) during Iraq (without refueling).
The US Navy did not want the Iranians to get the spare parts for the F-14s they bought from US 40 years ago. Also, they wanted the more modernized F-18E Super Hornets to feature a more prominent role. That is why they scrapped the F-14.
@@richardthantzin1229 It was mostly scrapped because of the military industrial complex of bush/cheney years. Lockheed martin got the f-35 on carries now and its much more expensive than the f-14 and less capable.
i know this isnt much consolation but at least we are reviving the phantom program maybe there is hope we can get a revival of the tomcat program in a few years down the road
Don’t forget that the traitor Senator John McCain we don’t say his name, was the one who started the fire on the Forrestal, doing “Wet Starts” to drill the nerves of the deck crew. The percussion wave sent out across the deck knocked a Zuni Missile off of its pylon and it shot across the deck. Several five hundred pound bombs cooked off and blasted holes in the deck into which fuel from a deck mounted tank poured into the ship and burned killing many good men. It’s my opinion this was a purposeful attempt to fuzz over the attempted shrinking of the USS Liberty communications ship in order to cajole an attack on Egypt from the US by the Israelis, only a month earlier. Admiral McCain, was the father of John, and needed a dirty deed done dirt cheap. There.
Horribly done video. Too much random footage (with the same dubbed-in jet sound used for every scene) that wishes it could relate to the narration. Hardly anything about the F14. Incredibly boring, had to keep skipping forward hoping for something actually interesting.
Just don't understand one thing; If F-14 was so good, why it got scraped to no more. never again. In military, with weapons like that ( the best or whatever), you stick as long as possible. So much cheese and cheap propaganda.
as a pure ground strike plane i have to agree with you in regards to the a-10 but in terms of air superiority that goes to the f-14(and later on down the road to the f-15,f-16,and f-18s)
The biggest baddest aircraft I ever saw... This plane looked like it belonged in a Star Wars movie, taking on Imperial Tie Fighters! It made any Soviet MiG look like a toy! Yes there are more advanced aircraft today that are more maneuverable, faster and stealthier... but none of them look as cool or menacing as this bad boy did. We'll never see another aircraft in the world like this again.
WTF, the Navy just dumped the trashed planes over the side into the ocean? Like it is some sort of giant garbage can??? It's one thing to get shot down over water, but to treat the oceans like a dumpster is kind of... disturbing.
The Super Tomcat/proposals would have been a force to be wreckened with. Thrust vectoring, new radar, updated glass cockpit, etc etc. The range these things had, the speed. They miss this airplane. China and Russia have true interceptors. We don't
