When the CBU 105s were finally introduced for the F-16 we knew had to do something fun with them. As such we went to the Persia at War server and found a perfect opportunity to strike 3 objectives with the 5 F-16s. Although it was night time, it provided us with an amazing look at the CBUs at work.

man smart cluster munitions is among the more scifi things we've done recently. i can't believe they turned flying hockey pucks into antiarmor weapons.

@@ForeverDoubting They were EXTREMELY successful. That one strike, by one aircraft, destroyed almost a battalion of armor in a single pass. They just haven't been used more frequently because A ) they are expensive, and only limited amounts were made, B ) that limited amount is being kept in reserve in case of Really Big War, C ) Just because the US maintains cluster bombs in stock in case of Really Big War, does not mean that the US thumbs their nose at international conventions by using them all the time when they can accomplish the desired target effects with conventional munitions, and D ) there have not been any targets in recent years that justify their use. CBU-97/105 is designed for massed formations of armor. Recent wars have been against mostly small groups of insurgent infantry in urban areas, with only the occasional (usually unarmored) enemy vehicle, which are typically deployed as single vehicles, not formations. Against that kind of target, a Hellfire or Maverick (or even just an LGB) is a more appropriate weapon choice.

I think it is not ok to use "war crime" as click-bait or to make cheap jokes about (simulated) war crimes. Especially, since similar incidents happened in real life.

@@ayeidoucareau5014 Okay fair, but like, not only were no actual civilians harmed in the making of the video but I don't think DCS even models civilian casualties. I hope nobody actually thinks it's acceptable to drop (even smart) cluster muntions into urban environments.

@Makky-Kat Yes, it is a simulation only. Still I think the title of the video and some jokes are a bit insensitive, considering that currently so many real people have to flee because of war crimes.

It ain't real. It's better to acknoledge it with a joke than pretend they'd be fine with this IRL. Policing jokes claiming offence on behalf of others is much more sinister.

The U.S. is not even supposed to be making treaties at all. George Washington warned against getting involved in treaties when he left office of the presidency. Warned nothing but trouble if the U.S. got involved with the intrigues of Europe.

If you're talking about Viggen's BK90, you're underestimating the 105's severely. The BK90 is like a AGM-154A JSOW. It's got gliding guidance, but the submunitions are unguided. They're also pretty damn weak against heavy armor, if not completely pointless. The 105's have guided skeets which are designed for armor. If we ever get the AGM-154B JSOW with guided skeets, that's another story.

@@skatterpro I was talking about the GB-6 with MM-06, essentially the JSOW-B on the JF-17. And no one operates the 154B, so that's never coming.

Enjoying the Viper content, kinda did the reverse. Started with the Viper as that was what I was excited and waiting for, then feel pretty confident in it and awaiting other features so went to the A-10C II and following the 0-Hero guides. The helmet designating the targeting pod is such a huge advantage in the Hog, can't wait for it to be implemented on the Viper

@@DoradoFever I believe the term used was "mark points", which I'm led to believe are done via HMCS. I doubt we'll get a full implementation, but just the ability to look over and make a point will be a reasonable bare-bones start.

@@JETZcorp that is a different system. The JHMCS A/G mode is different than mark points, similar to how you can mark a point in the A-10 while not necessarily slewing the targeting pod, but allows others in your flight to see the point. Just an over simplified explanation.

Assuming all 5 F16s loaded all 4 CBUs, good ole America would probably be more concerned that the load out alone costed upwards of 14 million dollars, rather than the war crimes committed.

That's 3.5 million dollars compared to the cost of all those targets they hit. And the cost of trying to take out those targets with more conventional means. The cost analysis definitely views this favorably, even with the destroyed F-16 and dead pilot.

I prefer the viper to the FA18. To me, it feels more ‘pure’. Sure, it can’t carry quite as much but since the recent updates it can carry enough and do enough different task types. I find it less confusing and I don’t like the moving map so I always either switch it off or turn it so dark so I can see the HSD. Horses for courses, but for me, the F16 is also much better looking.

The viper can carry way more atg stuff, f16 has triple pylons, f18 only has dual ones and with some weapons we cant even carry 2 for 1, we can only carry a max of 4 mavs, f16 can carry 6, so dont feel to bad ;)

bit of a late comment, been learning the f16 and something that ive noticed, you can do a very effective pop-up strike with the cbu105, fly at 100-200 ft above the ground and when your time till drop gets to 10 seconds, go to 10 degrees upwards and hold release, you can do multi launches as well, instantly ruining any sam site

The GB-6 SFWs on the Jeff are even more of an easy mode: Slightly more pucks, and they're gliders, giving you something like 30-40 nautical miles of range from altitude. =)

These munitions are "banned" per se.. The treaty only agrees that if the manyfacturer cant provide a >90% of destruction of all "missed" sub-munition, signataries of the treaty can't used them It's a tricky "legal" thing ! They basically say "we dont use submunitions, we banned them" but in reality they use them if manufacturer guarantees them (and in case of fail, responsability is ook by manufacturer and not a sovereign state that can be courted in UN councils) "Modern problems require ...legal solutions !"
