I wasn’t ready for how epic the F-16 reveal was gonna be.

For those who don’t know since Phly didn’t show it, there is a little bit of lore added in at the end of the reveal trailer, don’t skip it, it’s after the credits!

The Russian/English combo intro honestly was the most underrated part of the whole video. Great "duality of man" type vibes.

Once I saw the shadow of the intake my mouth immediately fell open. I became the F-16. Also very interested to see how the vortex lift generation gets factored into a plane with as complex aerodynamics as the F-16. We already have delta wings but this thing has well documented performance. I hope they can match up to it.

The f-16 It's something I was never expecting to be added to war thunder but here we are

The F-16 we are most probably getting is the F-16A which uses a Pratt & Whitney F100 which produces 24,000 lbf with afterbuner, this engine is also the one found in early F-15's. The F-16A is also 23,000 lbs so it achieves a more than a 1:1 thrust ratio.

It's only a matter of time now until we get stuff like the F15-A and even probably up to the Strike Eagle variant, maybe alongside that some SU27 variants of even the Su33. Also the Eurofighter and Rafale are probable now because the beginning of their respective dev cycles began in the late 80's.

The vents near the leading edge of the wing root on the MiG-29 are there for unimproved airfield use. When they're open the main intakes are closed to help prevent ingestion of FOD.

SO excited for the F 16 and the Mig 29. My dad may learn to fly the F 16 soon. I'm still waiting for the F 18, which my dad flew in the Marines. He now flies A4 Skyhawks, and is learning the F-1 Mirage. He trains the Air Force in air to air and air to ground combat of all kinds, and he may learn the F 16 soon, as the company he works for got around 40 block 60s.

2:41 the Mig-29 shoots at what I think is a sea harrier so that might be added as well! It is definitely a type of Harrier anyways

F-16 has a weight to power ration of over 1, meaning it can climb straight up and still gain speed

The F16 is awesome and has a special spot in my heart. It is the one that started my love for aviation by getting introduced to a real one (touching it) and flying it in a real airforce simulator with 2 instructors. What an awesome start and great memory...... Getting all warm and fuzzy over here :D

I work on F100-229 engines. The engine on the F-16 in the trailer is an F100-229. I can tell by the probe on the nose cone of the engine 3:25, the flamholder in the augmentor 3:34, and the augmentor nozzle 3:32. So yes, 28-29K lbs of thrust in augmention.

You looked at the thrust without afterburner for the MiG-29 phly. With afterburners, it has a combined thrust of almost 40k Ibs.

At this point, I think War thunder REALLY needs to implement a gen split in the tech trees. There is an absolutely OBSCENE grind to get to the new shiny things they always show off, and the upper level tech trees ARE populated enough to get away with starting at ww2/immediate post-war jets as reserves, then traveling forward.

As far as I understand the model f-16 shown (A model) uses a Pratt and Whitney engine that puts out ≈ 29k lbs of thrust at full ab but later models are able to put out 32k + with the newer General Electric motors.

The later Viper blocks especially 30 block are the ones with the insane P/W ratio. Not that the A model is a slouch but it won’t be as good as those Wiki numbers.

F-16A will use the early PW F100, rated for 23,500. It’ll have similar acceleration to the MLD, but not greater. The MiG-29 however Carrie’s two of those monsters, giving a combined thrust of 36,000 lbs. The 29 will be the monster power to weight monster. The F-16 will be a cross of an F-5 and a GR.7, still an animal, but the 29, she’s different.

The F-16's gross weight is actually arround 20 000 lbs , and the gross weight shown in wikipedia is with 100% internal fuel. So with minimal fuel the Viper has a thrust to weight approaching 1,5. This aircraft is an absolute animal

btw in the wikipedia article you were looking at a f-16c block 50, thats way more advanced than the f-16a which has 23,830 lbs of thrust while afterburning, this of course makes it a lot more balanced against the mig-29 which has an astronomical 18,340 lbs of thrust per afterburning engine but it weighs more than the f-16.

Had a ride in an F-16 painted as an Aggressor, A/c 86-0041, after i did the first three aggressor schemes for the F-16. Ride was an absolute blast, will never forget watching Nellis shrink so fast on the vertical climb after takeoff.

To be fair, you’re looking at the block 52 engine. Actually it’s got more like 10,000 kgs of thrust on the variant we’ll have in game. Still completely insane though.

The F-16 was allegedly the first 100% vertical climb capable jet to be produced when minimally loaded from sea level (ref. Falcon 3.0 user manual).

Unless they're adding another one, they've yet again dropped the ball for Britain with the tornado. The one in the trailer is the CAS variant with only 2 ir missiles which simply can't compete top tier. They needed to add the f3 (Italy also used this one) which was overall improved with more power, better handling, better radar and better A2A loadout. As it stands Britain's best top tier fighters will still be the Phantoms and Harrier for another patch.

we are getting the F-16A (Block 10 and 20) which has less thrust than the early MiG-29 variants. you were looking at the F-16C (Block 50 something) which is of course way ahead

The F-16A is getting F-100-PW-200 engines with 23,900 lbf of thrust with afterburner and empty weight 16,300 lb. This means it should accelerate about as well as a harrier.

The AAM on the MiG-29 9-13 is the R-73A (NATO AA-11 Archer). This can somewhat be compared to the AIM-9M. (For all people that say the R-73A is more like the AIM-9X or IRIS-T, no this is not. That would be the R-74M2).

@PhlyDaily Ther F-16 was the first fighter design to use the concept of excess thrust in it's design phase. What that means in simple terms is that at a given altitude and speed you have X amount of thrust beyond that needed to counteract drag. The bigger X is the more you can maneuver whilst losing no speed. Off the top of my head and without trying to find my book with the figures in i believe the export version of the F-16 could pull around 6G's at medium altitude and just under mach 1 without bleeding any speed in the turn. The export version was of course less capable than the full fat version.
