Being an F-16 crew chief at shaw and Osan for the past 6 years I’d like to say the paint chipping is very accurate
@GeneralPelleScaleModels
@GeneralPelleScaleModels 11 месяцев назад
That’s always nice to hear, thank you very much for your comment. As someone who never saw a f-16 in real life I had to do a bit of guesswork where chipping may occur. And I was really unsure if they occur at all (nearly ruined the build when removing some of them due to using the wrong varnish, but that’s another story).

Give it a go. I think we probably life now in the golden area of scale modeling, with all these fancy new molding techniques, 3d printing and all the accessories available. It’s quite fun to mess around with these. Happy building.

A little tip for everyone for realism... the top cover for the instruments pod and the cockpit surfaces in general is YELLOW when the black paint is worn through! The same goes for the air frame. This is because the aircraft is coated with a YELLOW or Light BLUE-GREEN protective surface treatment for the aluminum. You seldom have wear so deep it gets through the paint and the surface treatment. Even if you did, these is almost no chance there is zero yellow (or blue-green) and all silver in the chipping and wear. This is true even for very heavily used and worn down F-16As going in for their F-16V (aka Block 20 AM) overhaul at AIDC Taiwan. Don't take my word for it. Take a look at photos or ask anyone on the flight line.

Hehe, yes I like them dirty :) Glad you liked it, mate. I’m always playing with the idea to get a jet in 1/32, the details on them must be amazing. But space is unfortunately an issue, even though the f-16 isn’t the biggest plane in the world. Happy building, hope it turns out great!

This is a real "trust the process" video. 4 or 5 times, I thought, "well, he's ruined it now!" It all comes together in the end. I like the weathered look, but it's little too heavy for me. I feel you could back off a little and it would still have a nice used look, rather than "decommission me please" characteristic.

@GeneralPelleScaleModels Год назад
Hehe. Had to lough after reading your comment. Actually I don’t have much of a planned process, it of course looks like this when cutting it down to a 40 minutes long video. I’m actually still in a phase where I try out thing, rather then a real expierienced modeler who did this a 100 times already. And yes, I admit, I like it dirty. Maybe next time I’ll get a more subtle result. Thanks for the feedback :)

I like to allow artistic freedom in models. As for your chipping, admittedly its overdone if we're talking realism however it really gives depth to the model and artistically and aesthetically I love it. Because of this added depth it doesn't take away from the realism because I'm sure if you didn't maintain an F16 then you're probably going to get that kind of wear and tear. The model feels real and I love it.

As for your camouflage technique on a 1/48 you can free hand those large 2 tone colors. Little practice and your on your way. If you need sharp edges and have use tape make sure you prime the model so the tape don't lift the first paint coat and keep the paint thin around the tape edges so you don't get paint ribs like on the lepord. Your builds look great keep up the good work. Pluss I'm enjoying your music. ❤
@GeneralPelleScaleModels
@GeneralPelleScaleModels Год назад
Thanks again. Free hand isn’t really for me, because my hand is a bit shaky. So I’ve to stick to some form of protection for the other paint layer. I think the blu tack variant works very well for soft lines. As for the primer: I always use one, but not always show it in the videos (but at least mention it). On the leopard I just sprayed to much into the angles, but I sand them down (didn’t show in the video either). Yeah, never the less, wasn’t the best paint job.

@Hafer_

Personally chipping like that even on modern planes is perfectly fine. I've found out that people seem to appreciate way more a model that gives off the feeling of realism rather than actual realism if that makes sense. On subjects such as late WW2 Luftwaffe, for example, we get planes that were introduced way too late so they saw very little action or prototypes that never even left the factory so they'd have no weathering at all. If I were to build one of these and wanted a fully realistic look it'd be a bit difficult for it not to look toy-ish because there would be no faded panels, very little dirt, no exhaust stains, no marbling and of course no chipped paint, so pretty much none of the things that make you think "Wow, it looks like it's real" when you look at a model.
@GeneralPelleScaleModels
@GeneralPelleScaleModels Год назад
Thank you very much for your comment. You meantion some really good points here. I also think that models without much weathering have usually a too toonish look to them. Perspectives also plays a important part, but our brain is usually not fooled that easy. Glad you liked the chipping. I honestly still not sure if I should like it or not. But the more I look at the finish model I begin to think that was probably not a bad idea. At least not as bad as I thought after doing it. Glad other people like it, that makes it easier for me to like it, too.

This is an art! I have my Tamiya F-16 1:48 sitting and waiting. It will be tough to do anything even close to your work. But since I served IDF as a ground technician at t he airbase where we had squadrons of AH-64 and F-16 I can say they were kept in much better shape :)
@GeneralPelleScaleModels
@GeneralPelleScaleModels 3 месяца назад
Hehe, I believe you that, I guess the US military keep their airplanes also in better shape then I portrayed them. But as you mentioned, it’s kind of an art. And I personally think these models look better with a bit of dirt and grime on them. It’s the scale effect which makes a model look like a toy when it’s to clean, but as said, that’s just my opinion. Funny, I’m currently building an Apache helicopter (but with a dark green camouflage). I’m glad you liked my build and I wish you happy building yours. It’s a great little kit :)

Very nice and informative video. Do you thin the oils with white spirits? Also, what paint do you use for the chipping? I would have loved to see how you painted the jet exhaust.
@GeneralPelleScaleModels
@GeneralPelleScaleModels 8 месяцев назад
Glad you liked the video. I usually use oil paints directly from the bottle when doing the dot filter technique (or streaks with oil paints). But I moisture the brush in thinner when blending the oil paints. When I need a thin oil like color, I just use enamel washes or filters (even thinner). That said, I never use white spirit for anything. I work in a closed room, so smell is a thing, that’s one of the reasons why I use odorless thinner. It’s basically white spirit with the aromatic components removed. That makes it also more cold then white spirit, which helps protecting the paint underneath. As far as I can recall, I used the same color for the chipping then for the part that is under the cockpit (on the fuselage). This kind of implies, that the aircraft was painted in the grey color (which was used for the chipping) and then the dark grey on top. Unfortunately the videos I recorded for the exhaust where pretty blurry, that’s why they aren’t part of this build video. You can check my other aircraft builds, they include the exhaust part. The F-18 has a pretty similar exhaust and technique I used there, but it’s one of my old builds, actually one of my first builds ever. So it doesn’t have the same quality in terms of the models and the video :)

I'm confused by the paint scheme in the booklet you get. I'm doing the A colour scheme. Looks like you done scheme C. Anyway the booklet says nose cone and underneath f16 are AS-26 light ghost grey but pictures on box show nose cone and underneath the f16 are different colour. Not sure how to proceed with colour scheme
@GeneralPelleScaleModels
@GeneralPelleScaleModels 7 месяцев назад
Yeah, I remember that struggle. I talked to a service worker for f-16 in service, and he said that the nose color for these birds where all over the place, often repainted. Anyway, for my build I searched for pictures of that exact airplane and had chosen a color that matches the photos (well, more or less, photos have their limitation). I suggest you do the same if you want to proper replicate that paint schema.

@GeneralPelleScaleModels I'm doing block 32 scheme. If I read that correct the nose cone is same colour as the underneath of the plane. Outside the cockpit and vertical stabilisers are medium grey, main fuselage is gunship grey and tail is black.

Does anyone know if the Hasegawa 1/48 F-16 is fairly similar to this Tamiya version? I just bought a H. version but dont see any videos of it. also at 17:20, what did you use for the Plastic Cards since I too wish to make the flying version of this plane. thank you!

@GeneralPelleScaleModels Год назад
I can’t answer the question about the hasegawa kit, hopefully somebody else can answer that. But the plastic cards used are from green stuff world, I think it was 3mm thick once (doesn’t really matter as long as they aren’t to thick). They are called ABS Plasticard on their website. But honestly you can use any plastic card for this job, ak interactive or Tamiya also produces them.

That’s an airbrush stencil from ak interactive. But if you buy a new one anyway I would recommend to get some from ammo mig / Uschi. They are made of brass and much more durable (but you loose some flexibility)

Thanks. Mr surfacer 1500 pink as primer and then Tamiya flat red as top coat. I would always suggest using a pink or white primer when painting red. I also did some preshading on that part, mixing Tamiya red with some drops of black. Be careful tho not to choose a to dark preshading color.

ICM sells the black part as Aircraft Display stand (comes in three sizes, transparent, I painted it black), the wood base is from super-hobby, the f-16 batch is from eBay.

@@GeneralPelleScaleModels Thanks for the reply. I just found it very hard to focus on what you were doing and trying to read at the same time. I had to pause it quite a bit which added to the length of the video. Is there a reason why you wouldn’t want to narrate over the video?
@GeneralPelleScaleModels
@GeneralPelleScaleModels Год назад
@@justinschraeder8924 thanks again for your feedback. Great feedback indeed. I’m always a bit unsure how long those subtitles should be. But you pointed also out things that I also dislike about this particular video style. If you look at the few videos I released so far the style has changed 1 or 2 times. That’s because I was, or I still am, in a learning phase when it comes to video making. The first video on this channel was also the first video I’ve ever made in my life. At the moment I’m in the transition of changing the style yet again, probably for the last time. I really don’t have the voice to narrate over this kind of videos, that’s something I can’t change. I recently came across a bigger Japanese RU-vidr (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JbfP6UHeNwQ.html) you might be familiar with (due to he have a much larger audience anyway). I really like his way of shooting his videos, so calm and relaxing to watch. So I’m thinking about going more into this direction for the future. Thus said, I’ve still a few builds in production that are recorded in the old way.

Los f16 reales no están tan sucios.
@GeneralPelleScaleModels
@GeneralPelleScaleModels 11 месяцев назад
No podemos. Y entonces volvemos al mismo punto: al final depende de cómo le guste al artista, es su F-16 al final del día.

@@paulhargreaves1497 Hi there, I want to thank you all for sharing your thoughts and perspectives. This platform thrives on its diverse viewpoints, and it's a testament to what makes our community unique. My primary focus here is to create and discuss content centered around the artistry and craftsmanship involved in scale model building. I understand that your concerns about the Quinta Studio decals are rooted in global geopolitical issues. It's unfortunate that actions taken by governments can have ripple effects on businesses and consumers, especially when they might not be supportive or in control of these actions. However, it's important to clarify that my choice to use Quinta Studio decals was purely based on their quality and detail, and was not intended to reflect support or endorsement of any political stances or actions. In fact, these decals were purchased in 2021, prior to the onset of the conflict. It's likely that many of us, possibly even yourself, have bought products from Russia before the war, as we often make our choices based on the quality of products, not the politics of the country they come from. In retrospect, I understand that it may not have been the wisest decision to promote this product given the current geopolitical climate. I truly apologize if this has caused any confusion or discomfort. I'd also like to mention that, in this very build, I've used aftermarket products from Reskit, a Ukraine-based company. In addition to Reskit, the stand you see featured in the video is from ICM, another Ukraine-based company. Just as with the Quinta Studio decals, my decision to use Reskit and ICM products is based on their quality and the value they bring to the build, adding a level of detail and realism that truly elevates the final result. In my stash, I have a large selection of Reskit items, as well as from Miniart and other companies, all attesting to the high standard of scale model products that come from Ukraine. For this F-16 alone, I invested around 80 dollars in aftermarket kits from Ukraine. In contrast, the Quinta Studio decals, purchased prior to the outbreak of the conflict, were a comparatively smaller investment of around 15 dollars. An order I had placed for a set of ordinance from Reskit ended up being unused due to their complexity and some parts being damaged during shipping, but this doesn't negate their overall quality or my intent to use them. These selections are based on the merit of the products themselves, not the political situations of their countries of origin. And in this particular case, it's evident that the bulk of my investment went towards Ukraine-based companies. My hope is that we can continue to appreciate and support quality craftsmanship, wherever it originates from, while being mindful and respectful of the broader global context. Our shared hobby indeed exists within real-world contexts and implications. We often find ourselves navigating a delicate balancing act. On one hand, we have our genuine love for the "craft-the meticulous assembly", the precise painting, the joy of seeing a miniature replica take shape in our hands. On the other hand, we're contending with the larger, often complex, global situations at play. We should recognize that a large portion, if not the majority, of our hobby revolves around replicating models that, in reality, serve military purposes. Tanks, warplanes, warships - these are all tools of warfare, engineered for destruction. Yet, as scale modelers, we find a certain beauty and intrigue in building these miniature versions. Our interest doesn't lie in glorifying warfare or violence. Instead, we revel in the challenge of assembling intricate components, capturing the historical accuracy, and the artistic representation. We appreciate the engineering marvel behind these machines. It's about learning and understanding history, not endorsing the actions that took place. However, my choice to use the Quinta Studio decals, as said, is about their quality and detail, and not a reflection of support or endorsement of any political stances or actions. It's always important to remember that behind our hobby there are real-world contexts and implications. If anyone has concerns or thoughts about the content I'm creating, I'm more than open to listen and discuss. That said, I kindly ask everyone to maintain a respectful and understanding attitude toward each other, even if we disagree on certain topics. It's crucial that we focus on our shared love for scale modeling and strive to keep this platform a positive space for everyone. Peace.
