@@johnnyl.4468 Probably none, the metallurgy alone was decades ahead, then the flight computers are pure magic by comparison, they might figure out jet engines quicker, but it would take years to decipher how the f22 functions.
That went surprisingly well for the P-51. Of course this was the best scenario for it, but to see that the P-51s strengths still match some of the best modern day aircraft is truly impressive.
In WW2 German pilots in the invasion of Poland were told hit the polish bi planes on the ground, do NOT get in a dogfight with them because they can turn on a dime.
@@GVK-jm9sg that was extreme over confidence on the part of the F22 pilot. One thing I was always told by old WW2 pilots I was friends with (RIP). There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are very few, old bold pilots.
First time viewer and I have to say I’m glad dude was persistent. I’ve always wondered about WWII craft vs modern gen. Subscribed now in the hopes for a P-38 Lightning (11:1 kill ratio in the Pacific Theater) vs anything modern.
This shit won't work. P-51 is somewhat agile and capable of dogfight. P-38 was good only because they have been used it in big masses and when they had an advantage of speed.
@@MariaCorrea-mr2gy So you're giving the P-38 all the advantages? If I was piloting F-35 against P-38, I'd say "screw you" to the "turn only" rule and just climb high and then dive down at the P-38. It can't keep up in climb, and neither against a diving jet.
Yep. I didn't understand why the Raptor wasn't using his main advantage (other than the Sidewinders) of speed to make slashing attacks on the Mustang. Come in at speed, take a shot and then climb. The Mustang shouldn't be able to match the climb.
@@longshot7601 Its like someone with an AR-15 tried to do a spinning jump quickscope, tripped, and someone ran up and stabbed him. " See!!!! knives are just as deadly as a battle rifle!"
I just got to see both an F-22 and a P-51 flying in formation together a few months back at an air show at Ellsworth Air Force Base here in Box Elder South Dakota. That was the coolest thing I've ever seen. It made me sooooo happy!
The Raptor intercepting the p-51 probably cost more than the p-51 itself I looked it up and today the p-51 cost around 9 times as much, but producing it cost 7 times less than the missile.
the pilot was more expensive than both though, which is why you don't see countries swarming each other with the 3000 black jets of allah and bankrupting the enemy over air-to-air missile costs
GS is the epitome of "It's not the plane it's the pilot" After dunking on the entirety of the DCS catalog with the F22 you turn around and dunk on the F22 with a freaking warbird What can't you do?
The moment where you were like "my engine isn't dead so I should be good to land" *next clip cuts to the 51s engine seizing and sully big eyes* 😂 I haven't laughed that hard at a video in awhile. You've got yourself a sub sir lol
The damage in the engine probably lead to a overheat, that lead to a catastrophic failure, probably by some piece that broke and all engine went jamm. I saw something like this in a car, it's scary AF. Sully clenched so hard, probably could make diamonds with the pressure.
@@reboundrides8132 This. A lot of people here dont realize there had to be parameters for this fight limiting the raptor. For instance in a rate fight with the p51 hit the afterburner get ur 500knts and go vertical, fights over for the p51. Same thing from the start. On the merge hit the afterburner go vertical stall the p51 and roll over. Definitely limits set on the raptor
The random rolls you're getting in the turn are accelerated stalls. You can minimize them, and decrease your turn radius by using flaps. The flap extension speed for the first notch is 450 mph IIRC. If you go vertical or you're trying to get some energy back, get rid of them, but otherwise those are invaluable. Source: flight instructor.
Ah thanks for the info dude i have the same problem but i could find a way to search it i have one more slight problem if i put my flaps im lossing too much speed and i could stall out and not able to recover it falling like a leaf although i know the counter vertical stabilization in the left or in the right respectively
I would imagine that the same could apply in something like IL-2 right? it is also very highly simulated so I have to imagine such factors should be similar.
@@commandergeokam2868 if you're slowing down that much, you need to unload the wings, defeat the stall, clean up the flaps if necessary, and get some energy back.
@@wruenvadam yeah, it works. Hell, it works in warthunder. Flaps artificially reduce AoA at the cost of energy, and so they allow for you to continue turning when you would normally stall due to airflow seperation.
No way... I damn near jumped out of my seat watching you hose down a F-22 the last round. I’m absolutely dying laughing 🤣 you are a flying cheat code GS
@@flyingscotsman9657 One Vulcan has about double the rate of fire as 4x20mm cannon on a FW-190 A6 for example. Half a Vulcan is still a lot of firepower, even if the muzzle velocity is 30% lower ;)
How cool was that first dog fight, it was like a movie, enemy makes a mistake and crashes but wounds the pilot, while bleeding out and trying to circle to the airfield the engine cuts out and glides to a landing with damaged gear! Love it!
That's awesome. Seeing two planes, the best of their times, in a dogfight. It's legit challenging your grandfather to a dogfight. This matchup had sentimental value to me. Great flying.
@@dylan4972 Not to mention the soviets Yak-3 which was outstanding in dogfights it probably had the best turning maneuverability than any other aircraft. The p-51 was very good and it’s multitask jobs wether it was tankbombing or dogfighting it sure was good at for it
As a dogfighter? Probably the F4U, or spit, maybe one of the german prototype push pullers. The warbird was a long range heavy escort fighter, a bit hindered in flight performance by this necessity.
I'll be honest: I have no idea how you figured out a guns solution on the fly for a F22. It flies faster than anything you'd ordinarily need to lead with those .50 cals, and the .50s need to lead more than the higher velocity 20mm. The fact that you put trigger down for about a second, watched the tracers, and found a guns solution is honesly kind of ridiculously incredible. Even if he lost sight, I imagine a lot of otherwise competent P51 players would have alerted the Raptor pilot with a few misses and caused him to jink.
@@GrowlingSidewinder Luck is what others call skill when they don't have any. It was a great shot from a very good pilot, take it for what it was GS :D
raptor pilot made a big mistake going nose high and staying slow after he lost sight. should've gone full burner and gained speed before climbing. staying slow is the only time a warbird would've have a chance against a raptor.
I think you're gunnery skills are amazing, but you're killing me with the rising turns! Even if the P-51 needs an alt advantage, it's made more as a strike and runs, so forcing the F-22 into a diving turn would have given you the energy to return to the original altitude a bit. Obviously, you did great regardless lmao, the veterans would be proud
Round 1 face plant was a $300 million mistake. I love it. Your skills GS is amazing. Nobody has a chance against the F22 but you turned him into a lawn dart. Great landing, you walked to the hospital. Round 3 was beautiful too.
In my humble opinion, a definite top 5 in the most entertaining category of your video's. Love the "ok, here we are on the deck ..... in a rate fight with a raptor" enough said! Good job Bud
I'd love seeing a nicely done Douglas A-1 Skyraider for something like DCS. Would fit well with a lot of the Vietnam era stuff. Give you some fun ground attack, and some desperate defensive dogfights.
2 of those did kill 1 MIG in Vietnam. It’s a History Channel ‘Dogfights’ episode, if I recall correctly, (NOT titled ‘Long Odds’, my error is corrected by O-50-50 below), The episode was titled ‘gun kills of Vietnam’.
@@Man0War I mean I don't know what it's like in dcs world but in x plane I usually fly a little under the glideslope and pitch up more. Honestly once you get a good pitch, usually around 10-15 degrees and maintain that pitch just open and lower the throttle to gain or lose speed while constantly descending and maintaining that 10-15 degree pitch idk if that made any sense
@@Man0War I wasn't good either when I first started, I just days and days and days of just landings, until finally I was getting the hang of it. it's really all a matter of practice until you get it right kind of thing.
@@ian_lewono apparently the p51 had a tighter turning circle and the best turning plane was the De Havilland Mosquito - ultimate multi role aircraft I looked it up on google and its mixed answers between the spitfire, p51, mosquito, yak 3, etc. So I'm guessing at low altitude the spitfire was the better Turner, and at high alt the p51 was the better turner? Don't really know
@@ricksanchez8469 no, they were all about speed, not turn fights but speed that's why they sent out the f4u instead of the p51, cuz it was all about energy in the pacific, not dogfights
@@kingviper3444 even now if like a wwi biplane we're to do a turn test against a modern jet I think we all know who would win If you don't check out GS MK2 video on the Fokker Dr1 triplane pulling a cobra
Do you realize the cost to effectiveness ratio from this? For one F22 we could just have 185 Mustangs and totally dominate!! The be real though, pride killed that Raptor pilot.
I guess the Russians will need to go back to old WW2 planes mode. Spam 10k of them and the whole NATO countries will have a hard time shooting them down 😂
I was watching a video of some F-16/F-18 fighter pilots on a panel discussing what it would be like to fight a P 51 and pretty much all of them said they would not wanna try it in a slow fight. Essentially they would just choose to shoot it from beyond line of sight
Boom and zoom tactics and the P51 would most likely be toast while the jet can just keep making passes at it using the power and speed to its advantage and shoot it to peace's... And that is without even using the heat seeking missiles.
@Admiral Kipper modem heat seekers such as the aim 9X douse the seeker with liquid nitrogen (very cold in liquid form), and so any engine heat difference will be easily picked out from the surroundings
@@thejhonnie piston engined aircraft do have a smaller radar crosssection due to raw size difference and radar boucing off curvatures in the body, although the side of the plane, radiators, and tail is pretty flat for radar returns - radar was used effectivly in WW2 in both the European and the Pacific theater to detect aircraft
I really love your videos and the depth of understanding of the capabilities of different aircraft and weapon systems and also the history of flight. I am going to end up asking you for a full education soon. Please keep the content coming, I really enjoy the content on this channel
I like the slomo of round 3, you can really tell that he completely tore up the engines, the ailerons and the rudders. Even if the F22 could still fly he wouldn't be able to maneuver.
A very entertaining video. Everyone needs to remember that dogfighting in the jet era is the last resort. We all saw what happened here when missiles come into play, and that is the tactic spot them before they spot you and kill them BVR before they know you are there. Ran out of missiles? Do what the other guy can't- go higher.
Obviously the rules of engagement were that the F-22 couldn't go into the vertical and use it's speed and climb advantage as you said before. It was still great to see the one circle and two circle fight. The man in the crate always makes the difference. Just like the P-51 pilots in WWII that managed to shoot down Me262s.
@Prestallar This is true. Early jet engines had horrible spool up times and throttle management was all pilot skill. No FADEC or any engine management computer.
Pretty much all 262 kills were low down where the 262 really struggled against slower, more manoeuvrable fighter. At altitude it could just boom & zoom.
@@nathanfox6388 That is assuming that the P51 is recognized as a hostile fighter. At the speeds and altitudes it would operate at that is surprisingly unlikely, ESPECIALLY considering it's continously large radar cross-section compared to modern fighters. It just doesn't look like a military aircraft on radar.
Smart man, quit while you were ahead 2-1. The first kill was a little questionable, but there’s no denying you totally killed him the second time. Good shit.
maneuver kills definitely count, if you can get the bandit to maneuver into the ground in relation to you or depart flight and not recover before they crash, you just scored a win
@@GonzoDonzo oh yes indeed, but at least the P-51 managed to gain a fighting chance in a tighter dog fight. If the F-22 was really making a serious attempt to kill the P-51 it would not only do what you said but would probably try to deny the P-51 the merge in the first place. Just sending missiles would be enough for the F-22.
@@StaleCrony I have to think on this one tjey may have planed it or agreed to some speed format. If you look at the attitude of the f22 it appears as if it is nose up trying to prevent a stall in most of the dogfights. If it were real, hit the ABs and climb and then just dive. But again, I really think they agreed to some condition of fight.
@@AbsoluteyAmerican perhaps, it seems like that’s exactly what they may have done. Realistically the F-22 has many things that it can do to avoid getting hit by the P-51. Maybe it really did have one arm tied behind it’s back, maybe their agreement was to remain bellow a certain speed and altitude in order to give the P-51 a chance to stay within the turn circle. It actually makes a lot of sense. It does make me wonder though, if the F-22 was restricted then I want too see a version of the fight that the Raptor gives it it’s best attempt every time. I doubt the P-51 will have a chance but it sounds fun to view.
Great performance, especially since Mustangs were involved in D-Day, 78 years ago. What better way to commemorate that moment than by a victory over the F-22.
Fighting over Guam! That was actually, I think, the University of Guam where he crashed @ 04:24. That running track is right next to a condo where I used to live.
First fight: Target fixated and saw nothing BUT the P-51 in his sights. Third fight: Lose sight, lose fight. As it always has been and always shall be. I also think you put bullets into his cockpit. Regardless, awesome fight as always.
@@pr0skis Well, my idea was that in a guns only dogfight between the A-10 and for example a Fighter, the Fighter would climb away and then attack it from above, keeping his speed. But with missiles he can't do that well unless he defeats both of them. With that the A-10 has a chance.
Watching these videos really highlights the importance of being able to see and fire from a distance is so important vs actually fighting them. Opened my eyes
Had a great uncle who was a Mustang driver in WWII. That was impressive and awesome victory especially on 78th Anniversary of D-day. He would have loved this.
The F22 just looks so damn intimidating, it doesn't matter what angle you look at it. I can't imagine going up against one of those in anything less than one of those alien fighters from the Independence Day movie. Also; F22 vs. Alien fighter from Independence Day please.
That would have been a good scene until the Aliens spewed out in ridiculous numbers like a swarm of mosquitoes. It was like 2000 V about 50...that spoiled the scene a lot I think.
Ummm. You know of the yf-23 right? It literally was the f22s competitor, the only reason why it lost against f22 was budget. Otherwise the plane looked way more sexy and intimidating and not to mention outperformed the f22 in every single category, literally all of them….except the slow fly by drills
Round 1 is so cinematic. Gives off some type of "mad pilot travelled in time to kill his grandfather" or something like that but the mustang wins and becomes town hero.
So basically if an F-22 flew through the Bermuda Triangle, got caught in a time warp and went back to 1946, the pilot suffered brain damage, and a P-51 happened to spot it while on patrol, this could happen.
Watching you survive getting shot by the raptor, only to watch the raptor fly straight into the ground and kill itself made my chin drop. That was absolutely amazing.
That was amazing fun, i've always said the old planes were built to last! It had your usual great flying with a comedy death but that landing in round 1 was tense! :D If this is going to be a regular thing, I'd love to see a Spitfire Mk2 vs a Eurofighter Typhoon. Cheers!
Looks like Mr. Putin should invest in a bunch of P-51s. ;-) Of course a real F-22 Raptor would NEVER let itself get into a visual range turning fight with a piston aircraft.
Really not surprising, ww2 planes were true dogfighters. Lower speed and high maneuverability will win the day in the turning fight. Jets win with speed and in the vertical. Had I been in the F-22, I’d have just used that speed to dictate the fight. Dive in on a gun or missile run, take a shot, climb away out of reach, circle around above, spot, turn in, and dive down again. Repeat till dead. As pilots of old always said, speed is life. If you got a speed advantage, use it. Especially against a target with no missiles to shoot back.
If the Raptor pilot wanted to, I'm sure they could make it a no contest fight with missiles + vertical. But I think they wanted to try and make it interesting, and I respect that! I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the video as much if the Raptor pilot just went textbook and made all the objectively correct decisions! ^^
@@Wildeskraut really? How do you figure? Because in my mind, dog fighting ended with the perfection of missile technology. Fast forward to Korea in 1951-53 and the primary weapon for the F-86 and Mig-15 were still guns, no missiles, which meant they were still dog fighting in the skies. It really wasn’t until Vietnam where we saw missiles taking over in air-to-air kills. Long story short, I fail to see how you can say dog fighting ended during ww2 when the technology that effectively ended most dogfights didn’t really become relevant until a couple decades after.
This is far more interesting than I thought it would be. Like almost every domain, this goes to show that specialized analog still has its place in the world of multi-function digital technology.
