I am just learning about Chopin now, and this piece especially really "moves" me. It sounds like the story of my life. I interpret it as someone having feelings of sadness, grief, disappointment - then a glimmer of hope - but mixed with uncertainty. I'm teaching myself how to play it. I'm determined. I love your Chopin analysis videos. You really get to the heart of what Chopin was thinking when he wrote his masterpieces. I find the augmented chord in the final cadence interesting because about 15 years later Chopin would use a similar ending cadence in the slow movement of his Piano Sonata No. 3 in B minor.

I started learning this piece, because as a child I fell in love with the Nocturnes, and since I fell asleep to them every night, I know the main melody of Op9No1 really well. However, I could never feel the whole piece as one coherent unit, the same way I do with No2. Your video really helped bring a beautiful story to this piece, and will definitely help me in my playing. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and passion!

Searching for the analysis of Nocturn No1, which I am learning now, I got so moved by your passionate explanation .. the composer’s personal hidden love story, which I had no idear at all and the way you made its story connected to this music are mind blowing! Especially the middle part - octave code comes together like a couple living far far away, then coming closer at the end on Chopin’s mind scene... OMG that was so so brilliant analysis!! Years ago, before the existence of wikipedia there was Microsoft's Encarta encyclopedia software program, and for the definition of "Nocturne" a few opening bars of this Chopin's piece was included as the introduction. I was mesmerized by it then was just beginning piano. Now that I can play this nocturne tolerably well, it has been a fantastic and worthwhile journey. Thanks for lecture!

I like that you mentioned John Field in this video. I've heard his Nocturne no. 1 in Eb and I was like "Well, I can clearly see where Chopin's Op. 9 no. 2 nocturne got it's inspiration from" cause it sounded very similar to the Chopin nocturne I knew and loved for many years.

omg I am learning this piece, because like you, this is the type of music that fits my personality, and what I enjoy playing the most in Piano. And I always search for analysis of the pieces. I love art. The meaning behind a composition can be so rich. Every note has a purpose that evokes emotion. Once I started listening, having the love story's context, I couldn't help but cry and get emotional, because I can now feel what Chopin was feeling at the moment and his music transmits it so wonderfully. What an interpretation of this hauntingly beautiful nocturne. There on the piano Chopin was looking and smiling at what this artist could do with his nocturne. I am confident that Chopin was very pleased. As an extra treat the artist took us took us on a musical journey. We have some of Chopin’s thoughts and variations on this particular piece.

Just one remark as I now verified with my nocturnes scores, all Chopin nocturnes end in major with the exception of the c minor nocturne op.48 no.1.. Now I feel like questioning: is there a hidden message from Chopin by choosing to end only this particular stunning nocturne in minor? Again, bravissimo!

Hello! Just saw your comment. Not all end in Major! Also op.32 no.1 ends in minor. Yes, definitely it was deeply thought of and has some meaning. It usually means: "there is no hope"....

As I listened to your playing of this Nocturne, this time with analysis in mind, the idea that kept coming to mind is that the most powerful note of a segment may be the softest one, opposite of so much of life that finds the loudest to be the most powerful. A tool Chopin was a master of by way of the Piano Forte.

Yes! There's definitely some hidden pain at the end and your explanation is so perfect! I love it. It really makes sense why Chopin put this strange note almost at the end of this piece. Thank you!

Greg, have you considered doing concerts of the Schubert song cycles and Schumann's Dichterliber? That would be an excellent project if you found a promising young Polish tenor or baritone, as I think those songs are a great entree to the performance of opera.

Along with love and suffering as a source of inspiration, I would add anger and frustration. The latter is what gave us some of Beethoven's greatest works.

Hey Greg! I was wondering, which editions do you use to study and learn Chopin pieces ? I am not sure but I heard something about the National editions being the “most accurate” to the original Chopin version. Thank you!

My thought was always that the sixths where of course the climax, and then the same melody but in PP and thirds with the pedal is the same thing but in the distance

Not trying to nit-pick, but John Field was Irish. Field's music serves as a precursor to impressionism in my opinion. His music uniquely used modal keys, focused on pedal points, and contrasted his melody with ostonato that created a mood or image similar to impressionism.

How could one practice the counting of the various 7-, 11-, 22-plets of the RH against the 8ths in the LH? :( is it useful to think of 1 of them as a grace note and try to keep the rest connected with the LH? or what? Basically, to learn the piece I'm counting the 8ths... :(

You should play the left hand as softly as possible, and don't care too much about it. Focus and the singing right hand. We should not hear the left hand!
