F@*K Retirement: How CS:GO’s Oldest Aim God Keeps Turning Back the Clock

In esports, there is no such thing as being too young to compete. But on the other end of the spectrum, a player’s shelf life is usually not a long one, at a certain point, players become too old.
Whatever the reason may be, most pros accomplish their greatest feats early on in their careers and transition into background roles like coaching or being an IGL, or they just retire.
But Patrick “f0rest” Lindberg isn’t like most pros. Not only can he keep up with what the kids are into these days, but this dusty-ass 32 year old is still blowing minds almost two decades since his career began.

@Zhào Liǔ it's not a problem of reflexes, it's a problem of eyesight. You wouldn't react to something you can't see. Nerves don't deteriorate because of you playing videogames. If you take precautions (use special glasses, rest properly, etc) I don't see an actual reason for a 30yo having a harder time playing videogames than a 20yo. Maybe in RTSs because of the high APM but definitely not on FPSs.

He's only 30 so the age factor hasn't really kicked in full force yet for him but it still gives me hope that I can hold off the 'gamer retirement' a bit longer before getting sidelined to the perma-solo realm of has-beens. I used to be pretty decent at CS1.6 playing in ladders and going to LANs. I'm now 33. The issue isn't decline in reflexes as long as I have enough time to warm up I am still every bit as good as I was before. But as you get older other things take over - work, family and the rest - so you cannot commit to an 80 hour a week gaming schedule any more so you lose track of the meta and your game mechanics suffer a bit. That is what makes it harder to keep up with the youngsters.

Depends on genes and environment but most folks reaction times don't start to truly fall off until their mid to late 40's. If you look at F1 racing there have been drivers that won into their mid 40's and that's pretty much the pinnacle of human reaction time measurement since failure means death and not pushing to the razor edge means a loss. I bet f0rest plays well into his late 30's and possibly until he's 40, anything past that is just icing on the cake tbh. That'd be a 30 year career at the highest level of a professional sport.

f0rest said himself that growing older isn’t too much of an issue mechanical wise, it’s more about the motivation one has to have grinding the game at that age. Older pros normally want more time to settle down and start the next chapter in their lives, but I’m sure that if someone who is 30+ wanted to still be at the top, they could do so. Fun fact: HeatoN calls f0rest "Gaming Genious" due to his ability to get good at any game he touches. Apparently f0rest has been quite high rank in DotA2 and ended up in an argument with a player from LoL about LoL being the lesser game in terms of skill. I think LoL heavily favors micro and individual perfomance, and with exceptional micro you can easily reach the upper echelons of non-pro play, even if your macro game equals that of a potato. LoL also favors skillshots and smaller aoe and duration cc, whereas Dota favors targeted casting and them big juicy cc chains. With the question in LoL often being "am I able to land this particular sequence of skills?", where in Dota the question is often "when is the the optimal time to use this particular sequence of skills?". With Dota being more mana and cd heavy it rewards careful use of skills with regards to timing, and potientally being out of juice in crucial moments, should you start spamming. Whereas LoL is more spam friendly rewarding frequent use of skills, provided you are able land them. (There are of course exceptions to this in both games, but overall I think this rings true). Dota 2 dosen't necessarily favor good micro to the same extent as LoL, usually with other macro related factors being the main claim to victory. Also with illusions, both from skills and items, and the attackspeed cap being much higher in Dota, achieving micro mastery to the same extent as possible in LoL, is not feasible in Dota. Hell even regular ass creep and jungle farming requires a PhD to do properly in Dota, whereas creep farming in LoL is very straight forward, with only player-to-player interaction in lane, being what requires any real thought. Altough LoL lacks the deny mechanic, I still believe this is true. (There are other ways to deny gold and experience than simply last hitting friendly creep yourself, zoning and good lane control being examples). I think a way to see it is that LoL is a streamlined form of the Dota formula, where player-to-player interaction takes the foreground. Which makes it more accesable, but also a lot harder to secure a win if you're up against an opponent with surperior micro skill. Compared to Dota where good macro descisions can outweigh the shortcomings of potential poor micro. Which game is the lesser boils down to preference in my opinion. Dota is a very complex game with a crazy high skill ceiling, where brain can often triumph over brawn. LoL is a very player-to-player intense game, where you can often brute force your your way out of a bad spot by being the better mechanical player. Also keep in mind that this is regarding mid to high ladder non-pro play, with pro play being a whole different beast for both games.

He is calling him an "old man" in a counter strike point of view since he is competing at a professional level that requires sharp reactions , precise aim and knowledge. For example if you cloned a forest but at his peak (cs 1.6 era) and let them battle it out on a aim map the cs 1.6 era forest would defeat present forest because of reaction time and aim but if you put them in a normal map say Train for example the present forest would outplay cs 1.6 forest due to experience/knowledge of the game. This scenario also applies to a normal counter strike competitive where veterans outplay the newbies but the newbies can sometimes out-aim the veterans.

I think people could remain competitive in e-sport up to the same age as in real sports. The main limiting factor is probably not age but passion. It's hard to remain passionate for a game for such a long period. You eventualy reach a point where you feel there is nothing else for you to learn and it becomes a matter of being high on adrenaline all the time. But the age limitation comes at 35-40 for sure, just like for every other high level sport. On a side note, I'm 38 and I started playing on the first day it was released back in 1999.

To be fair he probably just practices more effectively around his responsibilities and can remain motivated - that's what tends to have the largest effect when you're older. Finding the time to play and practice along with wanting to try new things and moving onto more stable careers. Your reaction times don't drop off a cliff over 30; otherwise nobody in F1, the air force, etc would be piloting, and the statistics show it's a minuscule drop in raw reaction times. Plus it's not really just about that, but obviously it's a factor. I'd say it's more the former (motivation/time/adjustment of responsibilities) over anything else.

when it comes to reaction time decline just look at professional cricketers especially batsman, they face bowling of up to or over 150km/h and have to react to the line of the ball, the length of the ball the speed of the ball and the bounce of the ball and make up there mind on the shot to play in like a second and they hit there peak around the age of 30 thats when they play the best. it completely debunks the "your reaction times are way slower at 30" argument

Another big reason we see less "experienced" players in the pro-scene is because of Twitch provided a way for many of the former pro's in their late-twenties early 30's a way to make money while being able to stay home and have a life. Forest's story provides good evidence that Astralis's future plans (10-man squad with two teams, an A team, and a B team) might end up working out really well. If all five members of the Astralis roster made it even their late 20's performing at the same championship-winning level then it will have paid off.
