Almost 60 years later and this is still my gold standard for Totentanz performances. Edit: No-one has surpassed it.

I think it's comparable to Cziffra's and Enrico Pace's ones in technique but not even closer in musical color and musicality, this is simply epic

I think Pace’s is the gold standard really for me, but they all bring little nuances here and there to the performance.

What a loss to posterity that Michelangeli played so little Liszt! This is a transcendental, yet profoundly musical performance. A rare thing in this repertoire indeed!

E vero questo, o no ?

Saluti

Nobody ever asked here who was the 2nd pianist ;-) The phenomenon is the fact that Michelangeli is the only pianist who had total control of every single note, not only in aspects of technique, but also musically

Michelangeli often massively stunned the music world with his epic, paradigm-making music making, and who was in the same league as Horowitz, as many pianists maintain. This reading, really, is in a very rarefied universe of technical supermen populated by....well, Michelangeli, only. Even Horowitz could not guaranteed all the right notes, and at this rapid tempi. The lyrical sections, accordingly, are given equal treatment, at the intimate side of the musical spectrum, too. Amazing pianist, to understate the case for this meteor.

This is the ONLY version of Totentanz that has a repeat (4:35 to 5:08), an introductory horn solo before the orchestral tutti (12:06), and a recap of the orchestral theme by the piano (12:46). In other words, it's the only one that's perfect. I have not come across any other version like this. If someone can point me to one, much appreciated.

One of the best versions i know, along with Cziffra and also Krystian Zimerman. But, for Michelangeli i've always regretted that in the little Presto after the canonique he doesn't play the octavas like they are written by Liszt in the two last bars before the Fugato, he plays a facility instead and it's regrettable i think.
