I came here to learn why my ship was losing grip while cornering and this taught me SO MUCH MORE than I was expecting. I had no idea all of these mechanics and player found exploits were in the game and I am inspired to learn some of these techniques!
Under rated game. Sometimes I think games don’t really need to be totally reignited by reinvention but by simple additions. An online play that allows the community that still exists for this game to connect with new tracks and an increased difficulty setting to challenge drivers to increase their abilities would be perfect for this game. I think sometimes game creators focus too much on an absolute over haul or desperately hold onto the hope that graphics alone will create a great game. Nice video! Whoa you’re way out in front! *grand prix victory theme plays*
Thanks man. It was both a lot of fun and a lot of work to make. Eventually I'll finish all individual track tutorials as well in the coming months. How are you these days?
I'm a little late to the party here, but I wanted to say thank you for making this guide. It's incredibly useful with how scarce information regarding this game can be sometimes.
I'm currently "getting into" the game. I used to play it a lot on the N64 back then but never knew how "deep" the gameplay actually is. For me it was a great achievement beating the Master Cups.. but now i'm hunting the Staff Ghosts and it is so much fun to beat a time after hours of practice and finally getting some drifts right and beating a staff ghost. This gameplay aged really well.
I just wanted to win an expert cup... An then I found this... Totally crazy I had no idea. Big Thank You for the great work. Hopefully there comes a remake anytime. This game is so much fun!
Thank you for making this tutorial 4 years ago. I’ve played this game casually my entire life and never knew about these techniques. Looking forward to learning these techniques
Well, I think I just levelled up. My brain was clearly only ready for about a third of this, so I'll have to come back for more once I pick up some more wins.
Dude I've got to say, you've helped rekindle my interest in F Zero. It's been years since I played X, and I'm fully back into it again. Thanks for making these videos!
Haha I like that you included the multiplayer clip from NLG 2012. Such a legendary moment. Thank you for making these tutorials! I learned a lot watching this. It was even too much information to remember all at once so I'm sure I'll be back here at a later date
Been ages since I've played this game. It's been great revisiting it and I just want to thank you for uploading this video. I suspected about 5 minutes in that you're the same guy I saw do a speed run for AGDQ years ago and sure enough, looked up the video and it was you! Man...your run was phenomenal, you must be one of the best if not the best in the world!
Now with the upcoming inclusion of F-Zero X in the Nintendo Switch virtual store, these tutorials may gain some extra views. I wish there was an online option though, one can only dream.
Man, this video brings me back to some of my playing in 2000-2002, though I never got in on the air ground glitch. I definitely remember JKT's crazy acronyms as they evolved!
For a long time I wanted to know how to spin attack now and now I just learned how to do drifting and double without even knowing I was doing it. Also I was never knew nothing about the drift and grip settings so thanks for that too
I really appreciate you making this video, as I've wanted a guide to the movement in F-Zero X for a long time, but couldn't find one until I found yours on a whim. However, I have a disability that impacts my ability to process sounds and speech, and so it's very difficult for me to understand what you're saying, due to my unfamiliarity with your accent as well as the volume of the music being very close to the volume of your speaking. Would you be willing to add subtitles? I'm sure it would help others, as well. Again, thanks for making this video!
Thank you so much for this video. I'm certain that the F-Zero X ladder will see more activity, especially from myself. ~IAmTheEg7, FZC Edit: I'm well into the top 100, this video helped so much. One of my favorite games on the N64 for sure!
Definitly going to get myself a n64 and finally learn to play that game, after years of watching speedruns/records. Thank you very much for the tutorials (this and the track by track tutorials)
Wow, this game must still be really competitive, as i remember being ranked around 19th in the overall rankings when I quit around 2003. I am now 101st, lol. Good to see Jimmy "JKT" Thai hanging in there at 13th despite no updates since 2007. His execution of the old strats must have been almost perfect to still be that high 11 years later.
I lvoed this game as a kid! too bad my copy is doing something odd now i need to reget it on virtual console you did a very in depth look! i love this! good job!
Thanks, i'm sure you heard F-Zero x was just added to the switch and this guide came quite handy. Also it's interesting that a lot of these mechanics don't go into Super Mario 64 levels of BS with the BLJ and all, it's cool that you're able to reach high speeds without breaking the game although that section where you have to jump past half the course raises a few red flags, i'm down to learn these mechanics very cool.
Damn. As a completionist, I'm usually very persistent with at least finishing the "campaign" at the highest difficulty. But this game is giving me second thoughts... Especially after destroying novice and standard, and then not being able to beat the Jack cup in expert after many attempts. Imagine another racing game, say any Need for Speed, where your car starts to slide if you turn the wheel more than an infinitesimal amount, and where you have to do some kind of double tap jump to take a sharp corner otherwise you see 15 cars fly past you after you exit. Just frustrating... Thank for the info though, maybe I'll work out the patience to practice all this...
I agree because i try fly outside the track few times and suddenly my driver scream and i die of course. Alot of very handy information from this guide.
I beat the game with side attack cornering only. I never really learned how to use drift mechanic, and actively avoided it because I couldn't control it. This play style made the game stupidly difficult I think.
Hello, amazing video, but how do you get the picture quality so good, ive seen your video of the RGB Tim worthington console which i have, going into a 4k oled using a rad2x (480p) the picture is worse than your video’s , just wondered if this is recorded from Real Hardware or upscaled. Regards
My autistic brain couldn’t handle certain parts of the information provided with certain sections, I didn’t think simply explaining settings and grip would have me more lost than before. Regardless. Still helpful in certain spots for me.
"The game was optimized for the N64 controller... Using any other controller would be seriously handicapping yourself." Well, that might explain why I can't even nudge in the direction of a turn on the Switch version without my machine fishtailing at a hard angle. Is this pursuit hopeless, or do I just need to keep practicing? Would using the wireless N64 controller for Switch be closer to the original hardware?
I am thinking about getting this on the wii u eshop before it closes. I'm not intuitively good at racing games so some guidance is greatly appreciated.
If I would want to play and optimize the DD courses, would it control the same if I were to play it on an Everdrive 64? I'm aware playing it on something like project64 is a handicap, so would it be the same on an everdrive? Sorry if it didn't make sense. Absolutely great video!
Yes there is there is a tool you can use to make your own custom tracks on pc and patch to the rom including just the stock DD tracks. Search for F-Zero Execution project on romhacking.net. On top of that there exists a combo rom of the normal game and 64DD add-on that works on Everdrive.
34:32 I'm stuck not being able to do the halfpipe trick. Do you really right side attack while on the right side of the track or was that misspoken? When I right side attack to the right of the track I just fly off. Also in the sample video, the ship doesn't flash red like it's doing a side attack at all, so what am I not getting?
I just have one other question, you know how to get to the jack? The one you can unlock , the one after the King . As far as I know you have to beat all the first 3 in standard difficulty. However do you happen to know, if you can access it also, by only beating the beginning and queen ones in all 3 difficulty settings: easy, standard, and hard difficulty? And i'm not even concerned with the X one, i'll never be able to beat any race in this game on the hardest difficulty.
Not sure if you need to beat it on standard or expert to be honest to unlock Joker Cup. I can't even remember the last time I played GP on anything else than Master. You don't need to because there is a code to unlock everything: At the title screen, press start to get the mode select, and enter: L-Shoulder, Z, R Shoulder, Up-C, Down-C, Left-C, Right-C, Start.
