Yes! I swear the racing was so much better back then. Less technology and closer racing. Plus so many legends on one track, Senna, Prost, Mansell and eventually Schumi just adds to it. Great work on the edit!
Amazing video, great clip!! 1989 - 1992 was truly the golden age of modern formula one.... The cars were quick, and so gorgeous... and the drivers were all personalities, and all so diverse... Don't we all wish F1 were like that again!
nothing to say...f1 in 1991 is the real f1...soo competitive, and with so much great drivers like mansell, senna, prost, piquet, alesi, berger, schumacher, hakkinen, patrese....great year!!!
Its not until you watch these old videos that you realise how much closer the cars could get back then. Nowadays, the cars are so hard to drive in 'dirty air' that often it is more of a procession than a race. Racing often is done in the pit lane. I can only see it being worse next year with no refuelling.
Don't forget Williams tested an eCVT transmission that gave then 2-3 seconds per lap. And 2 way telemetry witch allowed the tuning and setup of of the cars from the pits. I remember a documentary with Senna talking about a 1 milimeter adjustment required.
Nobody had active suspension or traction control until 1992. Active suspension disappeared when the turbo-era ended because there was no longer enough power to drive the hydraulics. Only Ferrari and Williams had semi-automatic transmissions in 1991. Everybody else was still doing manual shifts. 4-wheel steering and ABS didn't appear until 1993.
The active rides could eliminate roll, squat and dive completely, even dive into a corner like motorcycles. It controlled the weight balance, aero balance, it peeled the drag on straights increased the downforce in the corners, and could be reset for optimal performance on every section of the tracks. Today's cars don't even come close to that. They're basically semi-spec crap like NASCAR tweaked to the N-th degree. The active ride car remain the most advanced racecars ever made and races.
Williams introduced the active suspended FW14B in the last race of the 1991 championship. Ferrari introduced the semi-auto transmission in 1989 and TC/LC in 1990, witch Williams had in their 1991 cars (and I'm not talking about the FW14B). The technical problems of Williams for to witch they lost both championships where due to the semi-automatic transmission.
Materials science and aerodynamics have improved in 15 years, but F1 regulations have become more stringent. Today cars (must) run on metal springs (same as 100 years ago) whereas 15 years ago computerised active suspension was allowed. 15 years ago the cars also ran ABS, traction control, fully automatic gearboxes and 4 wheel steering. In those aspects, yes the cars were more advanced then. Same way a 5 year old Bentley is much more advanced than a new Fiat Uno.
I love watching the hand gestures! Looks like they're describing some pretty awful handling characteristics. F1 has changed so much since 1991. With full width rear diffusers and fat tires, handling was always compromised for raw brutal performance in those days, and the tracks were bumpy as hell. Today's F1 cars are so ultra-refined, shaped more by regulations than engineers, and the tracks are so immaculately manicured. The driver has become more technician than artist or athlete.
@RedhotIta1 Yeah, this car was great too,, for me 80s have produced the best looking cars of f1. (and 90-95) Renault re50, Brabham bt50-49, ferrari 126 c4.... ats d7 more examples how to do good looking cars.
i am a formergo kart racer here in sao paulo brasil , i know very well what happens on the track , schummi is incredible fast , but like lewis he is dirty , hug from brasil
Why is my comment marked as spam ?! 1982/83 first tests of active suspensions 1984 electronic Fuel Control 1987 Lotus and Williams use active suspensions in races, drop it due to power loss 1989 Ferrari introduces a semi-auto with paddles 1990 Ferrari rewrites Fuel Control into Launch Control and Traction Control, and also use active dampers/semi-active suspensions 1991 Williams follows Ferrari with a semi-auto + LC/TC, and in the last race, active suspensions 1992/3 +ABS, 2 way telemetry, 4WS
Drivers are more athletic then ever and cars of today are actually less advanced then late 1991, 92 and 93 cars. Those cars had Traction Control, Launch Control, ABS, semi-active or fully active suspensions, gearboxes with fully automatic upshit modes, 2 way telemetry, even 4 wheel steering.
@newby1kanewby Cheating? Filthy? Nope, all I see is a multiple Champion. And don't you dare try and say Senna didn't have the same attitude as Schumacher. In my books Senna and Schumacher are the best drivers in history. They went the extra mile to make sure they won. That's what makes the difference, love it or hate it, it's what it is.
Yes I agree completly. I saw them all those years racing in Mexico. All the cars had an awesome look. Today formula 1 cars just look like an ugly toys... greetings from mexico
I'm sorry but that's B*. Reducing the weight of the components has more to do with the advances in CNC machines, CAD-CAM and carbon fibre ovens. It's got nothing to do with the cars per se. The engines aren't lighter or more powerful. The 2005 engines had 950 - 1000 hp and ~80s kilos mass, now they're standardized at 95 kilos and rev limited. The 1992 Renaults had ~ 800 hp today's V8s have ~755 hp. ABS, TC, act. suspensions, 2 way telemetry, counted a lot.
schumacher was more dirty , senna was faster then the others he was ´´the intimidator´´ of f1 , schummi was dick ´´the dirty´´ from the crazy race hug from brasil
