Hey Ben here is a tipp for future races: When the Red and Yellow Striped Flag is out keep you eye on the Track ahead of you, because this is the easiest way to spot oil on the track from an engine failure
Tiametmarduk the button combination for the pit stops get inverted depending on what side of the main straight the boxes are. if the boxes are on the right part of the main straight it will be like the ones you have done by the moment. but in tracks like monaco, canada, turkey...etc, the pits are on the left side of the main straight so the button conbination gets inverted.
i'll give you the commands: BOX ON THE RIGHT SIDE: front wing: triangle rear wing: X tyres: R1, L1, R2, L2. fuel: circle release: square. BOX ON THE LEFT SIDE: front wing: triangle rear wing: X tyres: R1, L1, R2, L2 here comes the change. fuel: square. release: circle
Proud of you Ben finally using Traction Control properly, Idea for a video you can edit the grids in single races, Monaco with Ferrari/Renault/Mclarens at the back
Hey Ben. Just a quick tip, as someone who played this game religiously for year, on the start, if you quick shift up to the second and third gear almost immediately, you get a massive launch and can basically jump at least 2-3 cars ahead. Not sure if thats a fair system, but just in case you run into a problem in qualifying, the quick shift method always works like a charm.
In the formation lap you have to press accelerator and brake at the same time to heat the front tyres. When you are waiting in the grid, the more you accelerate, the more your tyres cool down, so accelerate at the last moment. I don't know why this happens, but it's just that way in the game.
Ben this is so far the best series your doing so far. I have been a lifetime fan of f1 considering I am 23. I completely forgot how good the games were back then and even rules and regulations back then too. Well done again pal, big fan over here in Wales!!
Codemasters should be embarrassed watching this...a game ten years old shits on any of the games they've made. Features like mechanical failures and oil on circuit, formation laps, the damage, the aggressiveness of the AI...this game was obviously ahead of its time.
I keep thinking you are driving completely wrong and going into every corner miles too fast and understeering like crazy, but then I remember that that was actually the winning driving technique in 2006. I really wish I could play this game, it looks amazing, and liking the videos :)
You have to do what real-life F1 drivers do in Q3 back in the day - burn as much fuel as possible throughout most parts of Q3 and set a fast final flying lap near the end of the session! IIRC in Q3 you can still complete your flying lap even when the timer reach zero. Meanwhile, in-universe, Ben gets laughed at for crashing almost every single time and complaining about "kerbs" every single time. Then at 15:13 he made the overtake of the year.
Braking hard used to be a really good way of generating heat into your tyres, You can make it so if you weave and brake hard alot, that you do preserve some heat
Ben, I've played this game a lot in 2010 it was I think. Next time on the parade lap, put it in 1st, go full on the accelerator and hard on the brakes. You'll lock up the wheels which'll heat up the tyres. This won't affect tyre wear seen as this is only affected in the race! Heated up tyres give you a much quicker start!
i always went for the overcut for my pit stops. it works if you manage to not spin the car on the in-lap because you escape the pit traffic and have faster tyres at the end. also ben you should lift of when your on the curbs to avoid spinning. catalunya is a tough track to score points on . congrats
just a Tip for The pit stop strategy: put The fuel to More than half (for example 12lap race- > pit at lap 7 or 8) if you press select (it was the select button on PSP..should be simular on ps3) you can ASK for an early stop...that way you can check how you perform and See if you can keep The tieres alive for More then half The race and pit Situationable (around lap 4-8 depending in how well you re doing/traffic/car DMG/pace)
Ben, staying out till after midway into the race is the best strategy. You'll have the freshest tyres.

If you want to go on an aggresive strategy, bear in mind that the time, there was refuelings at pitstops and that the Q3 was done with the fuel for the first stint. So you might go and try to put less fuel in your car for the Q3, you'll also have a lighter car for the start of the race, good to make up positions. Or you might just go the exact opposite !
Hi Ben, Fantastic videos as always. Just a few pointers going forward! Tweaking your set-up and spending the time to do so in FP1-FP3 can really pay dividends! A lot of performance can be unlocked. Tailoring your Aero and engine settings to each track works a treat as well. Also I noticed your suspension was 14, 14, that's too stiff for the kerbs, if you lower them that should help you when it comes to kerbs. Also you can choose your tyre compounds as well in the setup options, the softer tyre should help! I have played over 500 hours on the PS2 version, its a lovely game and great to see it on your channel!
Ben you can press both circle triangle and cross button in the same time with your thumb on your ps3 controller ! You'll gain some precious time for your pitstop :)
If you are confident of getting into Q3, set your race strat such that you pit earlier, as it will mean your car is lighter during Q3. Not sure how the extra laps on the second stint will affect your tires, but these aren't Pirellis with significant degradation.
For strategy, do a no-stop on 20% races. Go as long a stint as the game lets you in Q3/race, and just save a little bit of fuel through the race. Beware the tyre wear though!
If you would like to watch some old seasons get on daily motion and search for Johann Alboretto, he has 96, 02, 03, 05, 07, 08, 09 if I remember correctly. They are all Australian broadcasts with ITV commentary.
Haven't played this in years but from memory if you take off ABS and TC on the formation lap and hold down both accelerator and brake your tyres will get to 99 by the start of the race, hopefully that works.
That ride hieght is loco! I always ran 14mm on this track. If you want more speed, highly recommend looking up car tunes for each track. The game saves your tunes for each track
Ben if you search on yuotube for "f1 2006 qualifying" you can find full qualifying sessions. Also dailymotion has a lot of videos, including full qualifying as well, but also races and training sessions from 2005 to 2009. It's well worth watching for those who were fans to remeber the good old days of the v10 engines and the first years of the v8, and for people like you that didn't follow f1 back on these days
Ben i have an advice for you that will make you seconds quicker. Try reducing the camber as much as possible (both front and rear cambers to the minimum). Similarly increase the ride height near the maximum. This works for all the long circuits. Good Luck!! :)
Strategywise, there no undercut. There is the overdue. The use of the tyres will be overdone by the lack of fuel so the one staying out longer usually wins in the pitstops. So reverse to what we have now.
on the warmup laps brake and accelerate at the same time it will lock the front heating them up and spin the rear heating them up it will also warm up the brakes
When Champ edition came out, Playstation3 magazine reviewed it and said that the game was Soulless. But I think Champ edition has matured with age, it`s a lot better than Codemaster`s last efforts at F1 games.
You can restart races. You have to save the career before the race and if you crash then exit the career without saving and load the save from just before the race and you can have a second attempt
if you're using a controller, when you turn in, don't back out, or use choppy steering, it throws you to the kerbs and will for sure spin you out. Above all, if you're using a D-Pad, don't, use the joy sticks
As a F1 fan of old, I think you should look for a 2006 season review :) It's both useful to get to know what was going on during this season and it's really entertaining, it was a great season :) I hope this helps!
4:51 I love this game, but you can tell like your first or second video that the track layouts aren't as mapped as well compared to later games. The two roads that are suppose to connect to the 13-mile track are missing. Edit: also, you need to give the front some space, get some speed, then brake hard while weaving to get the tire temps up. Weaving only lessens the decrease in temp at least in this game.
Yeah Tiamet said that the first video but you can really tell on that bird's-eye view. Doesn't matter, totally nostalgic of playing and those Alonso/Schumi seasons.
+amillwardmusic yeah the tracks are a little inaccurate that said the lighting in this game shits all over any other console f1 game it's simply stunning still codies could learn something from it for f1 2016
Oh and may I remind you that Nurburgring hosted the European Grand Prix and Hockenheim was also on the calendar as the German Grand Prix venue in 2006😊
Hey Ben if you prefer accelerating and braking with the triggers it is possible to change the controls in the options menu. Personally I play this game with a xbox 360 controller via an adapter. Thanks for a good series and loads of entertaining videos.
3:37 - that was part of the strategy. Do you be agressive and have a light fuel load to get on pole or do you brim it and start further back but go much longer or on one less stop. I liked refuelling. Im guessing Max v's dad doesnt! (Bit of history for those too young to know what the hell im talkin about, search 'Jos Verstappen Pit stop 1994 German GP'.... bad, v.bad.)
