The fact that this like the 5th video of the weird aero f1 cars had in the last couple years shows us that F1 is definitely trying to keep up entertained until race week.
This is very true but I do think an part of it has to do with all of the new fans to F1, especially with all of the fans from drive to survive. This gives people who just started watching a look at the past they might not have known of/searched for. Having nothing else is also probably a factor tho too
The Tyrell 6 wheeled car was one of the strangest. Really cool to see teams trying some odd attempts through the years. Funny that a lot of these worked "too" well.
7:45 - No. They were forced to remove them because the less wealthy teams came up with an affordable way to be more competitive, and the wealthier teams didn't like that.
@@BoBz013 This joke is massively overdone and also not particularly accurate. If you simply take a look at the F2007 and the MP4-22 side-by-side, they look extremely different, aerodynamically.
I know, right? I mean who cares that it keeps the racing better and closer, I want to see 1 car innovate and win without challenge. I mean that's fun, right? Right? ......right?
F1 Engineers over the years feels like that Portlandia skit (Put a Bird on It). Hi, I am an F1 engineer and I put wings on things. Car Nose: Put a wing on it. Side pods: Put a wing on it. Mirrors: Put a wing on it. Halo: Put a wing on it. Tires: Put a wing on it. Front Wing: Put a wing on it. Rear Wing: Put a wing on it. Driver's helmet: Put a wing on it. Just put a wing on it!
DAS would give an immediatly advantage on setup configuration. Even if every team had. Would remove all setup competition that we have today. No one wanted that, thats why Mercedes didnt even complain about it.
Because of the great token system. Teams could never catch up to Mercedes while they could do stuff like this. It was banned for the sake of the budget for the teams.
6:35 - 7:57 - love these 😂😂 miss those days when F1 was about unique car designs... yes, the differences between a top team and a low cost team was huuuuuuge but look at those inventions bro
4:34 FIA: those bits obstruct drivers' vision Also FIA: Let's introduce halo P.S. I am not against halo, I've welcomed its introduction to F1. But the argument of FIA is contradictory
Drivers have said in interviews they do not see the halo at all; its in the blind spot of your vision, like your nose. That probably wasn't the case with those fins.
stuff in the middle of your eyes, and fairly close, is probably less obstructive than them being on the sides of your vision and a meter down the nose. Honestly, I'm more surprised the FIA didn't have a blanket ban on sticky uppy bits pasted on the top of the nosecone, would've stopped a lot of mini wings right out.
@@geoffs3310 We have binocular vision bud. Put your hand sideways in front of your face and you can see around it just fine. Can't say the same for two beams a meter in front of you.
Form the divers Perspektive the halo is nearly invisible when looking at the road ahead. It works like putting your Finger directly Information of your nose
HALO doesn't obstruct vision as it is close and between the eyes, try putting a finger up between your eyes and then focus on something behind the finger and you can see through it perfectly fine. I've driven cars with HALO in VR and you get the same effect since there are two eyes, not just one like a monitor and you forget it is there after a few mins.
@@ritloxx its an at least 35mm strut an half to three quarter arms away from your face. so three fingers held in front of you at least. it is still funny
@@jodiekeegans7914 three fingers. the halo strut is at least 35mm wide. its quite a bit larger than the two aero strakes that were even further away. the point still stands, but in testing the drivers liked the halo more than the aeroscreen, so thats the reason for it.
Got to see Gordon Murray's T50 Fancar run at Knockhill this weekend. Great to see that innovation being used on a modern day hypercar and boy is that car something amazing!
that Sam Collins commentary really is a delight, like the chap also I think I've heard Gordon Murray recall the story of the fan Brabham at least 5 times by now haha
That walrus Williams did look great tho, remember being impressed with the looks when it was unveiled then it went round the track and didn't i feel a fool 😂😂😂
FIA : We have changed rules for the cars. Please innovate new designs. Teams : Here is our new design. FIA : Thanks this one is banned. Please innovate new designs 😂😂
So the Mercedes DAS system is in the video eventough it was mainly for less drag of the tyres ( less TOE is a straight wheel less drag ) than an aero advantage . But where is the iconic OP double diffuser of Brawn GP. ?
Dude that’s awesome. Can’t wait to watch ur other video. Crazy braking at 160 into the chicane seems scary and appreciate what F1 drivers are capable of
Other words, every time when F1 teams innovate FIA bans the innovation. How effective the fan car would be these days ? Like could Ferrari beat Red bull if they attach a fan at behind the car ?
They could simply tell the engineers the car has to have 4 open wheels, open cockpit, fit within a box of a certain size and produce no more than 800hp. Done. Let the engineers have fun.
Can you guys do a video about F1 innovations that were banned in one form but returned back to the sport in other form? Like turbo engines, ground effect and probably lots more that I don't know of.
8:52 Jordan weren't the only one to use twin supports. Sauber also did. Try the late 60s and the aerofoils for crazy aero.... This video is underwhelming af
Mercedes has a wonderful idea: change the toe-in on the straights. Moving the steering was clumsy. What is to stop a team from using a button or combination of buttons to do the same (or even more)?
I was hoping Tyrrell running front tyres on the rear in practice for the 1996 German GP would make it 😔 (Would have done it in qualifying too, if not for a water leak)
It's really sad how the FIA just ban all the brilliant innovations of teams, like that's what they have designers for, it's to design some insane technology to make they're car faster, if they don't want that they might as well do like F4 I think it is, where everyone has the same car...
I still don't get how DAS wasn't classed as a moveable aero device. It altered the external surface of the car and Mercedes even publicly admitted, early on, that it was to help with aero.
2006 FIA: “you can’t have two thin pieces of carbon fiber on the nose, it impairs your vision!” 2018 FIA: “yeah this Thick support beam for the HALO is fine.”
You're right front mounted wings are not a new thing but you have to back further. Lotus ad a wing on the back that was working well so Colin Chapman decided to add an identical wing to the front as well. So they would have superior downforce at the back and front. They looked riddiculous made the cars almost undrivable so they scrapped them.
F1 teams : innovates FiA : does it improve performance ? F1 teams : absolutely FiA : does it comply with safety regulations? F1 teams : huh ? FiA : *banned*
Be cool to get a race of all the banned cars with all their modifications going to see which one was most effective and could it be implemented better today?
During the discussion regarding the vertical elements on the BMW car, they talk about devices not impeding the drivers' vision...it's been just fine with halo. Just sayin'.
