Steve Hinton puts a Grumman F7F Tigercat through its paces at the Planes of Fame Chino Airshow 2009. This is probably the best aerobatics performance in an F7F Tigercat you will ever see. Just listen to the roar of those PW R-2800 Double Wasp radial engines pumping out over 2,000 horse power each! The Planes of Fame Chino Airshows are probably the most unique collection of flying warbirds anywhere in the world today. This years theme was a salute to Grumman Aircraft and featured Grumman aircraft were J2F, F3F, F4F, F6F, F7F, F8F and the TBM Avenger.

@TJDOZIER1 Sorry, you're wrong. A single squadron of (unarmed) F7F1P's saw service in 1945. Their job was to photo-recon the potential landing zones for the initial invasion of Japan. I have the honor of knowing one of those very few, very brave pilots. His love of the Tigercat surpasses even his first love, the F4U. I wish you could meet him.

This brought back fond memories of my youth seeing this particular Tigercat performing at the High on Kalamazoo Airshow. Glad to see it still thundering through the skies and wowing audiences. Thanks for sharing!

I wonder if this is the same guy I saw give a balls to the wall performance in the Tigercat at an airshow in Wappinger's Falls, NY in the 80's? Sure looks like it might be the way he is flying in this vid.

My favorite fighter manufactures. The Wildcat, the Hellcat, the Tigercat, and my personal favorite, the Tom Cat. All of em' going down in history as some of the greatest fighter planes ever built.

Steve must have been told to take it easy either that or he was afraid the wings were gonna snap off cuz i didnt see anything that any normal fighter pilot would have done back in the day

This is correct. Deliveries of the Tigercat began in 1944, but issues with single-engine operation and a high landing speed kept them off of the WW2-era carriers.

It's almost along the lines of an A-10.... Different roles of course, but those design lines look pretty flexible in application of roles.

I worked with this plane when it was owned by the Kalamazoo Air Zoo. I was just a kid who hung around the hanger until they put me to work as "Hey Kid!" pulling props and running firebottles. I always loved that plane, and I know she's in good hands. Just giver her a pat on the old "ass pad" for me the next time she tries to squat on her tail when you tow her. Maybe I'll get down there to visit her at a show someday.

We never overstress our aircraft or engines. These aircraft are flown so the public can experience these examples of aviation history. Seeing them in books or on video does not compare to the live experience. Parts are purchased, traded, and when needed hand fabricated.

Look to the right and see my video titled "F8F Bearcat Aerobatics". It is a F8F Bearcat performance from the same airshow as the F7F Aerobatics video. Planes of Fame Airshow..the greatest warbird airshow in the world.

Look how narrow the fuselage is shown 4:50 It's like a dart with wings and motors attached. Super narrow.

First airplane I ever rode in and at age 17 riding in the back of an F7F-3N dogfighting F-51's over Tustin,it just doesn't get any better than that.Ended up flying over 100 hours in them as an RO before switching to the F3D-2.

Alex Vraciu was flying a F8F Bearcat after the war at some naval base spotting a Tigercat & deciding he hould jump it. The Tigercat promptly gave Vraciu all he could handle in the mock dogfight, in the end it was a draw. Vraciu was flabbergasted, after all, he was in a Bearcat! After landing he inquired about the Tigercat pilot. Answer: Marion Carl.

Not exactly a "forgotten fighter" but not the first one people usually think of when talking about twins. Beautiful plane and nice video.

I heard that mitsubishi A6M ZERO could shoot down F6F ,P38,P51 sometimes. but its impssible to this plane !! F7F barely appeared in ww2 . happily for all japanese pilots!!

Every time I fly with Steve I think he does some "awesome pilot work stuff" myself! I've been at 350 Kts at 50 feet in the AD Skyraider with Steve, and it was awesome.

I'm back again! Steve Hinton is one smooth pilot! A favorite video of mine. There is an F7F up at John Session's Historic Flight Museum near Everett,WA. that Steve should come up and fly ! "Nice Kitty" - I think is the name of it - formerly owned by pilot Mike Granat - Naval Air veteran!

It is not related to fear of structural failure, it is just common sense. Our warbirds or any warbirds we fly in are maintained to the highest standards, but it is just not necessary to load up the airframes with high G's.

Thank you TJ for posting this incredible flight by Steve Hinton! One of my favorite planes to see and fly on our simulator at HFM in Bellingham. Mike Granats plane (an F7F used to be kept here, but is now at John Sessions Historic FM in Everett.

I would like to have more information on any F7Fs used for photo-recon of Japan. I have never heard that and I can't find any information about it. Where did they fly from? Why can't I find any reference to an F7F-1P? What unit were they assigned to? If this is some hidden history, it should be documented before it is lost.
