The FA20 engine used in the Toyota 86, the Subaru BRZ and its variants has a flaw in the valve rocker design that causes it to fail. We have been involved in a Toyota 86 Race Series for the past year and a half and during that time we have had to replace 3 blown engines on a single car due to this issue that was unknown at the time. Toyota explained that it was caused by overrevving the engine, but as the issue continued to occur we were unsatisfied by the explanation given by Toyota and so we at Denstoj Auto Centre have design a retainer system for the rockers to prevent this from happening again.
If you are interested in purchasing the retainer kit, please see denstoj.com.au for more info.

Thanks for this! Just finished a rebuild on a 2013 BRZ and have some valve noise on the driver's side. This technique will be a tremendous time saver!!!

Wicked! I hope you had a chance to fix it and install the retainers while you had the engine out? It would suck for a rocker to fail on a brand new engine build!

i also hv the same issue!can i know what i hv to replace?
@2003wrx64
@2003wrx64 2 года назад
@@cleo7893 in my case the issue was that the small rectangular piece from the back of the original cam sprocket had come loose from the sprocket (that's the initial failure causing the CEL) and was stuck to the mounting face of the camshaft. I didn't notice it and installed the new sprocket over it. New sprocket being mounted slightly askew caused a loss of oil pressure at the sprocket and the rattling sound after warm-up.

All FB/FA engines will spit out the rockers at high RPM if the valve clearance is beyond the middle of the factory spec. If you want a high-revving FB/FA, your valve clearance spec should be closer to factory minimum spec. You won't float valves until well beyond redline

Hi, I'm in Australia how much is it gonna cost for you guys to install these retainers? Taking out an engine seems a bit hard for a garage mechanic lol

Hey, @HOU HOU it's possible to do yourself but there are a few critical things to check in the process. If you would rather us install our Rocker Retainer Kit for you, we'd love to do it. A ballpark quote is $2,700 AUD for a drive-in, drive-out installation. For details, please see: denstoj.com.au/pages/install-fa-fb-denstoj-rocker-retainer-kit-in-toyota-86-subaru-brz Feel free to *call on 02 4962 2008* or email dennis@denstoj.com.au to book it in. We're based in Newcastle. What about you?

@@houhou9716 On all of the vehicles that we’ve installed our Rocker Retainer Kit on we’ve had no issues. This has been on 86s that are daily driven to track cars competing in the Toyota 86 race series. The only issue that has occurred was on a vehicle in the States (we didn't install) where the clips had worn against the machined shoulder on the pivot due to incorrect installation of the clips. Full details are on rixter145’s post: www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142047&page=7 Since this issue, we’ve improved the design to a custom pivot that removes the shoulder and explained how to install the clip properly in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QJSK6_t8h4Y.html

Yes, these are a must on all FA20 and FB engines across naturally aspirated and boosted either turbocharged or supercharged.

I own 2012 Forester with an FB25 that has a top end knock. It has the same style valve train as the one in your video. In your experience, where does the knocking come from? It’s not a tick, but a distinct knock. I’ve had the engine out twice, and really don’t want to remove it again until I know what the repair is.

Wish you did a full install video as well. This is ALOT more difficult on the intake cams.
@DenstojAutoCentreCarrington
@DenstojAutoCentreCarrington 3 года назад
It's definitely trickier on the intake cams. Recording a video of a full install starting from engine out is definitely on our videos to make list. Feel free to ask any questions you have and I'll do my best to help out.

I ended up figuring out the intake cams side and getting done. It took me 4 hours to figure out both intake and exhaust on on side. The other side I was able to get it done 1.5hr.

@@DenstojAutoCentreCarrington I'm glad too! If I hadn't bought the super long skinny flat head screwdriver I would have been.... screwed! LOL. Otherwise I would have has to take off the whole timing just to get to it. Tip for readers: that little bucket at the top of the valve, if you dip that in oil then put it back on it will prevent it from sliding off again. Even with the best of intention they can really pop out, put a shop rag over the cams to prevent it from flying across the room when you remove the roller rocker. The intake roller rockers are easy to install if you put it right up to the cam and push down on the valve spring by thumb. The exhaust cam install is exactly as shown in video. Be sure to have thin long reach needlenose pliers. And a powerful mini magnet on a rod. And remove the spark plug seals. Honestly took me 6 hours total, but that was including an hour lunch break.

@@resuort Neat little write up Ibrahim! The job can be a little tricky and time consuming but it becomes easier after installing the 2nd or 3rd clip. The oil drain ports need to be plugged up with paper and take extreme care not to dislodge the valve retainer collets. 1st - Check all valve clearances and write them down. 2nd - Fit bespoke pivot without the retainer clip. Check valve clearance and correct if required. 3rd - Last step is to fit retainer clip to rocker . I suggest doing one valve at a time.

Hey Matt, thanks glad we could (potentially) help you out! Tell your friend that the next weakest link would be the connecting rod. However, if your FA20 is still naturally aspirated then it is unlikely.

How do you adjust the valves on these type of engines? I took my heads to a machine shop and they weren't able to adjust them correctly so now I have to do it myself, unfortunate but anything helps since there aren't a lot of videos over this engine.

Not sure if anyone has answered this yet, but the piece that he pulls off 3:05 is basically a shim. They’re used by the factory to get the lash to the correct tolerance. There’s different thicknesses available to achieve this
