The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is looking into what caused a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 to get within several hundred feet above the ground over the City of Yukon earlier this week.
Flight data shows Southwest Airlines Flight 4069, a Boeing 737-800 en route to Oklahoma City from Las Vegas, flew as low as 400 feet above the City of Yukon just after 12 a.m. Wednesday morning, while on a final approach to Will Rogers World Airport.

From a former airline pilot - I suspect that guys were flying a visual approach, without backing it up with an instrument approach. Visual cues at night can be odd, even for an experienced pilot. Once as an instructor evaluating another instructor's student, ...I had a licensed pilot line me up to land at night .....on a mall parking lot. As a new airline pilot many moons ago, I sure screwed up my first visual approach into LGA. Despite being a beautiful sunny day :) There's a learning curve. Instrument approaches are actually easier to fly, at least at one's start flying a jet. Regardless of the cause, it was a situational awareness failure. Looking forward to the final report. A rule of thumb - For every 3 miles out from a field, one should add 1000 feet. Ex - one should be at 3000 above ground level, about 9 miles from touchdown. They were about 9 miles out, and therefore should have been at 3000 feet, plus add 1000 for the airport's elevation = 4000 indicated MSL altitude. I'm sure SW has listened to the cockpit voice recorder ..to ensure the sterile cockpit rule was followed under 10K feet. If not, these guys are in deep doo-doo. If the FO is still probation flying, meaning not yet under union protection, ..and the error is found to be on him, he's toast.

🤔Could it possibly have been that the the airport's elevation hadn't been factored into the auto-pilot data? ... Whatever the outcome of the investigation, it should only ever happen just the one time!! 😵‍💫

@@_Why_123 I wager that they were hand flying....not on auto pilot. "Cleared for the visual" was on the audio. Meaning, that they were cleared for a visual approach, not an instrument approach. But, common practice is to back it up with a published instrument approach for the runway assigned. At larger airports, runways each have at least one instrument approach one can fly, and many more than one. Example - JFK has ILS 22R, and GPS 22R. Some add a VOR approach.

Thank you … it makes me nervous how many new pilots we have in the pipeline

Crazy…Monday I was on a Southwest flight into Albq NM…and the pilot was essentially doing a TAD (tactical air decent) while in. Holding pattern to land. This is one of the tactics used when approaching an airfield in a combat zone. I was thinking the pilot was having a flashback or something….I honestly was fairly nervous….and that is not a typical thing for me.

That's so weird, we had a large plane do that here in southwest VA 2 days ago.

What is the highest you can legally fly a drone?

According to the laws of nature, as high as there is AIR to support it According to the laws of man, whatever FINES you can afford to get there

Southwest has an incredibly good safety record. I have always felt very safe flying with them. I don’t know if it’s true today, but in times past I think they only hired experienced pilots and you had to get Captain rated to stay there.

Southwest is like riding a 3rd world bus on dirt roads with no air conditioning and roosters above you in luggage compartment. Three times last year my flights with Southwest were delayed from 3 hours all the way to 11 hours. Never again Southwest.

Delays due to WX or the airline?

@@MarcPagan They couldn’t give a straight answer. Many excuses… missed a reservation for a very swanky steak house that I had to make 4 months prior. Not even a food voucher, had to pay $400 for a hotel one night because they couldn’t get me home. Issue after issue, and don’t forget we the taxpayers bailed them out during Covid..

@@ogadlogadl490 Doesn't sound fun. As one who has traveled a bunch, and in 3 ways....as a former airline pilot, airline sales manager/employee, and now, on biz.... flying commercial is merely degrees of discomfort. I avoid SW due to open seating. Not a knock to them...it's just not for me. My fav airline flamed out - Virgin America.

@@MarcPagan I will never fly them again, what do you think is happening with all these odd incidents lately? (As a former pilot)
@MarcPagan
@MarcPagan 2 месяца назад
@@ogadlogadl490 Hmm. Could be newer First Officers/FOs, with complacent captains. There really is a learning curve moving from a piston, to a jet. Training is great for all airlines, but experience is a required teacher. That said, your "all these incidents lately" observation could also be the classic "If it bleeds, it leads" Meaning, we don't hear about safe flights, only the rarest of rare .....an airline incident or accident. From the FAA "Air Traffic By The Numbers Every day, FAA's Air Traffic Organization (ATO) provides service to more than 45,000 flights and 2.9 million airline passengers across more than 29 million square miles of airspace." From a safety standpoint, as a pilot and one who also has a stats/econ background, and has been reviewing NTSB data since the 90s, ......I would rather sit in the back of any U.S. airline for one entire year straight, than drive one mile on Route 95 in Florida, or even a Publix parking lot :)
