Excellent presentation as always. I recently got the 36 set and I figured the same as you, that even a smaller set should allow me to blend any colour I wish. As an art history nerd I love that the replica of Albrecht Dürer's signature is featured on the pencil barrel right after the brand name :) absolutely love when companies pay attention to details like this!
I just recently tried these watercolor pencils on my recent work in progress. They have a great selection of colors and blend well with the Polychromos and other colored pencils.
I love watercolour but since moving more to coloured pencil I don't do as much watercolour work as I would like. I think I need to get my hands on some of these following your review showing how pigmented these are. I tried watercolour pencils when I was younger but these look like they are on another level.
I got a crazy bonus at work and I bought the 120 wooden box set and accidentally bought the tin also. I was surprised when they both showed up, I thought they made a mistake. But when I looked at my credit card bill they didn’t: I was charged for both! So I guess I’ll replace from the tin as I use them from the wooden box! Whoops! I like the wooden box because I just have to open it up to see all my colors instead of lifting out all the trays!
@@TheArtGearGuide Thank you so much! I've been watching a few of your videos now. I've also just bought the 68 limited editions of the polychromos and watched your review (never done much pencil work before, my work was mainly digital with a cintiq) and now you've said you just had to get the 120 set after having the 60 set I totally identify with that, its bugging me not to have all the colours though I keep telling myself that 68 is a lot of colours...I know you usually review more the pencils than the box they come in, but just to note that the limited edition cups my pencils come in are so pretty and look great, but I'm afraid they are just not very practical as you can't easily pick out the colours you need.
I absolutely love your reviews. Thank you for the chance to participate in this giveaway. I'm very excited about this. I'm so glad and grateful you share your opinions with us all!
Thanks for explaining what I hadnt thought about in using watercolor pencils...blending isnt just layered like regular pencilwork but actually creates other colors and extends the color palette to work with. I am looking forward to using some of these pencils!
Hi Harry you do amazing job keeping us updated on all these wonderful products thank you so much for sharing video have a bless day love and creative colorful hugs to you
I'd love to try these. Watercolor works are a favorite of mine but I'm too intimidated to try working with that medium. The Faber Castell Albrecht Durer would be the next best thing!
Thanks for the review. Since they seem to be compatability with Polychromos, it makes them definitely worth considering. It would have been interesting to to see the Albright Durer and same color Polychromos side by side to see how they played together.
Absolutely love these, by far my favorite ones from all the professional pencils I have. 100% recommend, even if you don’t use them for watercoloring. Beyond perfection, they’re like Polychromos + Caran D’Ache together! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much for leaving your experience with them, I can’t tell you how important comments like yours are to these videos and in helping others to make a decision as to whether or not they are going to buy a pencil. Thank you so much
@@TheArtGearGuide no, I thank YOU for doing such kind reviews, full of details and attention. Best art channel from RU-vid, no doubt in my mind about it! Keep up with the great world!
AMAZING to see what these pencils can do and the multiple applications using such a simple tool. Thank you for sharing the information which was EXTREMELY useful! Love to win a set and try these out myself!
I recently purchased their Polychromos pencils and are thrilled with the quality. These will be my next investment. Thank you Faber Castell and thank you Art Gear Guide for this fabulous review.
Loved your video! I have never tried watercolor pencils .I am a watercolor painter and truly enjoy painting .I think a set of pencils would expand my skills and enhance my art work .
Thank you Harry. Both Albrecht Durer and Polychromos pencils share the same colour numbers. names and the same colour ranges. You can add Polychromos to strengthen a completed Albrecht Durer painting. As you said, the difference in shape saves us from mixing up the two types.
Thank you so much for your comment, I wasn't aware the numbers are the same, thank you. Also, just incase you are interested as a last minute thing I have added a brand new 12 set of these awesome pencils as a giveaway, a collaboration between COLORED PENCIL Magazine and The Art Gear Guide. I have the regular FC Watercolor pencils. I've been using them for ages. Would love to own and upgrade to FC Albrecht Dürer. It looks much vivid when you used it in your video. Thank you very much for sharing your review! It looks wonderful!
Great review Harry, thanks. They look fantastic watercolour pencils. I haven't tried them yet as I have the Derwent ones, but looks like I'll need to give these ones a go at some point. Best as always, Jane

The Art Gear Guide Oh wow Harry, that was a lovely surprise, thanks so much! I do usually read your description, promise, lol 😂 I watched in a bit of a rush this morning though as I was heading out with my Mum for the day so didn't have time to read it till now. Love your channel and videos Harry whether or not you're doing a giveaway, but seeing as you and Coloured Pencil Magazine are being so generous, I'd love the chance to win these pencils. Thanks again as always Harry ☺
Great review Harry, I'm totally impressed with how good the pigments looked with water added, a nice colour selection for a 24 set too, All the best my friend.
Exciting review! I love colored pencils and watercolors. I haven't tried to do much with watercolor pencils. This review makes me want to try them! I hope I win them, because if I don't I'll have to buy a set to try and explain to my husband why I needed more color pencils!
Thank you for the review! I do not know Albrecht Dürer pencils and they look like luxury pencils to me, and I believe would be a dream to colour with these
Hi ! Thank you so much for this review. This is my first time visiting your channel, it definitely won't be my last, very informative, wonderful. These Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils look like a lot of Fun to use ! I used to draw all the time (graphite) it was a part of me from birth. When my father died I was a young adult, I lost my desire to draw. Then my mother and brother passed away, and so did my passion to draw and create. Many many years have gone by now, and finally the urge, desire and passion is returning !!! It truly is an AMAZING feeling !!! I'm so glad it has returned. I thought I had lost it forever. So now I Must Create. So I would like to get into and learn colored pencil and watercolor pencil and combine the two mediums. Thank you so much. Best Wishes to you ~
I have been using watercolor pencils (a lower- quality brand) with a brush as an underpainting for Polychromos. I would love to try Albrecht Durers to better compliment the Polychromos. Thank you for the helpful review!
Hi Harry, now that I've fixed my RU-vid email I'm able to do a lot more now and I just watched the your video on the wordless pencils. So thank you for all the reviews you do for all of us I know it takes a lot of time and effort.
BStasiya thank you so much for your kind words and I am very glad that you found my channel eventually. I very much look forward to seeing loads more comments from you in other videos. Thank you so much
I personally use either a round brass M&R hand held sharpener or the Derwent Superpoint Hand Crank, if you follow the link you can see the ones I mean bit.ly/2oHtmrh I hope this has helped
Hi Harry, what happened to showing this pencil on black paper? I have found you showing how the pencils (regular or watercolor) look on black paper surprisingly very important and helpful to me. I think this is unique to your channel and hope you will continue to include it in future reviews. Any chance you can add it back into this review? Thanks and keep up the good work :)
Hi Dawn, your wish is my command. I have included an image of the pencil in its dry form on black paper on my written review bit.ly/2tsIg6Z. The only reason I didn't include it on the video was because I don't have black watercolor paper and I didn't want to activate the pigment and have that horrible effect you can sometimes get when using watercolor on non watercolor paper, were the paper can start lifting and falling apart. However, you are the first person to let me know that this is a valuable part of my reviews and so because of this, I have this second purchased Black Watercolor paper from online and will be including this in my videos going forward for all water soluble pencils. Thank you so much for your feedback Dawn I really appreciate it and I promise, once I get the watercolor paper, it will feature in every video. Also, as a last minute thing, I have been able to provide a giveaway of a set of 12 Faber Castell Albrecht Durer. You don't have to do anything as to enter the competition all you have to do is comment on this video and be a subscriber. The details are in the description box below. Thank you so much Dawn.
Hi Harry-Dear sir, please do not purchase special paper as I did mean dry on regular black paper. I too am disabled with my back and was trying to get around purchasing too many things. I am a video person and obviously did not look at your printed review-sorry. Thanks for the link and I checked it out. I do have 3 more questions for you, if you could find the time to answer them, I would appreciate it very much. My thoughts were, maybe to purchase the watercolor versions of the higher end pencils first, and save for the regular versions of the pencils to purchase later. That way I could use the watercolor pencils for both dry and wet media. It seems that the watercolor pencils (from Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer & Caran d'ache Supracolor II's specifically) are very vibrant on black paper-a lot more vibrant than their dry pencil versions- (1)Do you find this to be true? Since you physically have both tests and can look at them with the same lighting - could you please tell me - of the two brands I mentioned- (2)which one, in your opinion- is the most vibrant on the black paper? I would also like your opinion on my thoughts of using the watercolor pencils as a kind of 2-for-1 use, until I could purchase the regular versions- (3)would this work out well? -why or why not. Sorry for the book, but I wanted to be as clear as possible, as to what I was thinking about. Maybe others are curious about this too. Thanks for your response and in advance for your response for this. Keep up the good work. I always say, any day that I am vertical is a good day! 😎
Hi Dawn. Do you have an email address that I could sen you my reply to. Rather than telling you my opinion on the question you asked, I have used the same colours with Faber Castells Albrecht Durer, Polychromos and Caran d'Aches Supracolor Soft all in dray format, side by side on Black paper. You will be able to see for yourself which looks best on black paper. I have also helped with the other part of the question as well. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
Thanks for a great review--very helpful. I've been looking at these to replace my Derwent watercolor pencils which I don't really like since I can't get them to dissolve in water very well.
Thanks for the great review, Harry. I love that watercolor pencils are portable without worrying about pans to dry or tubes and palettes. I can even just color the image and put the water to it later. Be well.
Thank you so much I really appreciate you stopping by and commenting. actually in leaving a comment you have automatically entered yourself into a giveaway. a last minute thing I have added a brand new 12 set of these awesome pencils as a giveaway, a collaboration between COLORED PENCIL Magazine and The Art Gear Guide. Anxiety Art Adventures wow that is an awesome birthday gift you got, you are going to love them, they are really special. Oh and Happy belated Birthday
I have never seen these pencils, I have the polychromos but these, never saw them, usually I try to see/find all of the pencils but it seems I miss these ones
I am dying to get my hands on those pencils. I heard that they are the only ones that really truly dissolve every particle into watercolor. would love to win them. thanks Karen Hasenpflug
Good information! Thanks for explaining about the light fastness and how to tell the quality of the pencils, as well as the showing the different methods for using watercolor pencils. I've tried some lower grade watercolor pencils before, although I was just experimenting and learning by doing. This video was very helpful! I received the ultramarine with my July issue of CPM. I tested it as I was watching your video. I'm definitely adding these pencils to my wish list!
I love drawing and painting and been wanting to try watercolour but have been unsure what to get. Would be fantastic to win this! Would be a great transition medium before maybe spending money on actually watercolour paints or pencils to see if I would like it or not!
A great informative review - thank you! I do own a small set of watercolor pencils (not Faber Castell) and I have often been frustrated by the lines of my drawing still showing even after activating with lots of water. I just assumed that was the price you pay for using watercolor pencils! WOW am I happy to see that is not the case. I will start saving my pennies now to upgrade to better quality pencils (and/or cross my fingers to win a set). Thank you!
Thanks for this review! I had just recently received the free pencil in the print copy of Colored Pencil magazine- and was really impressed with how well it activated. I have only worked with Inktense before and have not pursued any watercolor pencils just due to being spoiled by inktenses vivid colors, but the Faber Castell was such a great surprise! The color was so intense just like you showed in your video, would love to try the 12 set out! Great review, will keep visiting for new ones, too!
I've very definitely got my eye on these pencils. I think if and when I do get some watercolour pencils to try it will be this brand because I love my Polychromos pencils so much. The only liquid pencils I have at the moment are Inktense, which I am starting to really like and get the hang of. But as I came from a watercolour painting background, I really will have to try watercolour pencils at some point. I love your fancy new swoosh with music that came in a couple of times as you changed scene. Very snazzy!
I've just started using watercolor pencils - and picked Albrecht Durer. I ordered from open stock because of the project I was working on - didn't need all of them. But, I have sets on my wish list. Really enjoy your reviews.
I bough a couple open stock to try them, I snapped a little bit of the lead off and put them on my watercolour palette, wet them a little so they stick to it and works like a watercolor pan just fine unfortunately I can't seem to find _any_ Faber castell product open stock anymore here in Mexico... so sad
I have been wanting a set of watercolor pencils for some time now and have had my eye on these. I have the Polychromos colored pencils and I just love them. Faber Castell is great quality. I appreciate your review of the pencils, very thoroughly done. I would love to be entered in the giveaway. Thank you for the chance!
As I suspected before I got a look at the lightfast chart. And thanks so much for posting it... The red spectrum has only Light Cadmium Red with three stars. All the rest are two stars or one star. Well, Sanguine is three stars :) Anyway, also, none of the madders or violet range are three stars. So... what are you going to do? I learned the hard way about fugitive colors. Long years ago a friend of mine hung a watercolor in her health food store , near some fluorescent lights. After a couple of months or so I took the painting down. The violets were gray, all traces of violet gone. Perhaps a slightly extreme example but the lightfast conversation needs to be ongoing. Not much has been done to fix the violet colors, and the reds aren't any better either. It's been decades. Why can't the manufacturers come up with synthetic pigments that can hold up better? It's been over thirty years since I had the problem with my watercolor fading issue. I know some progress has been made. At least now Faber Castell includes this lightfast chart. And I'm sure that overall the colors can withstand light better than in decades past...
Thanks for the review and the chance to win! I had not considered that being water based I could blend and create many more colours than I could with traditional coloured pencils, but of course you can, duh. I have some beautiful Polychromos, it would be great to add some Albrecht Durers to my ARTsenal !
