In this video I take a look at the new Faber-Castell Pitt Matte pencils. These pencils are designed specifically to reduce the light reflection normally associated with graphite drawings. Today I will test these qualities and do a couple small drawing. You can pick these pencils up in open stock and in sets at: wetpaintart.com

Hey Thanks Mark. The deep blacks I the 12B and 14B are really deep and 85% non reflective in my tests. It’s pretty cool to be able to get that degree of depth and blackness in a pencil. Normally I’d go to charcoal for that kind of black. Hope you are going great my friend. Good to hear from you!!!

Those seem like nice pencils. I like Faber-Castell. I have some gel sticks and watercolor pencils made by that company. Also, Wet Paint is a good store to order from, even if the customer does not live in Minnesota.

Hello Marty, your review comes at just the right time. I am about to get some new pencils and I'd say these pencils are definitely a great addition to the Faber Castell line. A pencil drawing without graphite sheen looks much better in my opinion.; love your tree trunk! I could see a whole range of tree trunk drawings side by side! Viele Grüße aus Düsseldorf! Danke für den Hinweis, mein Freund. Ja, ich denke, Sie würden diese sehr genießen. Sie sind so einfach zu bedienen und gehen so glatt nach unten, mit sehr wenig Reflektivität. Sie sind leicht zu schärfen und halten einen guten Punkt, obwohl der weichere Bereich wirklich sehr weich ist. Wetter sie in Minnesota ist wunderschön diese Woche Anja. Sie würden den Gesang der Vögel und den Sonnenschein genießen. Es wird bald ins alte Düsseldorf kommen, hoffe ich.

Thanks for the video, Marty! I just picked up the Mars Lumograph Black set. I need to get these to compare them. I enjoy creating with pencil but I can't stand the shine when I'm trying to go darker or the mess, at least this solves one of those problems. Lol.

Hi Pete - If you do pick these, maybe just the higher/softer range and see what you think. I will use these a lot.

The best, deepest black ever - Derwents "Onyx" pencils. Really great at a consistent, deep, solid black. Won't use any other now for my deep shadows and blackest areas.

I was just in Wet Paint this week! I got a tube of the Schminke 2022 random grey. It's gorgeous!! Also finally picked up one of the new Hahnemuhle sketchbooks and I'm excited to try it out! These pencils look really lovely, might have to check them out as well. Thanks for the video!!

Thank you for this. They look beautiful I just received the Mars Lumograph Black pencils that are made with a mixture of carbon and graphite for matte results. They are also supposed to be quite strong when sharpening. I haven't had much of a chance to use them. They come in HB, 2B, 4B, 6B and 8B. Have you tried them? If you have, are they similar. I wonder how the 12B and 14B would compare. In just test swatching, they are nicer than the 9000 Faber-Castell series in that there is practically no shine at all, except in the 2B because of the higher amount of graphite. Do you find that with these the softer pencils have the least amount of shine too? Sorry for all the questions. This was a very timely review and I appreciate it a lot. Thanks> :)

Hi Sheila - Thanks for the notes. Yes I have tried the MARS Lumograph and even reviewed them on my channel here a while back. Yes I love them, but these seem even better, well at least in the softer range. I also use the 9000 series, but do get a noticeable shine from them when I've used them. I do find much less shine with these matte pencils than a standard pencil and this helps me a lot because I don't need to go with charcoal, which can be a big miss depending on the piece. @@owingsart Thank you. I will search for your review of them. I did like the idea behind the Lumograph pencils because like you, while I love the idea of the matte charcoal look, the mess is definitely a challenge. This seems to be a little bit of the 'best of both worlds'. I will go see what you have to say about them. Maybe later on you can compare them with these, when you had the chance to do more with them. That would be interesting. I am trying to be on a 'less buy' year and sometimes it is a struggle. LOL. THANK YOU so much for your thoughts. :) (PS - Since you have both sets, how do you compare the 12B and 14B of the Faber Castells with the darkest (I think 8B) Lumographs? Is there much difference? Are the Faber Castells much darker, as the numbers would suggest? (Although I realize it is kind of like apples and oranges.) Thoughts on that would be appreciated. Thank you. :) )
